Milford Cards & Gifts to Judge Awards

Kayleigh & Sinan Hisim at Milford Cards & Gifts had some exiting news recently, as Kayleigh has been asked to be on the judging panel for The Henries Awards. She will be helping to choose the Best Greeting Cards of the Year.

The Henries Awards are named after Sir Henry Cole (who introduced the first commercially produced Christmas card in 1843), and are the ultimate accolades in greeting card publishing.

Their delightful shop has also featured in a recent article on the PG Buzz website. Please click here to read.

Added to this, they having been announced as a Finalist in the RETAS Greeting Card Retail Awards, and they will find out how they have done at the RETAS Awards Night in the Grosvenor House Hotel, Park Lane, London in July.

Kayleigh & Sinan became finalists in recognition of their excellent response to the appeal for donations for the Earthquake Disaster in Turkey earlier this year.

We hope that they come back clutching a winners award.

Mark at The Village News also collected cash donations for the Turkey and Syria Earthquake appeal,
which went directly to the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) through his Payzone system.

It was heart-warming to see how these village retailers did all they could to help a devastated community in desperate need.

Both shops now have an excellent selection of Fathers Day Cards as well as lots of other greeting cards, gifts and goodies!

Successful first Junior Rackethon at Tennis Club

Milford Tennis & Squash Club hosted their first Junior Rackethon for members & non-members on Sunday 11th June 2023.

The Junior Rackethon was a fun team competition that allows older juniors to enjoy an afternoon at the club trying new sports.

Team ‘Table and Chairs’ came out on top at the end with a grand total of 394 points!

Milford Tennis & Squash Club Coach, Caitlin organised the day and also had a special prize for the ‘Player of the tournament’. This went to Aurelia who very much deserved the prize due to her sportsmanship in every single match that she played.

Clean Sweep for Milford Girl Cricketers

With the strength of their Girls’ Cricket Club growing, Milford on Sea Primary School was able to enter three teams into this year’s New Forest School Sports Partnership Girls Dynamo Cricket Tournament, held at Calmore Cricket Club, on Thursday 25th May.

The three Milford teams were named after Rachel Heyhoe Flint, the inspirational England cricketer who did so much for the women’s game and each of the Heys, the Hoes and the Flints were drawn in three different pools of three for the first part of the Tournament.

The Heys, The Hoes and The Flints

The Heys dominated their pool with convincing victories over Marchwood B and Abbotswood B, while the Hoes, up against Marchwood A and Calmore, lost both of their matches despite some super play. The Flints went up against Abbotswood A and Orchard and ended the morning with one victory and one loss.

These results meant that the teams were once again split into three different Tiers for the finals, allowing each to aim for their own ‘Top Spot’. The Heys were drawn against Abbotswood and Marchwood A teams in Tier 1; the Flints took on Abbotswood B and Calmore in Tier 2 and the Hoes played against Marchwood B and Orchard in the 3rd Tier.

After their nervous start to the tournament, the Hoes and the Flints grew in confidence with each game played and all three teams shone during the afternoon, playing some amazing cricket and showing fantastic teamwork.

They each won all of their final matches, securing a clean sweep of 1st places and Gold Medals for Milford on Sea – a truly amazing result! For the second year in a row, The Heys brought back the NFSSP trophy and have qualified for the Hampshire County Finals to be played on 20th June at the Ageas Bowl.

About Milford Girls Cricket

The Milford Girls Cricket teams started when Carolyn Brown and some other local coaches made a number of homemade cricket videos during the first Covid Lockdown in March 2020, and then invited Milford on Sea Primary School to form some girls cricket teams. Since then, the teams have grown from strength to strength.

The teams play at Barnes Lane Recreation Ground and train weekly during the season to play in three teams; The Heys, The Hoes and The Flints (named after Rachael Heyhoe Flint, the former English Women’s Captain).

