Royal Ballet Company Dancer to visit Silver Swans

Stephanie Constantine-Smith, a local ballet teacher who has been running the 'Silver Swans with Stephanie' Dance Classes in Milford on Sea since 2019, is delighted to let people know that she has been lucky enough to arrange a visit from a Royal Ballet Company member, Tara Brigitte Bhavnani.

Tara is coming down from London in November to take a ballet workshop in All Saints Church Hall, Milford on Sea. (& one in St Thomas’s Church Hall, Lymington.)

These workshops are specifically for the older learners who attend Stephanie's Silver Swans.

This is likely to be the first time that Royal Ballet Company member has ever visited Milford on Sea to take a class, so everyone that goes will be extremely lucky to see a master of their art at work.

------------------------
About Silver Swans with Stephanie

Silver Swans are gentle ballet classes that have been specifically designed for the over-55s, but any adult is welcome to join, whatever their age.

The classes are an initiative developed by the Royal Academy of Dance so that older learners can take part in a ballet class, which will also help improve mobility, posture, co-ordination and energy levels.

Stephanie Constantine-Smith started her Milford on Sea classes in 2019, and even managed to keep the classes going throughout lockdown via Zoom.

Research shows that 75% of the factors affecting quality of life and longevity are related to lifestyle, while only 25% are hereditary. This means that there’s no excuse for not getting more active whatever your age. And dance in particular, can play a vital role in ensuring a longer and better quality of life.

Research also often puts dance ahead of other physical activities in the variety of health benefits that it brings. Ballet and dance are also very social activities and Silver Swans classes can be great places to meet new people with a passion and joy for life.

Silver Swans meet in All Saints Church Hall, Milford on Sea on:
  • Thursdays 10.45 to 11.45am. Term time only.
  • Mondays 12noon to 1pm. Term time only.
Angela Rippon is the Ambassador for Silver Swans, and she demonstrated how older people can still dance and be flexible in Strictly Come Dancing 2023.

To find out more about The Silver Swans at the Royal Academy of Dance, please click here.

Please contact Stephanie if you are interested in joining the village classes. New members are always welcome.

Silver Swans with Stephanie

Stephanie also has Silver Swans classes in Lymington, Christchurch and Sopley. As well as a Pilates class in Hordle.

Help as a Milford on Sea Volunteer Driver or Coordinator

Milford on Sea Volunteer Drivers provide a door-to-door car service for local residents to medical appointments including hospitals, surgeries and dentists.

People who use the service are likely to be adults who cannot use other forms of transport. This might be due to impaired mobility, frailty or disability. It may also be because there is simply no other form of transport available at the right time.

The MVD rely on a dedicated team of drivers, and coordinators who arrange the journeys. This is a worthwhile and rewarding opportunity to volunteer in your community.

Can you offer a few hours a week? The Milford on Sea Volunteer Drivers are looking for both friendly, empathetic drivers and coordinators who want to make a real difference in their community.

The MVD have a duty of care to those people who use the service, therefore there is a formal application process.

All of the volunteers need to show empathy and sensitivity and understand that the information that they handle is confidential.

Drivers must hold a valid driving licence and be fit and well. Your car must have comprehensive insurance, a current MOT where appropriate, and be suitable for carrying passengers. You need to be confident in using email. Mileage expenses are paid for all journeys.

Coordinators need to be confident in speaking to people on the telephone and using a computer. Training will be given in using the MVD booking system.

How to apply

1. Complete a registration form. This can be done online on the website www.milfordonseacharitabletrust.com or printed off and returned.
- or a paper copy can be provided, please contact:

2. Two referees are requested who are not family members.

3. A DBS check is required to be undertaken for all prospective drivers.

4. Once all the checks have been completed, prospective drivers take the Hampshire County Council Driver Assessment. This is paid for by the MVD (Milford on Sea Volunteer Drivers).

All applications gratefully received!

Meet Milford on Sea Charitable Trust

Milford on Sea is renowned for people volunteering and helping others, but did you know that we have a village charity whose purpose is to run or support a number of village charities and community groups?

The
Milford on Sea
Charitable Trust currently organise or support the following village organisations:

-------------------------------
Milford Volunteer Drivers (MVD)

Originally founded as Milford Community Care Group in 1982 by two ladies from All Saints’ church. They had recognised a need for reliable transport for villagers to medical appointments. During this time, the group was driving 40 people a week to medical appointments.

In 2022 the group was renamed to Milford Volunteer Drivers (MVD).

Today the service is run by the Milford on Sea Charitable Trust, and the Milford Volunteer Drivers provide a valuable door-to-door car service for local residents, transporting anyone in the village who may struggle to get to a medical appointment. Supporting some of the most vulnerable people in our community is a very rewarding and valuable role.

Volunteer Drivers and Coordinators are always welcomed. Supporting some of the most vulnerable people in our community is a very rewarding and valuable role.

About the Milford on Sea Charitable Trust

The Milford on Sea Charitable Trust (MoSCT) was founded in January 2017 to serve as an umbrella charity for voluntary community organisations in Milford on Sea, Keyhaven and Everton.

They provides a bank account, insurance, DBS checks for volunteers, and general advice to various Milford on Sea voluntary organisations.

The members of the charity belong to the Milford on Sea Community Panel, a networking group of individuals who represent a range of local voluntary organisations. The aim is twofold:
  • To support existing groups
  • To support new projects which benefit people living in the parish of Milford on Sea.
Any Milford on Sea voluntary organisation whose members think they could benefit from coming under the umbrella can join the Community Panel. Existing members, and any new members of the Panel are eligible to be members of the charity, which is administered by its  Trustees. The panel meetings are the main forum for monitoring existing projects, and discussing new projects and ideas, and how they might be introduced and managed.

The Charity is registered with the Charity Commission and also registered for Gift Aid. When an individual makes a donation, they can make it directly to the group or project they wish to support, or can donate to the charity itself. Any general funds which are donated will be allocated to new or existing projects.

They are constantly looking for ideas for new projects to come forward from the Community, which would, in turn, attract more donations.

In 2023, the Milford on Sea Charitable Trust's board of trustees consisted of: Jenny Whitley, John Whitley, Margaret Clarke, Tony Harrison, Peter Stockwell and Jacqueline Peacock.
