Milford Tennis & Squash Club History

Many of us may pass the Milford Tennis & Squash Club in Lucerne Road, Milford on Sea, but do you know the club's history?

The club actually started as Milford Country Club in 1927 and became a member of the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) in 1935. Although tennis has always been the major sporting activity at the club, in the early years croquet and hockey were also played.

In 1936 the first squash court was built on the site and in 1950 the Squash Club, previously a separate club, merged with the Country Club. The club originally had three grass courts and four hard courts and, during these early years, the members largely played social tennis with a limited number of matches being arranged with other local clubs.

The club purchased the freehold of its 1.8 acre site in Lucerne Road in 1945.

Milford on Sea has always been a popular venue for junior tennis players and has since 1938, hosted one of Hampshire's largest Junior Tennis Tournaments.

In the late 1990‘s, the Club changed its focus to include competitive tennis, thus providing opportunities for members of all abilities to participate in internal tournaments as well as in matches with neighbouring clubs.

In 2001 the Club changed its name to the Milford Tennis and Squash Club and subsequently obtained the services of a full time professional coach.

In 2007/8, the Club carried out major improvements to the Clubhouse which included providing new changing rooms, toilets and kitchen facilities as well as refurbishing the whole of the premises. The full cost of £140,000 was met from club funds.

Unfortunately, at 5.25pm on Boxing Day 2009, a devastating fire destroyed approximately 50% of the Club premises, sparing only the new kitchen and squash courts.

Crews totalling 20 firefighters battled the blaze for two and half hours. Almost half of the single-storey sports facility was scorched by the fire and the whole building suffered smoke damage. Thankfully, nobody was injured in the fire.

In a little over a year, the Clubhouse was totally rebuilt using the money from the insurance claim, with an additional £29,000 from club funds being used to improve and upgrade the facilities.

The new Clubhouse was formally opened in February 2010 by Mark Cox, the former Davis Cup tennis player, and today the Club is fortunate to have a large function room, and lounge bar capable of hosting events for up to 60 people.

The management of the club is in the hands of the Executive Committee, which consists of a President, Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer and representatives of each of the Club’s main sections. The Club is run entirely on a voluntary basis and depends on the participation of a large number of the over 600 members. Social events are organized throughout the year, and both internal and open tennis tournaments held regularly. In addition to this, there are lots of informal events for children.

Racketball, squash, table tennis, bridge, mah-jong and have also become important activities enjoyed by club members.

The club has seven high quality floodlit artificial grass courts which are much admired by visiting players, two heated squash/racketball courts with viewing gallery, bar and lounge, disabled facilities and more.

Milford Tennis and Squash Club is family friendly, and all activities can be played with friends, family, or played competitively in different leagues and events.

New members are always warmly welcomed. Pop down and take a look!

About Friends of NCF

In 2007 the founders of Friends of NCF, Steve and Liz Jennings went to Kampala. Whilst there they met some inspirational local Ugandans who had begun a small mission teaching slum children and supporting their families. They returned home determined to help the children and families living in the slum community in Namuwongo and ‘Friends’ was born.

Support started with the sponsorship of children in secondary education and then developed into fundraising for a school building. As the project continued to grow, ‘Friends’ began to finance a feeding programme to help the undernourished children receive a meal during their school day.

Friends of NCF also provide a free newsletter for moral or financial supporters, and welcome anyone wishing to do a fundraising event or challenge. To find out more please contact Matthew at: office@friendsofncf.org

Meet Helen - Your Social Prescriber

The Milford on Sea League of Friends Health Hub invites you to 'Meet Helen - Your Social Prescriber' on Thursday, 29th June at 11am in the Milford Memorial Hospital. This is a free event and open to all, and provides an opportunity to  meet Helen and hear her talk about her work as a social scriber in the village.

We know of the pressures upon GPs and hospitals, the reduction of localised services, and sometimes we need extra support but are unsure who to ask.

In this ever changing health system, there is now ‘social prescribing’. It is an approach which connects people to activities, groups and services in the local community, meeting the individual’s practical, social and emotional needs; all of these affect our health and wellbeing. The social prescriber’s remit also covers support to existing and new community services.

Come and meet Helen Clarke who is the Social Prescriber based at Milford Surgery. She will talk about her role working with individuals seeking support and services and the groups and agencies who provide these. The NHS website describes the social prescribing link workers as ‘giving people time, focusing on what matters to me.’

You are invited to the free: Concert for Tony

A free musical extravaganza can be enjoyed by everyone at the 'Concert for Tony' on Saturday 22nd July from 1pm to 3pm at All Saints Church, Milford on Sea.

The concert will feature the music of Milford on Sea choirs and singers:

Total Voice Contemporary Choir singing a mix of rock and pop songs. Today the choir has 65 members and offers inspirational music, fun and friendship within our community.

Milford Choralia is a chamber choir of 30 based in the village. They have a broad repertoire ranging from Bach to present-day musicals showcasing joyous music.

Straight Banana are a multi talented a cappella group of five ladies with a repertoire of truly eclectic songs.

The concert will also feature a song written by Tony's son Matt. who performs internationally as Aqualung. Matt shot to fame in 2002 after his debut single, Strange and Beautiful, was used in a Volkswagen TV advert. Matt has released numerous albums, and won a Grammy Award in 2020.

His love of music had come from Tony, who had run a record shop for many years.

The concert is a charity event and all cash raised will be donated to Oakhaven Hospice in memory of Tony Hales. Please add the date to your diary.

Tony was a long time member of Total Voice Choir, Milford Choralia, West Gallery Choir and a regular volunteer at the Community Centre (Now The Bridge). He was a big part of Village life – someone who would always say ‘Yes’ and do whatever he could to help. Tony bore his illness with great spirit and his strength and character were an inspiration which is why we want to make this an event to honour his memory.

The concert is a celebration of Tony's life, so it will include many of his favourite songs

The concert organisers appreciate know these are difficult times but please give whatever cash you can (sorry they don’t have a card machine!).

Everyone is invited, so come along to enjoy an afternoon of uplifting music with beautiful harmonies and a touch of humour.
