World Monuments Watch Day at Hurst Castle

Saturday 21st September saw Hurst Castle celebrate a World Monuments Watch Day with a full day of exciting events. Organised at Hurst Castle by the Coastal Connections initiative – a joint venture between English Heritage and World Monuments Fund (WMF).

The Watch Day is one of many public events held at heritage sites worldwide to highlight the importance of vibrant community engagement and local stewardship in the sustainable preservation of heritage sites. The Tudor fortress, which was named on the 2022 World Monuments Watch, celebrated the occasion through a variety of activities from displays, re-enactments, and informative talks to musket-firing demonstrations. Entry to the Watch Day event at Hurst Castle was free for visitors.

Alex Kent, World Monuments Fund Britain Coastal Connections Lead, said: “World Monuments Fund is thrilled to be joining Hurst Castle’s Watch Day festivities. Hurst was nominated to our Watch programme to call attention to how coastal heritage sites are being impacted by climate change. We’re looking forward to marking Watch Day with a host of activities showcasing what makes Hurst Castle so unique and celebrating local communities.”

The day was a great success with many local families attending. Thanks go to the Fort Cumberland Guard who held two 19th-century displays including musket-firing demonstrations, The Friends of Hurst Castle, The Association of Lighthouse Keepers and Milford on Sea Historical Record Society. Thanks also go to Bird Aware Solent, New Forest National Park Authority, Environment Agency, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Trust and Wings Wildlife Heritage.

Elsewhere at Hurst, the castle’s interpretation has received a complete re-fresh with new, informative panels around the site which tell the story of the castle’s history – from its Tudor beginnings to its 19th and 20th century strengthening – as well as covering the castle’s challenging geography.

The castle is currently open 10am-5.30pm, 7-days-a-week until the Sunday 3rd November 2024.

The Lazy Lion closes with future in doubt

Locals were shocked to see a sign on the door of the popular village centre pub, The Lazy Lion in Milford on Sea high street, on Monday 22nd September 2024.

The typed sign simply read:
----------------------------------------
It is with a heavy heart and great sadness that we are having to close the business.

These have been extremely trying and difficult times to be trading in, But spiralling costs, staff shortages economic down-turn and inflation have made it incredibly challenging for hospitality.

We will be closed from Monday 23rd of September to assess our options.

We would like to thank everyone for their support over the last 5 years.

Iain x
The Lazy Lion
----------------------------------------

The closure was unexpected, and whilst it is known that the pub trade has been suffering nationwide, The Lazy Lion seemed to be ok on the surface. But sadly, and obviously not.

It would be great to see Iain and his team return, but at this time the future of The Lazy Lion remains uncertain.

Thanks to a local group called ‘The Customers of the Red Lion’, who in October 2015 won approval for the property to be listed as an approved Asset of Community Value with the New Forest District Council, the now Lazy Lion should remain as a pub and should not be under threat for development.

Our best wishes go to Iain, his family, and his team for whatever the future holds. Hopefully there is a good outcome for everyone.

About Iain's Time at The Lazy Lion

The original Red Lion was situated on the Lymington Road in Milford on Sea. That pub was demolished in 1787, and shortly afterwards re-opened on its present site in Milford on Sea high street.

Red Lion rebranding
to The Lazy Lion in 2019
In 2019, Iain Robertson became the landlord of what was The Red Lion, and he renamed and rebranded the pub to The Lazy Lion.

He also carried out significant refurbishing and remodelling to the historic building.

Iain had previously, and successfully, run The Monkey House in Lymington.

When re-opening following refurbishment, The Lazy Lion then featured a large bar, an original central open fireplace, many period features, a large garden with outside seating, a gazebo, and a children's play area. The Lazy Lion also had four comfortable double Bed & Breakfast Rooms.

Quality home-cooked food was served for breakfast, lunch, and evening meals. They also held a weekly Pie & Pudding Night.

The dog friendly pub also had a Private Dining Area for up to 20 people.

Iain was a firm supporter of a number of charities and held regular fundraising events in The Lazy Lion, such as Quiz Nights and Charity Dinner Evenings, in aid of charities like The Movember Foundation and The Burnt Chef Project.

