The shop will

The History of the Supermarket at 49 High Street in Milford on Sea

The Shop History & Previous Owners

In the early 1900's the shop at 49 High Street Milford on Sea, was a butchers owned by Harry James Butt. Sadly, on Friday 13th January 1911 when he was 52 years old, Harry tragically ended his own life by hanging whilst of unsound mind. - To read more about Harry Butt's life, please click here.

Around the 1930/40's the shop was Tate's Stores.

Later, for many years from the 1950/60's, the shop was Plumbly's Stores, which was a grocers and included a sweet shop.

In the late 1990's Spar operated a supermarket in the building.

Then, in 1999 the Spar store was purchased by Paul & Maureen Holland as an independent franchise supermarket. Over time they changed the name to become Holland's of Milford. As well as a supermarket, the shop became a delicatessen which included an impressive cheese counter, offered hot snacks & drinks, and Paul ran daily home deliveries, particularly supporting the elderly in the village.

Paul & Maureen ran the shop for 21 years until retiring in 2020. During this time the store had moved from  the Spar franchise, to become part of the Nisa family of independent grocers.

Kularaj Pathmanathan purchased the Holland's of Milford store when Paul & Maureen Holland retired in 2020, Kularaj remained owning and operating the shop until 2024.

In March 2024, the independently owned store was purchased by Punit Patel (who was also happy to be known as Nick) to become a One Stop franchise, which is part of the Tesco group. In June 2024, Punit invested in a major makeover for the store and it was renamed as 'One Stop Working with Milford'.

Monthly Social Deaf Club on Tuesday - Everyone invited

Hard of hearing, or not, everyone is welcome at the next Social Deaf Club is on Tuesday 4th June 2024 in The Cave.

This informal club is a free 'Drop-In' event where anyone can come into The Cave to chat & meet new people on the First Tuesday of Every Month. Just drop in anytime from 5pm to 8pm

Something people fortunate enough to have good hearing, might not realise is that social spaces are often tricky for deaf and hard of hearing people due to inconspicuous background noise.

Also, meeting other people that struggle with their hearing, or people who have some knowledge of British Sign Language, or simply meeting people who are happy to chat to deaf people, is not that easy.

Well, this is where the Social Deaf Club comes in.

Drop in to The Cave on any First Tuesday of the Month between 5pm to 8pm to join in the monthly get-togethers.

The evening is informal, free, and simply provides a space where people who hear well or not, can chat over a drink or Tapas. To make things as comfortable as possible, background noise is minimised with things like drinks chillers temporarily turned off.

The idea is simply to bring people together to socialise in a safe and comfortable environment.

Just drop in for drink and a chat.

Pet dogs also welcome!

The free Social Deaf Club evenings are hosted by Nancy Weatherson. Nancy is a local resident, a Deaf Communications Professional, and founder of FeelHear.

Nancy also runs Deaf Awareness and Introduction to British Sign Language courses in the village for Milford on Sea residents.
