About Milford on Sea Community Library

In 2020, Hampshire County Council withdrew funding, and Milford on Sea Library was forced to close on 20th March 2020.

The library had been located in Milford on Sea Village Hall for several years. The Village Hall is operated by the trustees of the Milford Village Association (MVA) and they were happy for the library to stay.

So, the Library team, of Jill Neil, Liz Everard, Clare Johnston and several others, set about founding Milford on Sea Community Library in consultation with Hampshire County Council. Their quest was successful, and Milford on Sea Community Library became an independent library, run by volunteers, on 16th March 2021.

During Lockdown in 2020, to help keep community spirits up, the Library Team and Milford Mutual Aid with Jenny Whitely and valuable volunteers produced The Good News Newsletter, which was circulated throughout the village. A mini version of TGN as it has become known, continues to be published in the Village Voice Magazine.

The Milford on Sea Village Hall is also used by various community group and always willing to accommodate events, presentations and classes where possible.

PƩtanque Pitch in Nice

Random Car Stranded on Rock Near Hurst Spit

The Advertiser & Times captured some dramatic pictures of a crashed Audi A1 car that was left mounted on a rock, with its front end dipping into the water, off New Lane in Milford on Sea, near Hurst Spit.

It appears the car did not take the sharp left, almost right angle corner in New Lane, and went straight on, flying onto the rock.

The A&T amusingly shared some quips, including “Caught between a rock and a hard place”, “Is this what they mean by an overflow car park?”; and “Audi do that?”

The police were called at 8.26pm on Thursday 27th February 2025. Apparently, three occupants of the vehicle were reported to have walked away from the scene. The police are making enquiries into the incident.

-----------------------
Milford Girls Cricket Club

The Milford Girls Cricket teams started when Carolyn Brown and some other local coaches made a number of homemade cricket videos during the first Covid Lockdown in March 2020, and then invited Milford on Sea Primary School to form some girls cricket teams. Since then, the teams have grown from strength to strength.

The teams play at Barnes Lane Recreation Ground and train weekly during the season to play in three teams; The Heys, The Hoes and The Flints (named after Rachael Heyhoe Flint, the former English Women’s Captain).

In the first two seasons, from complete novices, nine girls played District Cricket, with two featuring in the U11 Hampshire Girls squad. Five Y4 Milford schoolgirls were crowned Hampshire U9 Champions, and eight of the U11s became Hampshire Champions or Runners-up in both softball and hardball.

Milford on Sea Primary School also won the Girls Dynamos Cricket Hampshire County Final after taking a staggering 10 wickets at the Ageas Bowl on Tuesday 28th June 2022.

In 2023, the three Milford on Sea Primary School teams entered the New Forest School Sports Partnership Girls Dynamo Cricket Tournament held at Calmore Cricket Club on Thursday 25th May. They each won all of their final matches, securing a clean sweep of 1st places and Gold Medals for Milford on Sea.

At the same tournament, and for the second year in a row, The Heys brought back the NFSSP trophy and qualified for the Hampshire County Finals to be played on 20th June 2023 at the Ageas Bowl.

Since then the girls have kept winning.

SLAK fighting to Save Hurst Spit

At the beginning of January we published an article about a new a campaign group called 'Save Lymington and Keyhaven' (SLAK) who were formed to fight the proposals for the planned long-term abandonment of Hurst Spit, and the potential effect on the Danes Stream, Keyhaven and Lymington River.

Since then, the RNLI have commented that the Hurst Spit Plan is “misguided” and “ridiculous”.

Hurst Spit: February 2025
Photo taken by Chris Runeckles
It is worth noting that the Hurst Spit has
been storm damaged like this several
times in the past and with a little help,
has mainly naturally regenerated.
The SLAK group now includes The Royal Lymington and Lymington Town sailing clubs, Keyhaven Yacht Club, Hurst Castle Sailing Club, Wightlink, Lymington RNLI, Lymington Yacht Haven, Berthon Boat Company and Lymington Marina.

Recently, SLAK met with the Environment Agency, to which they responded ‘We are listening. It remains to be seen if any of the plans change.

As the Hurst Spit to Lymington Strategy currently stands, the draft plan is to maintain the existing shape of Hurst Spit for the next 10 to 20 years. After which, active management would be reduced, eventually allowing the shingle formation to return to a more natural form.

In other words, changing from a 'Hold the Line' strategy to a 'Managed Retreat'.

Hurst Spit
To read more, please click here.

However, a plan to ‘roll back’ the sea wall along sections of the coast has been heavily criticised by local sailing clubs and marine organisations, which say it could cause Lymington River to become unnavigable, and severely affect local marine businesses, and ultimately be a threat to Lymington itself.

With Hurst Spit breached, Hurst Castle would potentially no longer have any access from the land.

Mister Pink's fish & chip shop was founded over 50 years ago by Malcolm 'Mac' Pink. Following Mac's retirement, his son, Steve Pink took control of running Mister Pink's until recently.

The popular takeaway was originally located in the high street towards Keyhaven before moving to its current location on Church Hill, Milford on Sea many years ago.

Steve Pink had been at the heart of Mister Pinks for over 40 years, before in December 2024 taking well-earned retirement.

Ella and Dave purchased the long-standing and much valued village fish & chip shop in December 2024.

On taking over, the couple introduced an extended menu, specials, a kids menu, and a brand new logo for the business.

From 1 April 2025, New Forest District Council (NFDC) will be applying a 100% Council Tax premium for properties which are furnished and are not occupied as anyone's permanent residence. Effectively, doubling the council tax for second home owners.

It is envisaged that Hampshire County Council with use 70% of the additional revenue which will include specific funding for Adult Social Care, Town and Parish Councils will get 5%.

Other beneficiaries will be the Police and Crime Commissioner for Hampshire, New Forest District Council, and the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service.
