Still Raising Funds to Cover Costs:

Community event organisers, Diana & Tracy still need donations towards covering the cost of trees, lights, decorations, fixing nativity scenes, booking in qualified electricians and more...

So far they have raised just over £900 for generous locals, but they are still around 40% short of their target.

If you would like to make a donation towards this, or next year, please click here. Any amount is gratefully received to keep this wonderful village event going.

------------------
Thanks Go To:

Thanks go to all of the people who generously provided the funds to make everything happen.

This includes all of the local people who donated close to £2000 through JustGiving to enable this special Christmas event to happen.

Plus of course, the sponsors:

Gold Sponsor: Andy and Steve at Nixor Build Ltd.
Silver Sponsor: Suzy and Guy at The Smugglers.
Bronze Sponsor: The Levett and Bisley families. They are specifically sponsoring the lime tree at the top of the village green this year, for families who have lost the precious life of a child.

The families have sent these words to share with you all... "While Christmas joy may feel distant, their memories continue to shine bright in our hearts. Our families send sincere seasonal wishes and love to all".

The creators and organisers of Magical Milford at Christmas, Tracy Haupt and Diana Brushwood have once again worked hard to get everything in place to make the village look amazing this Christmas.

The village is very grateful for everything you create.

Our Village Crest Explained... (Sort of!)

Do you know what the images represent on the Milford on Sea Village Crest?

Well, the article below was published in July 2014 and we thought you might like to see it again:

No doubt someone knowledgeable from the Milford on Sea Historical Society can enlighten us, and perhaps even throw light on the crest's origin.

When faced with a question like this is, my approach is to make up the most inappropriate answer, and then wait for a grown up to provide the real facts.

So, here goes:

The Milford on Sea Crest contains two men standing on a set of scales representing how people in the village are quite good at balancing.

The first man holds a scythe representing a rice worker from the paddy fields around Sturt Pont, the second man is a tall boy scout, his wellington boots and fishing net in hand illustrate how they used to wade into the sea to catch octopus with a stick and bag. Both men following the village tradition of wearing trousers a size too large, hence the need for both a belt and braces.

In the most recent coloured version of the village crest, the man on the right has lost the bag in his hand. I can only assume that he dropped the bag on the way to his octopus hunting.

The crest itself is headed by a Keyhaven longboat, reminding us of our shipbuilding heritage, and of the time when our forefathers set sail to conqueror the Isle of Wight.

The Crown provides a memory of a former name of the village pub, now known as The Smugglers Inn, and finally the red rose of Lancashire represents all of those who have settled in the village from the North of England.

Interestingly, the text on both crests clearly say 'Milford-on-Sea'. The debate on the village name was enthusiastically and pointlessly researched as to whether the use of hyphens is correct some time ago and recently. The research came up with an inconclusive answer, much in the tradition of this news site.

If you can be bothered to read the ridiculous 'Hyphen research', please click here.

Over the years, the village crest
has appeared on some strange souvenir items.
It is possible, indeed almost certain, that all of these observations are nonsense, so if you can throw any light on any inaccuracies, please get in touch.
---------------------------------------

Following publishing the article above, regarding the Milford on Sea Village Crest, we had an interesting reply from Bob Braid of the Milford on Sea Historical Record Society back in 2014:

Bob, who is blighted with a similar sense of humour to my own, speculated with a wry smile; "The bloke on the left actually has a pickaxe & represents the men who dug the network of smugglers tunnels around the village. The ship is a poor representation of a Viking long ship and refers to the great battle between the Saxons and Danes when the stream ran red with blood and from which Danestream gets its name. The crown refers to Charles 1 imprisonment at Hurst Castle on passage to his trial and execution in London. The flower is not a rose, but the elusive Milford Pimpernel, also known as Paddy's Pride, which used to grow on the cliffs, hence Paddy's Gap." Mixing a few facts with some myths is a great way to create history!

Fortunately, he also has a more factual story. Bob explained that the Milford on Sea Village Crest first appeared on souvenir china in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. During those times, souvenir china was all the rage and it is extremely collectable today.

