About Harden's Guide

Similar to the Michelin Guide and New York's Zagat Survey, The Harden's Guide was established by restaurant lovers and brothers, Richard and Peter Harden in 1991, and Peter Harden still runs the business today.

The Harden's Guide provides ratings and reviews based on the results of a reader survey.

At one point the reviews were also based on the personal visits of brothers and founders Richard and Peter Harden.

The survey on which the guide is based is also used to produce The Sunday Times Food List, an annual publication featuring the top 100 restaurants in the UK.

Debut Single from Captain Crash & The Magic Hats

Local band, Captain Crash & The Magic Hats features two long-term Milford on Sea village residents, and they are just about to launch their first radio friendly single entitled 'Anywhere'. The release date will be in March 2024.

Once released, the single will be available on all major music platforms such as Spotify, Apple iTunes, Amazon Music and other music sources.

The song was initially recorded with band member Arthur Rathbone Pullen, who is also owner, music producer and studio engineer at Sizzle Studios in Bournemouth, and then later remixed and remastered at HP Studios in Ringwood.

Captain Crash & The Magic Hats were born after a 2012 jam session with local musician Pauly Gordelier.

Their two demo albums blend bluesy rock with 60s/70s influences, adding psychedelic flair and ethereal melodies. Imagine The Smiths jamming with Lou Reed or Pink Floyd with Radiohead whispering in their ear.

Their music carries an ecological message, but it's the raw passion and storytelling that truly resonates. This is music for the soul, straight up and authentic.

Darrell 'Crash' Kennedy is the band's singer/songwriter & rhythm guitarist. He is based in Milford on Sea, and has lived here for most of his adult life.

Darrell 'Crash' explains:

The song Anywhere depicts a protagonist searching for connection and meaning in a vast and possibly lonely universe. They feel insignificant, unsure of their place, and yearn for answers or companionship.

Despite facing silence and doubt, they are determined to keep searching, "traveling at the speed of sound" to reach "out there."

The song leaves the outcome open, but emphasizes the journey itself, questioning our own place in the universe and the possibility of finding connection.

Captain Crash & The Magic Hats Band Members:

Darrell 'Crash' Kennedy: Guitars and vocals
Greg Pepper: Drums and vocals
Pauly Gordelier: Bass and guitars
Arthur Rathbone Pullen: Synth

In early 2023, Captain Crash & The Magic Hats had a hit Number 1 on the ReverbNation UK rock charts.

Since forming in 2012 the band have creatively been writing their own songs, with the songs being expressions of both life experiences and imagination of the writers.

To watch and listen to video of 'Everyone (Remix)' and other tracks on Reverb Nation, please click here - and 'Hung Up' please click here.

Darrell & Greg are also members of The Strange Blues Band.

This  four-piece popular rock band features two guys from Milford on Sea, Darrell on vocals & guitars and Greg on vocals & drums.

The band can be seen at venues in the local region and in Milford on Sea village. They also appeared at the Milford on Sea Music Festival 2023, where their covers of classic rock songs and anthems got the large crowd on their feet singing and dancing!

Along with the classic rock, they often throw in to their performances some well-known blues, rock n roll, 60/70s pop and Americana.

Captain Crash and The Magic Hats Bio from ReverbNation

The band have built up a portfolio of original songs, and have completed two albums, the latest being Traffic Jam.

The first album, Caramelised Biscuit is an indie/alternative mixing jangly guitar with ethereal mellotron. The songs carry ecological and sometimes social messages.

There is no particular dress code and they may play live as a duo or with friends, Paul (bass) and Arthur (keys). The bands aim is to produce music that is both listenable and meaningful without spoiling the party.

About Verveine Fishmarket Restaurant

Verveine was opened in February 2010 by renowned chef/patron David Wykes. This exceptional fish restaurant offers high quality and relaxed dining in a cordial atmosphere, whilst serving imaginative, unusual and exciting modern dishes.

Dining at Verveine is quite simply, 'A dining experience'.

They take a slightly different approach to dining out, rather than selecting dishes they ask: How many courses would you like? - Is there anything you don't fancy eating? - and Do you have any allergies?

