SCHUBERT
Overture to the Magic Harp
Incidental and Ballet Music from Rosamunde
Symphony No 6 " Little C Major"
Incidental and Ballet Music from Rosamunde
Symphony No 6 " Little C Major"
Glorious music from the young Schubert is featured in this Concert.
His opera "The Magic Harp" , premiered in 1820 at the Theatre of Vienna but was withdrawn after very few performances. Three years later an equally short-lived play called "Rosamunde" (Princess of Cyprus) was introduced at the same theatre.
Schubert wrote the incidental music and Ballet Music. These pieces have remained in the Concert repertoire ever since, long after the demise of the play.
In 1855, twenty four years after Schubert's death the overture was (incorrectly) linked with the Rosamunde incidental music and has sometimes been known as the Rosamunde Overture
Schubert's delightful Symphony No 6, composed in 1818 when Schubert was twenty, has been titled "The Little C Major" to distinguish it from his much larger ninth Symphony.
