No need to book, simply, go along to enjoy an evening of singing, playing or listening to singers and musicians.

At the same time enjoy a beer, glass of wine, your favourite tipple, or a meal from the extensive menu using the best British seasonal produce.

History of The Gun Inn

We think there has been a dwelling on the site of the Gun Inn since the 1600’s, but the earliest tangible reference is from the Churchwardens accounts of 1783 when it is referred to as ‘The House at the sign of the Gun’. By 1790 it is simply named ‘The Gun’. Various other sources mention ‘The Pot House’ or ‘Ale House’, so we have assumed that rate payers at this property were in fact ‘Landlords’.

We have found reference to 27 landlords since 1783. Two were drowned at Keyhaven, five were named George, two were women and most served for two to three years. The longest serving was Arthur Payne (pictured below) from 1871 until his death in 1909, some 38 years. The most recent tenants, Paul and Jacquie Hill, come in a close second at 33 years service.

Due to his fame in the world of Wild Fowling, it has often been said that ‘The Gun’ was named for Colonel Peter Hawker’s punt gun, but Hawker didn’t make his first visit to Keyhaven until 1814, some 24 years after the first records appear naming the building as ‘The Gun’. We think it is more likely that the sign post for Hurst Castle simply had a gun on it, and that sign stood in front of the building which now carries its name.

Successful First Friday Lunch for School Funds

Milford on Sea Primary School PFA have once again made a great effort to raise funds for Milford on Sea Primary School PFA

On Friday 6th October 2023 the PFA hosted a First Friday Lunch, with mums and families cooking a tasty 2 course meal.

Anyone was welcome to attend to enjoy the lunch for just £8.

The PFA were delighted to announce that they raised a fantastic £504 to support our village primary school.

The organisers send thanks to everybody that attended, The Bridge helpers, parents & all from the PFA who helped prepare & serve the meal. Thanks also go to the parents who donated ingredients & of course, thank you to the fantastic Year 4 schoolchildren who provided some fun entertainment for everybody.

About the PFA

The Parent Friends Association (PFA) are a committee of volunteer parents of children currently at the school.

The PFA is a registered charity working to raise funds for our village school. At the start of each school year, they work with the teachers and pupils to understand what they would like to have at their school, and then embark on a range of fundraising ideas and events to help to provide those little, and not so little, extras that the school budget cannot cover.

About First Friday Lunch

The First Friday Lunch is where The Bridge (Formerly Milford on Sea Community Centre) support other worthy organisations in the village.

Any village charity, or good cause, can apply to host a fundraising First Friday Lunch. The Bridge then provide the main hall and kitchen facilities free of charge for successful applicants to cook and serve their own meal to everyone who comes along.

Everyone is invited and can simply pay on the door. The host then keeps any money raised for their own cause.
