Kids Discovering Wildlife with 'Wings'

Keith Metcalf has set up a new group called ‘Wings’ to encourage youngsters to take an active interest in the natural world.

Last week Wings (Keith Metcalf’s new wildlife group) staged their debut performances at the Community Centre and on Milford village green by participating in the Greener on the Green – Milford Festival with five young ladies reading nature stories to children throughout the week. At the same time as the story-tellers were reading, pictures from the books were projected onto a large screen so that the younger children could follow the stories in pictures.

Keith told the A&T “We have been developing the nature story-telling project for nursery and pre-school children since June 2019, but having lost nearly two-years we are only now getting things up and running. In the meantime we have been working in partnership with Hampshire Wildlife Trust’s Wilder scheme and with Milford Conservation Volunteers (MCV) who has partly funded some of the initial set-up costs’. Keith said; ‘We thought that ‘Wings’ seemed an appropriate name for children as our stories mostly relate to British wildlife including birds, butterflies and things with wings. We also wish to reach out to other members of the community so another strand to the group will be for those still ‘Young at Heart’ with an interest in wildlife”.

The group currently has a team of five local girls, collectively known as ‘Girls with Wings’ who are keen to share their nature story-telling skills with youngsters and to help children become young wildlife champions of the future.

Keith said; “With so much talk about climate change, sea-level rise and carbon sequestration, it has not been hard to be drawn into the various conservation, environment and biodiversity issues that surround us, but to lighten the load a little for our youngsters, we wish to make sure that in future they have knowledge and the skill-set to lead themselves out of the mess we are leaving them in ……… but of course, to have a little fun on the way.”

Over the Milford Festival week the five story-telling sessions was appreciated by about 35 nursery and pre-school children and their parents.

Wings, a not-for-profit group, will be taking their stories and messages on the road later in the year to all nearby nursery, pre-school, church and library groups.

They can be contacted by phone on (01590) 619533, text (07771) 918449 or email Keith at keithmetcalf@btinternet.com

Colin Judson launches Crunch Time Fitness

Many in the village will know Colin Judson as an international opera singer who has entertained us in numerous shows around Milford on Sea.

Lockdown of course bought his career to a standstill and rather than simply wait for things to change, he has now trained to become qualified as a personal trainer and launched Crunch Time Fitness.

You can hear Colin's story and about his new services by clicking here.

Please click image to watch video

As Colin explains; "I can help you to improve your physical and mental health in a way that best suits you. My role will be to help you all the way, but I want you to be in charge of the process and whether it happens in your gym, a private gym (that I hire), the forest, your house, my garden or the cliff top – I’ll come up with a plan that fits you perfectly, whilst I provide encouragement, expert advice and support.

As you will see from this video, I am also a professional singer. As for most of us, the last 9 months have turned my world on its head and led to me re-evaluating my direction in life. Dictionaries tell us that a journey involves travel which could for example mean walking from one place to another but also moving from one situation to another one. The latter is what I have done and I have now decided that, on the basis of my experience, I want to use what I have learned to guide and support people who want to embark on a similar journey to improved fitness, health and well-being."

Jackson Mann invents SOS Family Card Game

Jackson Mann, a 15 year old teenager from Milford on Sea has created a card game called; 'SOS Save Our Species' to engage families with endangered species and habitat loss, pledging 100% of profits to charities. Working to raise funds for the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and other charities, Jackson aims to make a difference for wildlife.

Local young wildlife ambassadors will receive a copy of the game, and there are also plans to give all local primary schools a copy and hopes that this can be rolled out nationally in the future.

Playing 'SOS' is one way younger generations can discover fun facts about nature and wildlife, the threats they face and ways to protect them.

“If people were engaged in the natural world as much as they are in poker and Pokémon, we could make a positive impact,” said Jackson Mann, creator of SOS. “I fell in love with wildlife while watching the TV show Octonauts at 5 years old. Now, I’ve invented a fun card game that the whole family can play and has the WWF’s seal of approval.”

Click image to watch Jackson's YouTube video

Jackson has a Kickstarter crowd funding site with a plan to go on actual sale in July; first on Amazon and the WWF shop, then in high street shops after that (eg: WH Smiths and John Lewis).

To find out more about Jackson's Kickstarter, please click here.

Rachel Cox, senior new product development manager, WWF-UK said; “Everyone at WWF involved has been so impressed with Jackson’s knowledge of species and habitats. It’s inspiring to see how he’s turned his passion into action. We really hope this game shows young people the wonders of nature, with amazing pictures of different habitats from around the world and the fascinating WWF facts about different species.”

Jackson co-created SOS Global Edition with WWF experts to ensure the facts are accurate and the combination of species and habitats represents the real world. This edition even features the Lymington-Keyhaven Nature Reserve.

SOS is first launching with species from four global biomes; grassland, forest, polar and ocean. He is now working with the WWF to expand with special editions, including UK and Birds and Marine. There are also plans for expansion packs to add new biomes and advanced gameplay (with apex predators and invasive species).

About 'SOS Save Our Species' Card Game

Jackson Mann created SOS while on a wildlife exploration in Costa Rica in 2018.

'SOS' is a family card game emphasizing fun while exploring problems species face today. 'SOS' is published by Wild Dog Games; a not-for-profit games publisher, and has been co-created with the WWF. It’s perfect for those age 7+, requires 2-5 players and takes just 15 minutes to play.

SOS cards are plastic-free and manufactured from sustainable cards and ink. Each deck features real-life images of wildlife and their natural habitats.