In February 2024,
The Lazy Lion were presented with a Certificate of Achievement for their High Quality Food by the prestigious Harden's Guide.

In July 2024, Iain took on the Tour de France Stage Challenge, tackling a gruelling mountain stage in aid of MacMillan Cancer Support.

Iain and his team worked so hard to provide a service which was much appreciated by locals and visitors alike, it was a sad day to see the doors close on this popular village centre pub.

We have a New World Champion in the village

Milford on Sea rower, 17 year old Sol Chamberlain-Hyde, along with his rowing doubles partner Leah Saunders, powered their way to winning gols at the World Rowing Beach Sprints Finals Championships in Genoa, Italy on the 15th September 2024.

In an intense side by side gold-medal race against Australia, Sol sprinted up the beach to the finishing buzzer after a strong row together with Leah in the final of the U19 mixed double sculls race. There was only a half a second nail-biting difference determining gold and silver place.

Sol, from Milford on Sea and Leah, 18 from Evesham, had placed themselves in a strong position in the knock-out round after coming second overall in the time trials of the 22 nations in their junior category.

Consequently their knock-out race against Peru was won quite comfortably with a strong lead of 19 seconds for the GB crew.

Their quarter final race against Turkey was a further strong success, as was their semi-final challenge with Spain; they themselves proving to be a formidable beach sprint rowing nation.

The biggest competition however was found within the A Final against Australia.

Destined to always be a very close match judging by their previous times set, this was a neck and neck race from beginning to end. Great starts from both teams in choppy conditions, but after a tight buoy turn and expert navigating by Sol in the bow seat, the GB scullers flew in to the beach with a slight edge over their Australian counterparts Forbes and Thomas. Renowned for his lightning sprinting as well as his strong coastal rowing, Sol powered up the beach, launching himself on the buzzer just ahead of Samuel Forbes, to claim the World Championship title.

Supported by fellow Team GB rowers including Charles Cousins (2012 Olympics and Gold Medal winner in the coxed mixed quad) and local Christchurch rower Clare Jamison (silver in the women’s single), Sol, who is the youngest member of the GB Beach Sprints Rowing Team, was clearly ecstatic about his and Leah’s World Championship Gold; “You don’t want to get too optimistic, but deep down we knew we had it in us. We’re thrilled!” he said.

Beach Sprints is a new format of rowing; a power endurance event which requires immense agility both physically and mentally over a short sharp course where anything can happen. Director of Performance for GB Rowing, Louise Kingsley said, “The conditions here across the weekend have been challenging for all crews racing, so it’s impressive to see our athletes coming home with three golds and a silver and Team GB placing second on the medals table overall. With Beach Sprints on the schedule for the LA 2028 Olympic Games, the competition was tough, with athletes from a good mix of Olympic, classic and coastal backgrounds. This event is only going to get tougher and the quality improve as we move through the LA cycle – it’s going to be exciting to see how it evolves!”

Sol made his presence known early on in this year’s Beach Sprints season, winning the U19 English Beach Sprints Championships, jointly winning the Four Nations Championships, and Silver Medallist at the U19 Welsh Championships in Colwyn Bay in August. Additionally, Sol and Leah just missed out on the Bronze medal in the junior mixed double sculls and placed a very credible fourth place position in the European Championships in Poland in June 2024.

A proud member of Lymington Amateur Rowing Club for many years under the excellent captaincy of Hugo Mills, Sol has been training hard throughout the summer with Leah at the British Rowing Coastal Academy based in Studland, under the expert supervision of British Rowing coach, Lucy Hart.

In order to facilitate his GB journey, Sol is looking for sponsorship, as whilst British Rowing support him entirely with coaching, Sol supplies his own blades and has to pay fully for his international trips in order to race and represent Great Britain. In addition to his ‘A’ Levels and working as much as he can at Lymington Sea Water Baths and Solent Rib Charters throughout the summer, training six days a week has meant his time and finances are stretched to the maximum.

Should you wish to make a donation to help support Sol, be it small or large, from an individual or indeed sponsorship from a company, please click here.

Your local Community First Responder (CFR), John Blessing is giving another free talk and demonstration on how to use a defibrillator, and how to perform CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation).
