Festive Shopping Event and Lots of Sparkling Christmas Decorations

Mark at our local Otter Gardens Centre, has let us know that they are hosting a Festive Shopping Event from 2pm to 5pm on Wednesday 1st November 2023 at Otters, Milford Road, Efford, Lymington, SO41 0JD.

This is the first chance for customers to experience Otter's beautiful Christmas Shop & displays of decorations. 

Enjoy a complimentary complimentary glass of sparkling fizz and a mouth-watering mince pie while you shop.

There will also be live Christmas music to enjoy from local Village Voices Choir singing Christmas songs, and some of their other favourites, to put you in a festive mood while you look around. 

Take your family, friends and kids for an afternoon filled with shopping, entertainment, and fun.

Free Lipreading Taster Session

Milford on Sea Lipreading Community Group (MoSLCG) are holding a Free Lipreading Taster Session from 9am to 10.30am on Friday 10th November 2023 in All Saints' Church Hall. Everyone is welcome to attend.

The taster session gives a flavour of the village's weekly Lipreading Classes, which provide 'The gateway to life after hearing loss'. 

This session is designed for people to learn, and laugh, with others who are are in the same boat.

Friday Lipreading Sessions having been running in Milford since Spring 2018 and there are now three classes: 
  • Beginners Class: 9am to 10.30am.
  • Improvers Classes: 11am to 12.30pm and 1pm to 2.30pm.
There is no fixed fee, attendees can put a donation in a box according to what they can afford or wish to pay.

Sessions are lively occasions with the motto “No one can fail a Lip Reading course”.

The Lip Reading Course is designed to help the 1 in 6 who suffer from hearing loss. Joining a class is a significant step towards enhancing life with hearing loss and is very entertaining.

This course is highly recommended for those living with hearing loss, and it is also helpful for couples to learn together.

There are spaces in the Beginners’ Class, so do go along to the the taster session if you feel it would be of benefit.

About Milford on Sea Lipreading Community Group (MoSLCG) 

This Community Group was established to enable people who have needs, but fewer means, to attend Lipreading Classes. 

The group aims to be inclusive, and organise Lipreading Classes every week where people who attend simply put a donation in a box according to what they can afford or wish to pay.

The classes are partly sponsored by the National Lottery Community Fund.

The benefits of lipreading, also known as speechreading, is being able to recognise a person's lip shapes, how they use their teeth and tongue, as well as understanding their gestures and facial expressions when speaking. This helps to understand what's being said. Lipreading enables people with hearing loss to be more involved in conversation.

Also in the village, Nancy Weatherson, a Deaf Communications Professional provides Introduction to British Sign Language Courses.

This fun and informal course is ideal for individuals, businesses, groups or organisations.

British Sign Language helps deaf people, or those with hearing impairment, communicate with their silent world, and you can learn more about this amazing language here in Milford on Sea.

Just imagine the smiles if you could communicate with any deaf, or hearing impaired, people you meet.

40% of Village Pantomime Tickets sold on first day

The Bridge Box Office was inundated when the tickets for the Village Pantomime went on sale on Monday 23rd October 2023, with 40% of the event tickets being sold on first day.

If you are planning on going, it might be advisable to get some tickets quick!

Watch the Rugby World Cup Final at the Lazy Lion

The Rugby World Cup final takes place at 8pm on Saturday 28th October 2023, between New Zealand and South Africa.

Local Car Park Prices rising

At a meeting of the New Forest District Council on Monday 9th October 2023 it was agreed that car parking charges were to increase from January 2024.

Town and village car park charges will remain at £1 for the first hour, however, other tariffs will rise by £1.

Coastal car parks will have new tariffs. Short stay annual clocks will increase from £30 a year to £40.

New Parking Charges from January 2023:

  • Long stay annual clocks - £140 to £220
  • Long stay quarterly clocks - £40 to £65

Payment:

RingGo is a mobile phone service that lets you pay for your parking with a credit or debit card. It is a good alternative to using cash at a ticket machine.

