How I Got Here: Ross Clarke

Ross Clarke has recently featured in an article in BigHospitality, a major publication in the food and drink industry. The global food and drink director at interactive football and dining experience TOCA Social discusses his fascination with coffee, his time at The Fat Duck Experimental Kitchen, and being a very good sleeper.

Ross is a locally born chef who initially learnt his craft under the guidance of David Wykes, owner/head chef at Verveine Fishmarket Restaurant in the village.

Ross's impressive career has now seen him become the Global Food and Drink Director at TOCA Social.

From Verveine, ambitious Ross went to join Heston Blumenthal at The Fat Duck experimental kitchen in Bray. The Fat Duck is one of the world's most famous restaurants, which been awarded three Michelin stars and was voted Best Restaurant in the world in 2005.

Ross's career continued to develop, when he set up his own food consultancy & training business which operated in both the UK and Dubai in the UAE.

His career to date has also taken him to feature on the BBC TV Food and Drink programme, and in OK magazine.

Old Bank Clock ticks again

Following the recent article about the future of village's Millennium Clock, we were reminded about another clock which sits on a different building in Milford on Sea village centre.

The clock in question is in the roof apex on what was the old Lloyds Bank Building, which is now the home of Milford Explorers Day Nursery.

The buildings current owner, Gail Benes Bown had the external clock installed when she bought the 'Old Bank' and turned it into her chiropractic office back around 1999.

Gail was given a framed photo of the building when it was first built by Lloyds Bank. (Which you can see on the right.).

For many years the clock hands have been stuck on 8:50am and Gail had decided to replace it with a radio controlled, purpose built outdoor clock.

However, just a day away from ordering the clock, she received a call from Mark Sampson, a Milford on Sea based electrician who had been working in the building. He advised Gail to hold up on ordering a new clock as the old one was working again.

After so many years near the seafront, Gail was astonished as she didn’t think it possible. The clock even still lights up at night.

One snag, however, it’s not radio-controlled, and in a couple of weeks time, it will need to spring ahead an hour. However, happily, we understand that Mark has this covered.

New Charity Shop close to opening

The new and additional Community Centre Charity Shop is getting close to opening.

The existing Village Charity Shop on Church Hill, founded in 2010 will remain open and this new shop at 78 High Street (formerly Milford Travel) will become a new Retail Style Charity Outlet which will be smart, presentable and sell a range of quality donated goods at attractive prices.

The new store will feature a wider range of clothing and other goods that the smaller charity shop was previously unable to take. The aim is to display quality items to their full advantage, whilst the other Charity Shop remains as more of an 'Aladdin's Cave'.

The existing Charity Shop has contributed significant profits to the Community Centre over the last 12 years, helping with operating costs, and enabling the Community Centre to run the many community activities that they do today.

The new venture will be a key part of future funding to enable the Community Centre to continue to grow the centre’s activities, events, community services, facilities & future expansion to meet the needs of the growing population of Milford on Sea.

If you would like to donate any items to the new Charity Shop, please contact the Community Centre.

If you would like to volunteer to work in the new Charity Shop in the mornings, afternoons, or just occasionally; please contact:

Michael will be showing his latest creation, a majestic life-size stag.

Since moving to Milford on Sea in 2014, painter Julie Collins has been inspired by the spectacular Hampshire Coastline. She works with water-based paints, building layers of intrigue into her work, each piece taking a long time to complete.

Julie Collins
Palais des Vaches comprises of three inter-joining rooms that wrap around a beautiful courtyard garden featuring spectacular sculptures. The space has been lovingly transformed by Exbury Garden’s president Nick de Rothschild, and his wife, Caroline.

Starting with the magnificent milking parlour, affectionately named the ‘Cow Palace’, and built by Nick’s Grandfather, Lionel de Rothschild, a century ago, Nick and Caroline worked with a team of local builders, artisans, and crafts people to restore the buildings to “more than their former glory.”

The walls of the Palais now feature a collection of works by celebrated and lesser-known local artists, sculptors and ceramicists, along with a host of fantastic sculptures both inside and out. The venue is located at the end of a long gravel track, with magnificent views over the Beaulieu River to the Isle of Wight.

Caroline De Rothschild said: “The Palais Spring show aims to showcase a good collection of the weird and absurd alongside accessible affordable local works of art. So roll up, roll up - it’s going to be fab.”

The Spring Exhibition will be open:
  • March 25th and 26th from 11am to 4pm.
  • April 8th, 9th and 10th (Easter Weekend) from 11am to 4pm.
  • April 22nd and 23rd from 11am to 4pm.
  • April 29th and 30th from 11am to 4pm.
  • May 13th and 14th from 11am to 4pm.
  • June 24th from 11am to 4pm.
Palais des Vaches is located at Lower Exbury Farm, Inchmery Lane, Exbury, SO45 1AE.

About School of Comedy

School of Comedy teaches children the art of improvisation, sketch & stand up comedy.

Set up by Laura Lawson and Tara Carr in 2005, SOC encourages children to explore their own unique brand of improv, sketch and character comedy. Laura took the original troupe to the Edinburgh Festival in 2007 where they were given a Channel 4 pilot, followed by two hit E4 series.

School of Comedy was never really about the television. It was about the children loving the club and encouraging them to raise the bar through an anarchic, liberating workshops. not to mention being able to perform on stage making people laugh, creating exciting new ideas, and most importantly, watching their confidence grow.
