Aubrey Farm introduces The Keyhaven Natural Capital Scheme

We have read on the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust website that The Keyhaven Natural Capital Scheme is being delivered on the 605-acre Aubrey Farm in Keyhaven by Kingwell (Aubrey) Ltd.

Once established, the land is to be turned over from farming to nature, to create a 1,000-acre ‘Nature Reserve’ that connects a site of special scientific interest, a ramsar wetlands site, and special conservation areas to the west of the Pennington Marshes.

To form The Keyhaven Natural Capital Scheme, land owners, Kingwell have partnered with New Forest District Council, New Forest National Park Authority and the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust.

The scheme aims to deliver the first Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) and Nitrate Mitigation scheme in the New Forest. It also looks to mitigate water quality impacts from development sites within the New Forest District and National Park areas.

Developers now must ensure wildlife is left in a better state than it was before any development takes place. This requires a 10% improvement or ‘Biodiversity Net Gain’.

With the need for thousands more homes to be built across the UK, The Keyhaven Natural Capital Scheme, has been created to provide 'residential and commercial property developers with nature-based solutions to ensure that there is no nature deficit following their developments'.

----------------------------
Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) Units are a standardized way to measure biodiversity value and calculate the impact of development projects on nature.

The BNG Units are tailored to support developers in the housebuilding and construction sector's demand for offset credits towards Net Zero. BNG Units are registered on the national BNG Register.

Audrey Farm offers: 1199 Habitat BNG Units, 57 Hedgerow BNG Units, and 0.5 River BNG Units.

Nitrate Credits are where developers can purchase nitrate credits to offset the nitrogen they release into the environment. One credit is required to mitigate one kilogram of nitrogen.

Audrey Farm offers: 3,987 Nitrate Credits for £3500 per credit.

----------------------------
If we understand the scheme correctly, it appears that areas of food farming land is to be removed and returned to nature, alongside unfarmed land, to create 'credits' that property developers can buy and use towards Net Zero targets.

----------------------------
Other plans for Aubrey Farm include: Conversion and development of a former cattle barn to provide storage units, conversion of derelict farm buildings for commercial or leisure use, and in the longer term, wider commercial and residential development opportunities.

Methodist Church awarded Eco Church Bronze Award

Milford on Sea Methodist Church has been awarded an Eco Church Bronze Award from A Rocha UK who are a Christian charity working to protect and restore the natural world and committed to equipping Christians and churches in the UK to care for the environment.

To enable Milford on Sea Methodist Church to gain this award it needed to look at five different areas of church life: Worship and teaching, Buildings and Energy, Land and Nature, Community and Global Engagement and Lifestyle.

Over the last year the church has reviewed current practices, both good and not so good and how these impact on the wider environment. They have then implemented changes where needs be and put in place new practices and ways of supporting both the church community and the wider community. Examples include targeting the reduction of energy use and lowering the churches carbon footprint. Signage which reminds us of the need to save energy such as notices to remind everyone to turn lights off. Setting up a recycling programme and using recycled toilet paper. Taking part in litter picks, support members getting to church and reducing any food waste, no roast potato ever goes to waste at the Methodist Church! Whilst all these things are individually small, when added together they make an impact.

The plans are to continue building on their award into 2025 with a number of projects including organising events for all church members such as a Bird Watching trip, and environmental nature talks. They are also working with a local landscaping company to develop the area at the back of the church and beyond the carpark. The plan is to open up this area, which is currently mainly brambles, to turn it into an area of grass with wild flowers, shrubs, bug houses and bird feeders with a bench where church members can sit, relax and reflect. The hope is that this will all be completed during 2025.

Milford on Sea Methodist Church, meets for worship every Sunday at 10.45am. Whilst they are a small community they are very welcoming. If you would like to join them for worship, please do come along any Sunday at 10.45am.

The church will be holding it Christmas Carol Service on Sunday December 22nd at 10.45am. Everyone welcome.

Wow! Village Generosity Saves Milford on Sea Community Meadow

If you ever wanted an example of true community spirit. this is it!

At the beginning of November, we published an urgent appeal to save Milford on Sea's Community Meadow which was under immediate threat of being lost for ever.

The northern part of old Milford Meadow is adjacent to All Saints churchyard, and had been offered for sale by its owners, The Friends of Christchurch Priory.

Villagers were asked to pledge what they can in order for the Parish Council to buy the land for the community - and they did, in droves!

We were delighted to be told this week that the Parish Council’s bid on behalf of the village to purchase the northern section of the community meadow has been accepted.

The village had pledged an astonishing £114,535.

Pledges came from 140 local people, and the pledge amounts varied from a few pounds, right through to several thousand pounds. All were important in making this purchase possible.

The Parish Council understand that there were four other bids, one of which was close to ours.

Also, it is worth noting that, no tax payers money was used for this purchase, and the land will now be kept as per the wish of the former owner, the late Miss Gillespie.

Once the purchase completes, which is expected to by by the end of January and after all pledges are collected, the Parish Council will then take on the responsibility for the maintenance and enhancement of the area so it can be enjoyed by the whole village.

Congratulations to everyone who generously pledged money, Friends of Milford Meadow, others who campaigned, and to the Parish Council for their efforts in saving this irreplaceable community asset which is enjoyed by so many.

To read details of the original appeal, please click here.

---------------------------------------------------

About Milford Meadow

The Community Meadow, just beside All Saints' Church, was opened by Milford on Sea Parish Council when hosting a village picnic on Saturday 22nd June 2019.

The meadow was bequeathed by the late Diane Gillespie, a generous Milford on Sea resident.

The legacy was in two parcels of land, one made to the Friends of Christchurch Priory, the other to Milford on Sea Parish Council on condition that it should remain an open space to the benefit of the community.

In December 2022 The Friends of Milford Meadow were pleased to report that following significant local objection, a planning application by Bayview Developments to build a four-bedroom house on  the Friends of Christchurch Priory land close to the Community Meadow was refused.

It is understood that over the last two years the Parish Council has had several meetings and communications with the Priory about the future of the Meadow - not least about the unmaintained state of the land.

At a recent meeting, the Friends of the Priory were encouraged to let the Parish Council know what they envisaged for the land and it was emphasised that the Parish would like first refusal on buying the meadow, but would need time to raise the money with community involvement.

Subsequently, we have been informed that the land will be offered by tender via Goadsby Estate Agents in Bournemouth with a guide price of £100,000. The tender period is likely to commence in November 2024.
