Council Tax Doubled for Second Homes in the Village

From 1 April 2025, New Forest District Council (NFDC) will be applying a 100% Council Tax premium for properties which are furnished and are not occupied as anyone's permanent residence. Effectively, doubling the council tax for second home owners.

The concept is to encourage owners of second homes to make their properties available to be used as a permanent residence to increase the housing supply for local households.

The NFDC also states that this will 'Raise additional revenue to support the vital services provided to our local communities.'

It is envisaged that Hampshire County Council with use 70% of the additional revenue which will include specific funding for Adult Social Care, Town and Parish Councils will get 5%.

Other beneficiaries will be the Police and Crime Commissioner for Hampshire, New Forest District Council, and the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service.

There are some exceptions where the premium will not apply which are listed here.
