Boots and WI raise over £1000 for Macmillan

Boots, our local pharmacy, joined forces with the Milford on Sea WI on the morning of Friday 22nd September, to hold a Macmillan Cancer Support fundraiser.

Boots Manager, Charlotte Whiteside organised the day, and the WI enthusiastically got involved by donating their legendary home-made cakes and other items to sell. This, together with other donations enabled over £1000 to be raised for the Macmillan charity.

Our village Boots in Milford on Sea High Street are not new to fundraising. In 2021 they memorably held another day in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support, again with WI cakes and a raffle.

There was also a barbershop quartet, and a pharmacist head shaving!

New Shingle to be added to the beach

New Forest District Council (NFDC) have announced that as part of their ongoing coastal maintenance, they are soon starting work at Milford on Sea.

NFDC are going to add 4,500 tonnes of shingle to the beach to improve beach levels and help protect the seawall ahead of the winter. They will also also be repairing three groynes located opposite the Needles Eye Café.

During the works:
  • The western side of Hurst Road East car park will be closed for the duration of the works to allow for delivery lorries.
  • Sections of the beach will be temporarily inaccessible to allow for safe operation of machinery.
  • Supervised control measures and diversions will be in place to allow visitors to safely use the promenade whilst lorries deliver the shingle to the site.
The NFDC coastal team expect the work will take several weeks, depending on tidal and weather conditions.

Update: Work Underway

The first loads of the 4,500 tonnes of shingle arrived on the 25th September and are ready to replenish the beach.

It currently looks like the beach has decided to relocate onto the promenade!

    About Palais des Vaches

The Palais des Vaches is a beautifully renovated art gallery and event venue at the end of a long gravel track. Nestled between the Beaulieu River and The Solent, the drive reveals delightful views.

Just a short distance from the world-famous Exbury Gardens, this carefully designed event venue has three flexible, interconnecting interior spaces which surround a large open courtyard featuring spectacular sculptures. In Summer there is a wild flower meadow overlooking the river.

The gallery space has been lovingly transformed by Exbury Garden’s president Nick de Rothschild, and his wife, Caroline, and hosts exceptional local and award winning national artists with exhibitions on show throughout the year.

Starting with the magnificent milking parlour, affectionately named the ‘Cow Palace’, and built by Nick’s Grandfather, Lionel de Rothschild, a century ago, Nick and Caroline worked with a team of local builders, artisans, and crafts people to restore the buildings to “more than their former glory.”

The walls of the Palais now feature a collection of works by celebrated and lesser-known local artists, sculptors and ceramicists, along with a host of fantastic sculptures both inside and out.
