New 'Pop-in' Social Deaf Club at The Cave

The Social Deaf Club is a 'Pop-in' event where anyone can come into The Cave to chat & meet new people from 5pm to 8pm on the First Tuesday of Every Month.  Hard of hearing, or not, everyone is welcome.

Something people fortunate enough to have good hearing might not realise is that social spaces are often tricky for deaf and hard of hearing people due to inconspicuous background noise.

Also, meeting other people that struggle with their hearing, or people who have some knowledge of British Sign Language, or simply meeting people who are happy to chat to deaf people, is not that easy.

Well, this is where the Social Deaf Club comes in.

Drop in to The Cave on Tuesday 6th February 2024 between 5pm to 8pm for the first of the monthly get-togethers. After that, the evening takes place at the same time, every first Tuesday in the month.

The evening is informal, and simply provides a space where people who hear well or not, can chat over a drink or Tapas. To make things as comfortable as possible, background noise is minimised with things like drinks chillers temporarily turned off.

The idea is simply to bring people together to socialise in a safe and comfortable environment.

Just drop in for drink and a chat.

Pet dogs also welcome!

The evening is hosted by Nancy Weatherson. Nancy is a local resident, a Deaf Communications Professional, and founder of FeelHear. Nancy also runs British Sign Language courses in the village for Milford on Sea residents.

Volunteer Opportunities at Hurst Castle

Are you interested in local history? Are you thinking of volunteering in 2024? Then check out Hurst Castle's three very dedicated volunteer groups.

The Friends of Hurst Castle is a local active support group, who provide regular help from enhancement of the building, to meeting and greeting visitors, to financially helping with any current project.

Milford on Sea Historical Record Society is one of the oldest local history societies in the country. Their members are conducting research into elements of the castle's long history, including life on the spit, to enhance knowledge, their archives and future castle interpretation.

Finally, we have a small group from the Association of Lighthouse Keepers, who work on a voluntary basis almost every Monday, come rain or shine. They spend a lot of time thinking up ideas for new lighthouse-related exhibits for visitors and are responsible for the refurbishing, setting up and maintaining of the two ALK Museum Rooms.

If you would like to become a member of any of these groups, please contact the Friends of Hurst Castle in the first instance; for more information, please click here.

To date there had been over 350 objections on the New Forest District Council website. Many of the objections were on the basis that the local infrastructure cannot support so many new houses.

Concerns included unmanageable pressure on resources such as the school and doctors. Additional traffic, village parking and potential flooding were also mentioned.

RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch Weekend

Join in with the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch for one hour between Friday 26th to Sunday 28th January 2024.

It started in 1979 as an idea for an activity for children to do in winter. The RSPB expected a few hundred participants but when the idea featured on Blue Peter, more than 34,000 children submitted results!

Now of course, it’s not just for children, it’s for everyone including the most experienced ornithologists.

Big Garden Birdwatch is the UK's biggest citizen science wildlife survey. By taking part, you can help the RSPB understand how garden birds are doing right now.

To take part, simply spend an hour watching the birds in your area, record the birds that land, and then submit your results.

Milford FC 1983 Division Champions

Long-term village resident, Paul Noble recently published an interesting photograph of the successful Milford on Sea FC 2nd Team on the Milford & Keyhaven Real Locals News & Views Facebook page.

The team particularly enjoyed the 1983 season, as they were crowned Division Champions.

Milford on Sea FC 2nd Team
Division Champions 1983
Not only will the photo bring back happy memories for the players, the photo is also interesting for another unusual reason.

If you look closely, you will see that each players' shirt had a different local business sponsor.

Paul Noble, who was player/manager at the time, had come up with the creative concept of giving local businesses the opportunity to support individual players with shirt sponsorship. This seemed a good idea, as it enabled more local businesses to get involved with the team at a much lower price than full team shirt sponsorship. However, what seemed a sensible idea had broken Football Association rules, and Paul felt the wrath of the county football authorities!

Some of the businesses are still around in the village today, such as Milford Motors (Now The Garage), Crown Inn (Now The Smugglers), Milford Social Club, Collins & Butler Estate Agent, and The Red Lion Hotel (Now The Lazy Lion).

No longer trading as far as we can establish; Monks Fishmongers, John Whitlock Builders, Sports & Leisure Milford, L.S.Jury Newsagent, Milford Livestock, L&M Milford, and The White Horse.

Jeff Jury recalled; "Brilliant memories. We got banned from wearing those shirts because apparently you had to have a sole sponsor. I still think it was a great idea to get individual shirt sponsors. I guess the powers that be had never suffered the tremendous difficulties involved in raising funds to keep a club running. I was very disappointed with Ian Wooldridge, Daily Mail’s famous sports writer (born in Bashley) coming out in print criticising this idea."

Milford on Sea FC players identified in the photo include:

Front Row (Left to Right): Jeff Jury, Bob Furnell, Paul Noble (Player/Manager), Donald Read, Binksy Setchell.

Back Row (Left to Right): Far Left: Les Hicks, Centre: Julian Angel, 3rd from Right: Stephen Haines, Far Right: Richard Golledge.

Curtain come down on successful Pantomime

Brenda Evans, Director of the successful 2024 Village Pantomime has sent this message:

"My thanks to everyone involved with “Jack & The Beanstalk” and to our audiences who supported us again this year. Many people have said it was the best ever!

We had two highlights this year: the first was the beanstalk growing which produced cries of astonishment from the audiences: “Oohs! Aahs! Wows! Amazing! How did they do it?!” Followed by rapturous applause. (And, no, we didn’t order it from Amazon!) The second was the Wild West Saloon – yes, very unusual in a pantomime – but such fun – especially the fight between Wild Bill and Billy the Kid."

The pantomime is such a popular annual community event that every performance was sold out. Tickets for next year with go on sale in October 2024.

This fun, yet professionally organised event, brings together people of different age groups, as cast and crew, who often make lasting friendships, and everyone is welcome to be part of it.

If you would like to be involved in next year’s panto, please contact Brenda at: brendavoce@hotmail.com or 07702 858987. In particular, they need someone to help with administration.