In the first two seasons, from complete novices, nine girls played District Cricket, with two featuring in the U11 Hampshire Girls squad. Five Y4 Milford schoolgirls were crowned Hampshire U9 Champions, and eight of the U11s became Hampshire Champions or Runners-up in both softball and hardball.

Milford on Sea Primary School also won the Girls Dynamos Cricket Hampshire County Final after taking a staggering 10 wickets at the Ageas Bowl on Tuesday 28th June 2022.

In 2023, the three Milford on Sea Primary School teams entered the New Forest School Sports Partnership Girls Dynamo Cricket Tournament held at Calmore Cricket Club on Thursday 25th May. They each won all of their final matches, securing a clean sweep of 1st places and Gold Medals for Milford on Sea.

At the same tournament, and for the second year in a row, The Heys brought back the NFSSP trophy and qualified for the Hampshire County Finals to be played on 20th June 2023 at the Ageas Bowl.

New players are always welcome, to find out more, please contact Carolyn Brown at capat40@hotmail.com.

About The Beach House

The Grade II listed Westover Hall was built in 1897 for Alexander Siemens (who created the world’s first public electricity supply) as a summer house for his family.

Built in the Arts and Crafts style by architect Arnold Mitchell, it was once judged the most luxurious residence on England’s south coast.

Siemens had married Louisa Dodwell in 1881 and she didn’t like the Victorian style of décor which resulted in the wonderful stained glass windows instead of heavy drapes.

A number of the imposing stained glass windows, which can still be seen when visiting today, portray Pre-Raphaelite scenes from the “The Enchanted Wood”.  The windows were designed by Oscar Patterson who was renowned for his work in the Glasgow style.

Following his death in 1928 Westover Hall was bought in 1930 by William Morris, later Lord Nuffield, who was the founder of the Morris Motor Co.

During World War Two, Westover Hall was requisitioned by the war office and used as officers’ quarters for the whole of WWII.

After a number of other owners, it became a hotel in 1977.

Hall & Woodhouse bought Westover Hall in 2012 and renamed it to; ‘The Beach House’, to reflect how the Siemens family had always used it.

The Beach House pub restaurant & hotel has impressive raised patio areas and extensive gardens with great views across to The Needles and the Isle of Wight. There are also 14 charming hotel rooms, each one unique and boutique styled. The pub is also dog friendly, and if you want a bowl of water or even a little treat for man’s best friend, please just ask.

Adrian Blake Remembered

It is with great sadness that we have heard of the passing of Adrian Blake, locally known as Adie.

Adrian with Mark in happy times

Adrian was a friendly and popular face in Milford on Sea, where until recently he had been the village fishmonger.

At just 56 years of age, Adrian passed away on Wednesday 31st May after an extremely short battle with cancer.

Having lost his job in the village last year, Adrian had moved to become a fishmonger in Southampton, and to live with his brother on a farm nearby to his new work.

Adrian had a daughter, Chloe, and he was so very proud of her. She is a ballroom dancer living in Rome, and at only 26, it is far too young for her to lose her loving father.

He was also very good friends with Mark Cummings, owner of The Village News, and he would often be seen in Mark’s shop, chatting to him and the locals that came in.

Adrian was a well-known and very much liked, part of the Milford on Sea community, and he had lots of friends and former customers in the village. He will be sorely missed by many.

The funeral will take place on the 16th June at 9.30am at New Forest Crematorium and Memorial Gardens, Stem Lane, New Milton BH25 5FH. The family will then have a wake to celebrate Adrian's life at Pennington Social Club at 11.30am.

Saltwater Café back very soon

The very popular, Saltwater Café, Bar & Restaurant will be back in the village for everyone to enjoy very soon.

Having been based at 106 High Street, Milford on Sea, until Sunday 23rd April this year, Tony & Becca have be refurbishing and redesigning 60 High Street, in the building previously occupied by the La Perle restaurant at the foot of the village green.

Their many happy customers won't have too much longer to wait until they can enjoy their delicious menu once again, and the pictures below give a taste of what to expect. It looks like the stylish design will be something to enjoy and worth waiting for!

