Saltwater becomes Melleford

The two Saltwater's in the village are no more, one has now been renamed to Melleford. Both are continuing to offer their trademark delicious food and still being run by Tony and Becca Michael.

The new Melleford name has a clear & interesting, if not obvious, meaning. The name also has a close connection to the village, and all is explained at the foot of this article.

The website will be updated to show the food menus for both locations.

Table bookings can be made for either venue by calling Becca on 01590 718390. If you are unsure which venue you would like to visit, she can also explain both menus.

In the near future it is planned for Melleford to open on Friday and Saturday evenings. As soon as this happens, we will let you know.

----------------------
About Saltwater & Melleford

Saltwater at 106 High Street has been in Milford on Sea village since 2016 and is owned & run by Tony and Becca Michael. They offer a delicious premium breakfast, brunch or Lunch.

In June 2023 Saltwater moved to 60 High Street and opened at the foot of Milford on Sea Village Green, with a pop-up art gallery temporarily moving into 106 High Street.

In March 2024, Saltwater moved back to 106 High Street with a new look & menu.

Melleford then opened where Saltwater had been at 60 High Street. The new venue has its own stylish menu and now opens 7 days a week.

Both of these 5 Star Food Hygiene Rated café restaurants are owned & run by Tony & Becca, and provide varied, interesting & tasty menus. All of the dishes are made fresh to order, and dishes on the menu have 'a twist' from breakfast, brunch and through to lunch.

They use premium ingredients from local suppliers where possible, and they specialises in creative, mouth-watering and different dishes.

There are also vegan and gluten free meal options. The extensive drinks menu includes; speciality coffees, numerous teas, hot chocolates, iced coffee, smoothies and milkshakes.

Both Saltwater & Melleford are dog friendly venues. They are also available for private events and even outside catering.

From Melleford to Milford-on-Sea

In the Domesday Book of 1086 the village was an established Saxon settlement and known as Melleford. At the time it had an estimated population of around 50 people.

For a short time, the village became known Melleford on Sea, before settling on the current name, Milford on Sea. The origin of the name Milford is simply 'A Mill by a Ford'.

It is believed that The Old Mill sits on the site of a mill dating back to the Domesday Book, over a thousand years ago.

The Old Mill is Grade II-listed, and the home undertook a magnificent makeover around 2017. Click here to read more. Click here to read more.

Until early last century Milford on Sea was essentially an agricultural settlement centred on the village green and the High Street.

Melleford Restaurant overlooks the village green which is the last remains of the original ancient common land.

Many tales persist of smuggling in the area, thanks to the parish’s ideal proximity to the coast and forest.

Today the village population is in the region of 5000 people.

Milford on Sea based organisers, Keith & Fiona explained that the change of venue from The Bridge is purely to provide a larger capacity and purpose built bar.

Whilst we do not normally feature venues outside of the village, we do like to support any initiatives with a close association to the village.

L8R are a Milford on Sea based music events organiser and play the very best 1990s house music and recreate memories of club nights and raves of yesteryear.

Since the previous event, Keith at L8R has invested in a significantly upgraded sound rig to give a full club experience. There will also be lasers and a new smoke machine!

On the evening, Keith, host DJ and organiser will be joined by the DJ Joe Muggs, a lifelong DJ & music journalist, who has played at some of London's most legendary 1990s venues, including Ministry of Sound, and The End. Most recently he was the warm up DJ for the Leftfield Tour 2023 at the O2. Joe will be starting the night with some classic vocal house from the 1990s, all on Vinyl.

Take your 90's outfits, smiley faces, bucket hats and great attitude.

Tickets: £14 + £1 booking fee. Please click here to book.

Music starts from 6.30pm to 11pm - Over 18's only.

L8R is an inclusive event - disabled access throughout.

Looking for memories of Bradley the New Forest Bear

A quest is underway to collect warm memories of Bradley the New Forest Bear.

These delightful children's books were written and illustrated by talented Milford Sea author and artist, Christine Rix.

The first book in the charming Bradley the New Forest Bear seven part book series was published in July 2004, having started writing & illustrating them in 1993.

The series went on to follow Bradley's many fun adventures around Milford on Sea and nearby.

You can share all of the stories and memories you may have of these books, their fabulous storylines, and Christine's original hand painted illustrations.

To add your memories or stories of Bradley, please click here.

Christine still has and cherishes the original Bradley, who was hand-made by LJ Bears in Lymington.

It would be wonderful for Christine to see all the love for the stories she created, and to also hear about the joy they once, and hopefully still do, bring to children.

-----------------------------------

About Vinegar Hill Pottery

Vinegar Hill Pottery is a small family-owned pottery, and boutique bed and breakfast, which is very much a family affair.

Dave Rogers is a master potter who runs his pottery workshop from the premises and offers tuition to aspiring ceramic artists. His wife, Lucy oversees the management and day-to-day running of this delightful three-room accommodation.

Both originate from Lymington in the New Forest. Dave spent his murky college years studying ceramics at Farnham College of Art and Design and working at Wrecclesham Pottery. He graduated in Ceramics 1997 and then started up on his own. He moved to Bristol in 1999 where he set up his own work spaces at The Botany Art Studios.

Vinegar Hill B&B Accommodation

There are no identikit rooms at Vinegar Hill. You can pick your accommodation from the spacious Garden Room, the secluded Hayloft or enjoy the delights of Rosie, a beautifully restored nineteenth century showman's wagon for a truly unique experience.

With a degree in all things Latin American from Bristol University, Lucy spent time living and studying in Latin America before settling in Bristol and working for ten years for a travel company that specialised in offbeat Latin America. Her job involved travel to small, remote and unique lodges and hotels throughout the continent. This fuelled her passion for travel and gave her the experiences and know-how of what does and doesn’t work for individual, boutique accommodation, and the grounding for Vinegar Hill accommodation.

Vinegar Hill Pottery Courses

Dave's skill as a potter is matched only by his ability as a teacher and patience with those who are new to the kinetic delights of the potter's wheel, giving you the ultimate hands-on experience.

Regular pottery courses are open to residents and non-residents alike.

To see next Pottery Courses: Please click here.

Vinegar Hill Pottery Shop & Gift Vouchers

Vinegar Hill Pottery offer Gift Vouchers to make a special present for someone you know.

Dave also sells his large range of high-fired stoneware pots, cups, plates, platters, and kitchenware.

All are all hand-made by him on his potters wheel. They are also oven proof, dishwasher proof and microwavable. He is happy to take commissions if you would like something bespoke.

You may have seen Dave's handmade basins featured on the BBC's 'The Great Pottery Throwdown'.

The high quality hand thrown ceramic basins and sinks come in a variety of styles and finishes. The Single bowl hand basins look great recessed into, or mounted on top of vanity units and washstands.
