Learn about Lasting Powers of Attorney

Commencing this September, Tony, a semi-retired local professional who runs LPA's For Locals, will be offering a weekly drop-in, information and advice service for local residents at The Bridge.

The idea is simply to make Lasting Powers of Attorney more easily understood, more accessible and more affordable to local people.

He will explain the importance for us all of having LPA’s in place, how they work, the choices available, why it's never too early and the implications for all involved if we don't have them or simply leave it too late.

There are two types of LPA. One for Financial decisions (includes property) and one for Health and Care decisions.  Both are equally important as we focus on living life for today, but with an eye on making tomorrow easier for everyone in our family or friendship circle should difficulties arise.

The LPA free drop-in advice sessions will take place at The Bridge every Monday from 10.30am to 12 noon, starting from Monday 2nd September 2024.

If you would like any free information or guidance in the meantime, please contact Tony below.

Recycle Unwanted Items in the village to be Re-Used or Re-Loved

An innovative and practical Facebook Page has been set up by local resident, Becky Maynard with the aim to for local people to give away anything that they no longer need, but it is something that could be of use to anyone else.

Items could be as small as leftover paint, to large furniture, in fact anything that could be of use to someone else. It is important that everything is free and that no money changes hands.

Over 200 villagers have already joined the group and it seems a brilliant way to reduce waste and to do a fellow resident a favour.

To visit the page, please click here.

The C.R.A.P. Milford-on-Sea Facebook page describes itself as:

Conserving Resources Associating People! This page is to help the local community share, someone out there wants to use your left over tile adhesive, has a use for a dozen bricks, has that obscure old electrical cable which you need, has half a bag of dog food that their hound is not getting on with, or will plant flowers in your trashed wellies. Share it, don't hoard it.

Do consider the local charity shops first if you have good quality clothes or household items. Please start a post with Wanted or Offered and remember that it is a free site, no monetary or other exchanges please.

Temporary closure of Set of Steps at Milford on Sea Beach

A set of steps to Milford on Sea Beach have been temporarily closed due to erosion.

The concrete steps near to the Hurst Road Car Park Toilet Block, at the western end of the beach, have been cordoned off by New Forest District Council on safety grounds.

The A&T reported that a council spokesperson said: “Recent erosion has resulted in a large drop-off at the base, and the steps are not safe for use. Alternative steps on to the beach are available to the east. We apologise for the inconvenience this may cause.”

---------------------
About the Gullwing Toilet Block

The Gullwing Toilet Block is situated in Hurst Road Car Park near Milford on Sea Beach. The building was constructed in 2005 having been designed by John Pardey Architects.

This innovative building was the third of the loos on the site. The challenging exposed location faces the promenade and the sea, and the design had to address its unique seafront position.

The entrance doors to the toilets open from the seafront. As the front is exposed to rain and prevailing winds, sometimes up to 100-mile an hour, a covered entrance portico and protective wall was included. The wall is faced in blue-green slate. The area to the front of the wall has public benches, so users can sit and enjoy the views across the sea to the Isle of Wight and the Needles.

The gullwing roof is made from distinctive aluminium and has a 3m cantilever. Polycarbonate was used on the section beneath the roof to allow in obscured natural light. Glass was not used in this area as it would have been at risk from the frequent high winds that fling up pebbles from the nearby beach.

Vandal-proof uplighters are integrated into the floor, and this was the first public loo where covered lighting was introduced to each cubicle.

Saturday Pop Up Music Event on the Village Green

An enthusiastic local crowd recently gathered to enjoy free live music on Milford on Sea Village Green on Saturday 13th July 2024.

The event happened thanks to chance conversation in The Coastal Bakery between Tori Hishon, bakery owner, Amanda Maidment, and Steve Dyer from local band Clockwork Carousel.

They had been chatting about it being a shame that there was to be no Milford on Sea Music Festival until 2025, and then they came up with the idea to arrange an impromptu Pop Up Music Event.

Steve was very enthusiastic, and offered for his band to play, and he even volunteered his dad Pete Dyer with his band, Dog Ruff to also play.

The Parish Council very kindly said they could plug into the electricity, and they spread the word through customers at The Coastal Bakery.

On the afternoon, they were also joined by singer, Sophia Handscomb, and singer/guitarist Traci Kennedy, both playing acoustic sets.

At the very last minute, Alex from the Butcher's on the Green decided to provide burgers and hot dogs, which sold out pretty quickly.

People of all ages came along, including many families with the children able to play safely.

Completely understandably, it was felt best to not publicise on social media for fear of overloading the green for an informal event.

Tori said, "It was so lovely to see so many happy, local faces dancing away under a sunny sky".

Thanks go to Naomi & Sean for loaning their gazebo, Keith and his gang for clearing away the rubbish this morning, and of course The Parish Council for allowing use of the village green.

Bring Your Dogs to join in a Royal Dog Hunt at Hurst Castle

Hurst Castle is hosting its very own take on the famous children’s book ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’ by running a ‘We’re going on a 'Royal Dog Hunt’ this summer, where visitors need to find Henry VIII’s naughty dogs, who had a habit of running away along with other Royal dogs.

The ‘hunt’ will run throughout the holidays until Sunday 1st September 2024. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own dogs to enjoy the dog hunt and all furry visitors will be given a treat once they complete it.

As part of the hunt, visitors will also be given the challenge to find out the name of Charles I’s dog, who it is believed spent time with him at Hurst Castle before his execution.

Jason Crane, owner of Hurst Marine who manages Hurst Castle on behalf of English Heritage said: “Who doesn’t love dogs so this activity is going to be hugely popular this summer. Families are going to love finding out fun facts about royal dogs, while also doing this with their own furry friend.”

There is also a host of other activities happening at Hurst Castle this summer, including Tudor Tuesdays, where visitors can enjoy Tudor themed activities; Wildlife Wednesdays, giving information on wildlife found on Hurst Spit and Fun Fridays, including dressing up, outdoor toys and face painting.