From there, they create a meal to include a mixture of Verveine favourites alongside new and seasonally inspired creations with the very best ingredients.

They offer great value 2 or 3 course lunches, a 6 course tasting lunch, through to exceptional evening tasting menus with 4, 6 or 8 courses. Gift vouchers are also available all year round.

On selected dates throughout the year, they also run The Supper Club, which consists of One Communal Table with an enticingly priced 4 course menu. This is a great way to meet people and enjoy a fun evening with delicious food!
Chef/Patron David learnt his trade through working in world renowned restaurants in France and England.
For several years, Verveine have held a Five Star Exceptional Food Rating in the renowned Harden's Guide, and is placed in the Harden's Top 100 Restaurants in the UK.

Disappointment for Objectors to Manor Road Development

As published last week, the New Forest District Council Planning Meeting to assess and vote on the Manor Road development of 170 houses took place at NFDC offices in Lyndhurst on Wednesday 14th February 2024.

Over 200 Milford on Sea residents, the Milford Residents for Sustainable Development (MRSD), and Milford on Sea Parish Councillors, appeared in force at the council’s headquarters. A farcical situation soon arose in the meeting chamber, as it was too small to accommodate everybody. After a heated debate with the council, the outcome was that fire and safety regulations meant that some of the attendees had to move to another room to watch proceedings.

Manor Road Meeting - September 2023
Prior to the NFDC Planning Meeting, over 900 Milford on Sea residents had registered objections online, and around 300 people had attended a Public Meeting in the village in September 2023.

At the recent meeting, points were made that residents are supportive of appropriate and sensible development, and they want to see affordable housing for residents and school places for their children.

However, the Milford on Sea Parish Council and MRSD recognised the concerns as to the impact of this large housing estate on the very fabric of Milford on Sea.

The main objections were that the site density is too intense, highways not being able to cope, infrastructure not fit for such a huge influx of people, and the risk to local services, such as the doctors surgery, being overwhelmed.

Ultimately, the objectors were to be disappointed when the planning was approved by the NFDC Planning Committee who voted in favour of the proposal 6 votes to 4.

The Milford Residents for Sustainable Development are not planning to give up their fight and are now considering their next steps.

A spokesperson for Milford Residents for Sustainable Development has provided this summary of the NFDC Planning Meeting:

The meeting start was delayed due to sheer numbers which were unable to be accommodated in the meeting chamber.

After a lively debate with passions flaring the only option was for some residents to watch proceedings from another room. Sue Whitlock appealed to our residents to move and very sadly a number of residents had to watch the meeting proceedings from a separate room. This set the tone for a very heated debate.

Impassioned objections were presented by Cllr Alvin Reid (Milford Ward councillor), Sue Fraser (Milford Residents for Sustainable Development) and Parish Cllr Sue Whitlock (chair of Milford Parish council planning committee). Each of these speeches were followed by enthusiastic applause and cheering.

These objections covered areas such as environment, density of development, legality of proposal and preserving the uniqueness of Milford on Sea. Sue Fraser and Anne Cullen provided closing speeches imploring the planning committee to listen to the weight of public opinion and reject this proposal.

Following a lengthy and passionate debate lead by Cllr David Hawkins (Milford Ward councillor), the planning proposal was voted 6 to 4 in favour to proceed.

The feeling in the room was that both fear of going to appeal and a lack of housing in the new forest area weighted the debate in favour of approving.

This is a sad day for democracy in that the planning committee clearly did not listen to the weight of public opinion, nor did they acknowledge the points raised within the meeting.

Milford Residents for Sustainable Development want to thank the residents of Milford who have supported us during this campaign though attending the public meeting, emails of support, providing assistance and expertise and turning up in the rain for the planning meeting. Milford is such a unique and special place and to see the weight of reaction and feeling is truly inspirational.

So what is next? The process will now focus on full planning details including style of housing and identification and agreement of building requirements. Lets hope the developer does consult with the village but we will continue to work closely with the Parish Council and our local councillors to ensure we can provide the best of the worst outcome.

Thank you Milford, you are wonderful. Onwards and upwards.
