History of Milford on Sea Baptist Church

The Milford on Sea Baptist Church building is one of the oldest Baptist churches in the New Forest region.

The church was founded in 1816 by Mr Evans, who in a period of five years saw over one hundred people join the congregation. He also oversaw the building of the church in Barnes Lane.

(In 1909, a small group of members under the leadership of Mr T. Hames and Mr C. Spreadbury broke away from the Milford on Sea Baptist Church to form the Milford on Sea Free Baptist Church. At the time, Tom Hames was the owner of Milford Tea Rooms at 11 High Street.

Their initial meetings were held behind what is today the Parish Council Office at 22 High Street, Milford on Sea. In 1911 they moved to create the Free Baptist Church at 108 High Street, Milford on Sea. When it opened, the building comprised a Church with a Schoolroom behind it, a vestry, kitchen and toilet. Gradually the congregation numbers fell away, and the church was sold to the become the Milford on Sea Methodist Church.)

Under the subsequent leadership of Rev Turquand, the original Milford on Sea Baptist Church manse was added, and the Jireh chapel in Tiptoe (now Wellspring Church) was founded.

In 1964, by developing land surrounding the Church, the present manse and church hall were built, along with additional car parking. Later in the 1990's the organ was up-dated, and a new floor and baptistry installed.

As the church moved into a new millennium, multi-media and a new PA system were installed. In September 2010 a tea point area was added to the rear of the Church, enabling a time for refreshments and fellowship to take place at the end of the services.

About Milford on Sea Baptist Church

Sunday services have an average attendance of 30 to 40 people. The services are quite informal, and energetically mix different traditions, old, new and in-between, with a strong focus on communal singing.

Tea and coffee is served after the morning service and everybody is made to feel welcome, both residents of the area and holiday-makers, whether believers, seekers or sceptics.

Recorded sermons are available on the church website.

The Milford on Sea Baptist Church is very friendly, and welcomes people of all ages. Although there are no regular children’s activities, there are toys provided for any young children who may visit.

The church also hosts various events throughout the year, such as quizzes, coffee mornings, and other activities for people to meet, and to bring the community together. They also collect tools for TWAM (Tools with a Mission) who then restore them and ship them out for use in Africa.

---------------------
Community Church Activities

Keyhaven Quay Songs of Praise - 2019
In addition to activities held in the church, they work with other Milford churches by supporting Keyhaven Songs of Praise, the Christians Together services on Milford on Sea village green, as well as Carols on the Green at Christmas.

In April 2022, the church hosted a very well attended, and fun community street party to celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.

A commemorative Cytisus tree was planted in the church garden to mark the occasion.

---------------------
200th Anniversary - 2006

To celebrate their 200th anniversary, the church hosted a number of special events, in addition to the regular quizzes and worship services which included a Flower Festival in the May when a few hundred people visited the church in Barnes Lane.

Most of the 21 separate displays were based on passages from the Bible, and a lot of talent and imagination had gone into the flower arrangements.  The beneficiary of the event wasn’t the church itself but Oakhaven Hospice, which as a result received a donation of several hundred pounds.

Other events included; a concert with local professional opera singer, Colin Judson, along with his wife, Pippa Judson at the end of February 2006. Also held was a Café Church, a Missions Day in March 2016, and a concert with a young singer-songwriter whose grandparents were members of the church.

To close the anniversary celebrations, an Anniversary Concert with Boscombe Salvation Army was held on the 2nd July 2016.

Steve Pink had been at the heart of Mister Pinks for over 40 years, before in December 2024 taking well-earned retirement.

Garry & Sarah create a song in memory of his brother

Fellow Keyhaven residents, Garry Eveleigh sent his friend Sarah Warwick, some words he had written about his brother Terry and asked if she could turn it into a song.

This resulted in the song "You Left No Goodbye”, which also became a video in a collaboration between Garry, Sarah and her brother Daniel Warwick.

The tribute song was inspired by Garry's feeling towards the loss of his brother, Terry who died in tragic motorcycle accident in the New Forest, in November 1969.

Garry posted this heartfelt personal message on the YouTube recording of the song:

"We were teenagers when my big bro was taken in a tragic accident. We had grown up together and were inseparable.

In my grief I kept imagining that he would just walk back through the door - he never did.

Many years later I had a strange, chance visit from an unknown, unannounced psychic medium - Terry had asked him to come to me and let me know that everything now was ok.

If you’ve lost someone without getting that chance to say goodbye, this song is for you.

We hope you enjoy it."

The song is dedicated to all who have lost someone without being able to say goodbye.

Sarah has a background in music, having had 5 hit pop records, and appearing on Top of the Pop in her recording name of Sarah Washington.

She has also had a career as a primary school teacher, and today she is a public speaker, and a soul healer running creative retreats and singing/songwriting courses.

SLAK formed to fight changes to Hurst Spit

At the beginning of this month we published an article which highlighted the planned long-term changes to Hurst Spit and the Danes Stream, we now understand that a new a campaign group called 'Save Lymington and Keyhaven' (SLAK) has been formed to fight the proposals.

The draft plan is to maintain the existing shape of Hurst Spit for the next 10 to 20 years. After which, active management would be reduced, eventually allowing the shingle formation to return to a more natural form.

Hurst Spit
To read more, please click here.

The campaign group, 'Save Lymington and Keyhaven' (SLAK) has been formed by sailing clubs and local organisations who would be severely affected. Members include; The Royal Lymington and Lymington Town sailing clubs, Keyhaven Yacht Club, Hurst Castle Sailing Club, Wightlink, Lymington RNLI, Lymington Yacht Haven, Berthon Boat Company and Lymington Marina.

However, a plan to ‘roll back’ the sea wall along sections of the coast has been heavily criticised by local sailing clubs and marine organisations, which say it could cause Lymington River to become unnavigable, and severely affect local marine businesses, and ultimately be a threat to Lymington itself. With Hurst Spit breached, Hurst Castle would no longer have any access from the land.

The public have until January 11th 2025 to have a say on the draft proposals. Comments can be sent to HurstSpit2Lymington@environment-agency.gov.uk.

Hurst Spit to Lymington Strategy have now published a response to recent concerns. To find out more, please visit www.hurstspit2lymington.co.uk