Bob said; "The first pieces were sold in Mrs Christie's shop and then soon taken up by other village shops. (Christie's was firstly located opposite where Verveine now is, and later where New Seasons Florists are and next to the old Post Office.)

click image to see more village souvenirs

Bob continued; "As far as we know, and we are willing to be convinced otherwise, you could select your design from elements in a pattern book and we think the crest was selected by Telford Stone, the printer and stationer in the village."

Interestingly, the Truro coat of arms has a remarkable resemblance to our own, which makes this explanation all the more likely.

Update from Bob Braid: "I now have considerable doubt that the design originated with Telford Stone. He married Mrs Christie's daughter in 1918 when he was 28 & she 21. Mrs Christie & her daughter came to Milford somewhere between the 1901 & 1911 censuses (or censi to be pedantic). Mrs Christie's husband died in January 1906 in Milford on Sea.

If the china was first available in her shop, it's probably more likely it was she that chose the original design; it depends on the date of the earliest available pieces (and if it was sold anywhere else before her shop) and I'm no expert. As always, more questions than answers!"

So there you go... the Milford on Sea Crest is as much a mystery as when we first started this article!

Help our Local Food Bank collecting Chocolate for Kids this Christmas

One of the many things New Forest Basics Food Bank do at Christmas is to send out advent calendars to every child in a family that receives a food parcel, and that will include some families here in Milford on Sea.

It would feel nice to put a smile on a less fortunate child's face with some extra chocolate for them to enjoy over Christmas.

If you can donate any chocolate advent calendar, or any other chocolate bars, your contribution would be very gratefully received.

As always, Mark at The Village News is more than happy to help by collecting any donations.

If you would like to drop off an advent calendar, or chocolate bars, the deadline is before Sunday 8th December 2024.

Drop donations in to: The Village News
74 High Street, Milford on Sea, SO41 0QD

PS: Mark has a large range of chocolate for kids, so why not pop in to buy a few bars to donate when next in the village.

PPS: For the advent calendars, we realise that December will have started, but we only found out about the appeal yesterday. I am sure the kids won't mind catching up by eating the past days chocolates in the advent calendar. Better late than never!

Pay Parking & Restrictions coming to Keyhaven

Over past months there have been proposals and consultations about parking in Keyhaven around the junction of New Lane and Saltgrass Lane near Cut Bridge on Hurst Spit.

The revised Hampshire County Council proposals have now been announced.

Locally, there has been an issue with the volume of motor caravans parking overnight, and alleged inconsiderate behaviour from a small minority of the campers. As with many such issues, there are split views in the village.

In March 2024 we reported about a Public Consultation on plans for parking charges in this area of Keyhaven. (If you would like to read this, please click here.)

The main changes to the original Hampshire County Council plan seem to be that there are now some limited free parking opportunities alongside the new pay-and-display parking places.

Map of parking changes
Having read the proposals, it appears that there are three sections of road that this will affect.

As with many official documents, it is not easy to read and immediately understand. So, this is our best interpretation:

1. On-Street Pay-and-Display Parking Places. Mondays to Sundays including bank holidays from 10am to 6pm.  No Motor Caravans 8pm to 8am.
So, it appears cars can park free from 6pm to 10am, which could work for early & late dog walkers, beach visitors, and night fisherman.

2. On-Street limited Waiting Parking Places. Mondays to Sundays including bank holidays from 10am to 6pm.  No Motor Caravans 8pm to 8am.
Parking free for one hour. No return in two hours.

3. No Waiting at Any Time.
Additional double yellow lines.

Parking Charges: £1 per hour. All Day: £8 | Season Tickets: 1 month: £194 - 3 months: £438 - Annual: £1168

There will be an objection period which runs from Friday 22nd November 2024 until Friday 13th December 2024.

To submit your views: Email public.notices@hants.gov.uk quoting reference: A2039/MJB, or in writing to Hampshire County Council, The Castle, Winchester, SO23 8UD.

All objections must state the grounds on which they are made. Under the requirements of current access to information legislation, any statement you make to the Council in response to this Notice may be made available to the press and to the public, who would be entitled to take copies of it if they so wished.