SLAM: Manor Road Development Update

SLAM (School Lane and Manor Road), a group of local residents who want to preserve Milford on Sea for current and future generations, have sent us the notes from a recent meeting relating to an outline planning application submitted by local builder, Pennyfarthing Homes.

The planning application is for up to 190 new homes on 'Swallowfield Park', on land north of Manor Road, Milford on Sea, opposite Milford on Sea Primary School.

Good evening all,

Firstly thanks so much for all the feedback we have received today from members who went to the Parish Council planning meeting last night. We really appreciate you reporting back with your feedback from the meeting. Here is a couple of the reports we had back with some interesting points:

Manor Road Development Site
A few of us went to the Parish Council meeting last night chaired by Sue Whitlock. Sue outlined the Parish’s position which is very much against the proposal. She was well prepared, had read all the objections submitted and said the Parish would submit their revised response by June 9th.

Basically the key points are the same: density, infrastructure, access, traffic, etc. Collectively it was agreed the submission by Penny Farthing was arrogant and cynical and way above the village's needs and requirements.

One interesting point was that Sue stated the village needed 54 affordable homes to meet current demand. Affordable being either rent, shared ownership or low cost purchase, thus adding to the point that the proposal was simply outrageous.

There were a number of suggestions from the audience including exploring a covenant to ensure only homes are sold as primary homes, to explore the designation of green belt now that Michael Gove has changed legislation. There were residents from Manor Road, Barnes Lane and Newlands Manor present.

Sue confirmed there would be a full public meeting at a future date chaired by the Parish Council.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>

I do wonder if the Parish Council deliberately made details of the meeting quite difficult to find as all of the public attendees were there for the Pennyfarthing development and if it were more apparent on their website I believe they would have been inundated.

The Chairperson pre-empted the comments and in some detail talked about the infrastructure issues, mainly drainage. Schools at capacity were mentioned and the traffic impact on Manor Road. She then asked that these issues were not repeated by members of the public. One member of the public pointed out that the traffic surveys were carried out in 2020 being the height of the Covid restrictions meaning that the results were not a true picture.

Also discussed was the Government’s proposed change of policy with regard to the development of Greenbelt land. The Greenbelt status has been removed from this land and David asked whether it could be restored. David is to speak to the Council Clerk with the view of establishing whether this could be achieved. It was also proposed that, if possible a covenant could be implemented whereby the houses could only ever be owner occupied as a main residence. There was an overall consensus that Pennyfarthing had not publicised their plans as much as they should have. The criteria for the households who received a letter does not seem to have been met. We should individually have received letters. Personally I think Covid was a golden opportunity for Pennyfarthing. An online presentation and as far as I’m aware the only other detailed information was pinned to the fence at the entrance to the public footpath on Manor Road. It is no wonder that many local residents are blissfully unaware.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>

We have also had other emails from people asking to join SLAM and how they can help out. With Pennyfarthing looking to move forward with more detailed plans once they have had feedback on the outlined planning we feel now is a good time to ask for more help. Over the next few months, and probably years, we are going to need some more people to help out with the running of SLAM and bring some new ideas to the table. With this in mind would you like to be one of those to get involved?

SLAM has slimmed down somewhat since the last time we met over MOS1 (The Swifts Estate) so going forward it would be great for others to take a greater role on how it is run and possibly more regular meetings. If you feel like you can and would like to help then please do email us and we can set up a meeting for those who would like to and take things from there.

There have also been a few calls for a village meeting to discuss the proposed new estate. At this point we feel that as the planning application is just an outlined one then once we know more, fuller details about their plans, and with the current deadline of the 9th June for comments (objections) then it would be too soon to organise but its certainly something we can do in the near future.

Please do share this email with friends and family and remind them of the deadline coming up and also if they want to receive these updates too then we ask they send us a quick email to ask to be put on the list.

We look forward to hearing from you if you would like to get involved.