To read details on Hampshire County Council website, please click here.

PS: Similar parking charges are also be proposed for areas of Barton on Sea seafront.

Captain Crash & The Magic Hats launch another single 'Converse Universe'

Local band, Captain Crash & The Magic Hats, who feature two long-term Milford on Sea village residents, released their latest single 'Converse Universe' on the 22nd November 2024.

The song, Converse Universe explores the theme of isolation and the challenges of connection.

To watch the video and hear the new track, please click here.

Converse Universe is about how the metaphor of "orbiting worlds" represents individual realities that may intersect but often remain separate.

The lyrics convey a sense of melancholy and longing, suggesting the difficulty of finding lasting connection in a vast universe. The song's repetitive structure and melancholic tone contribute to its emotional impact, leaving the listener with a sense of introspection and contemplation about the complexities of human existence.

All of the Captain Crash & The Magic Hats singles and other tracks are now available on all major music platforms such as Spotify, Apple iTunes, Amazon Music and other music sources.

Their first radio friendly single entitled 'Anywhere' was launched in March 2024.

This was followed by the single 'Sunlight Shines' in July 2024.

----------------------
About Captain Crash & The Magic Hats

The band were born after a 2012 jam session with local musician Pauly Gordelier.

Their two demo albums blend bluesy rock with 60s/70s influences, adding psychedelic flair and ethereal melodies. Imagine The Smiths jamming with Lou Reed or Pink Floyd with Radiohead whispering in their ear.

Their music carries an ecological message, but it's the raw passion and storytelling that truly resonates. This is music for the soul, straight up and authentic.

Darrell 'Crash' Kennedy is the band's singer/songwriter & rhythm guitarist, and Greg, the drummer, both live in Milford on Sea.

Crash works as a community nurse, Greg is a drum tutor with published books for special needs kids

Update to Milford on Sea: Hyphens or no hyphens?

Following our recently published article, 'Milford on Sea: Hyphens or no hyphens?' we have an update:

A helpful reader has suggested that we check how the village is referred to the Domesday Book.

The Domesday Book is a manuscript record of the Great Survey of much of England and parts of Wales completed in 1086 at the behest of King William the Conqueror.

Sadly, we had done this previously, only to discover that the Domesday Book recorded our village in its old name of Melleford.

Bob Braid, a knowledgeable local historian, has bought to our attention to a map published in 1896 which tells another story.

In the late 1880s, Colonel William Cornwallis-West MP, owner of Newlands Manor, had an original intention to develop a high-class seaside resort in the village in order to exploit the property he owned with magnificent sea views on the top of Hordle Cliff.

He wanted to emulate what his friend, the Duke of Westminster, had done at Eastbourne. Plans included houses, a grand hotel, gardens, a hydropathic establishment, and a pier. There were also ambitions to try to install a railway station.

In preparation, new roads named after family and friends, e.g. Cornwallis Road, De la Warr Road, West Road, Whitby Road, Westminster Road and Pless Road were laid out on Hordle Cliff.

He originally wanted to call his resort Melleford-on-Sea.

However, the Salisbury & Winchester Journal of 26 March 1887 said that: "Having ascertained the opinion of many of the older residents, they were in favour of retaining the spelling of Milford, Col. Cornwallis-West MP has agreed to their wishes, merely suggesting the addition of "on Sea" to distinguish it from other places of the same name..."

The name 'Milford-on-Sea' was therefore to apply to his new seaside resort development on the cliff top, with the village being known as simply 'Milford'.

However, the plan never attracted the finance it needed and his vision was never realised.

His only son, George Cornwallis-West was made bankrupt in 1916. Colonel William Cornwallis-West died in 1917 and the family estates in Milford on Sea, including Newlands Manor, and most of its heirlooms was sold off to pay debts.

Historical Map Changes

Historical local maps held in the Frith Collection show that in 1850 and 1907 the village was known simply as Milford. However, a map in 1919 shows the village name now as Milford-on-Sea, with hyphens. An Ordnance Survey Map from 1940 shows the village name as Milford on Sea, without hyphens.

So, as always, clear as mud. The quest goes on!