Users of the service will pay a small convenience charge to RingGo. Currently this is 20p per parking session.

Terrarium Workshop at Everton Nurseries

Everton Nurseries are hosting two Terrarium Workshops on Friday 3rd November at 2.30pm and 4pm.

Plant Physiologist, Manos Kanellos will give you a masterclass on terrarium building. This event includes:
  • A short talk on making stunning and stylish indoor gardens.
  • Help to create your own piece of horticultural art to take home.
You will be able to get creative in a casual environment and make your own unique desert terrarium.

Free tea, coffee or soft drink and cake will be provided.

Coffee, Cake & Christmas at Milford Baptist Church

Milford on Sea Baptist Church are holding a Coffee, Cake & Christmas event from 9.30am to 12.30pm on Saturday 28th October 2023, and everyone is welcome to go along.

Enjoy a coffee morning with a difference, where you can nibble a cake or two at the Cake Stall. At the same time, you can relax over a coffee and chat.

Then you can rummage around a Bookstall with Christmas cards, calendars and gifts.

There will also be a New and Nearly New stall to find some bargains.

There is limited parking behind the church, for when you arrive.

The good folk at the church would be delighted to see you.

Floral Art Club Meeting in November

The next Meeting of Milford Floral Art Club Meeting will be at 2pm on Thursday 9th November 2023 in All Saints' Church Hall.

The afternoon will feature a Demonstration by Andrea Hillyard with the theme: 'You are my sunshine'.

Doors open at 1.30pm. There are also refreshments, floral sundries for sale and a raffle. 

Visitors are welcome for £10 on the door.

Milford Floral Art Club are a thriving, active and sociable floral art club who were founded in Milford on Sea in June 1983, and they have members of all age groups and backgrounds.

Demonstrations from professional NAFAS demonstrators or workshops lead by fellow flower enthusiasts, floral sundries for sale, refreshments, raffles and more. 

Everyone is welcome to come and join them for a fun filled afternoon with fellow flower lovers.

It’s time to muster your courage and join us for all things Halloween at Hurst Castle this October half term.

This fearsome fortress was prison to two unfortunates who were kept within its bleak walls – are you brave enough to descend deep into our basement to solve the clues and escape from our Prisoner of the Castle Ghost Maze!

Or roam through every corner of the castle to find the clues to solve our Treasure Trail then you can sit back and get creative with our arts & crafts designed to keep little ones busy.

With so much to see, do and explore make sure you join us for Halloween and follow in the footsteps of the castle’s prisoners!

All activities are included in your castle admission.  

Ferries depart Keyhaven at 10am then approximately every 20-30 minutes.

The Village Pumpkin Hunt

New Space needed by New Forest For Ukraine

Local charity, New Forest For Ukraine (NFFU) urgently need new space for their operations.

For over a year NFFU have been helping others. Now they need help to find new premises to operate a new sorting hub.

The ideal site would be:

• As close to Ampress Estate, Lymington as possible
• A minimum of 200 sqm
• Access for Donation Drop Offs
• Access for Loading Articulated Trucks
• Parking space for volunteer cars
• Rental below £1250 per month

• Available by 1st November 2023

The NFFU Team are naturally keen to continue working to get aid to the needy as they prepare for the dark and cold of a Ukrainian winter war.

The Wash House in Milford on Sea have once again been listed in The Good Beer Guide for 2024, published by CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale).

The Wash House loves great beer, and stocking ales from talented local brewers. There are also, ciders, gins, wines and a great choice of organic soft drinks.

An Evening with Susanna Crociani Wine Dinner

Ray's Italian Kitchen are hosting 'An Evening with Susanna Crociani Wine Dinner' on Wednesday 1st November for 7pm.

Susanna is from ‘Cantina Crociani’, and her family produce wine from the Vina Nobile area. Her Nobile is aged in 13th Century cellars in the heart of Montepulciano (Siena).

In the words of Susanna her wines travel the world, they arrive on tables as a result of a labour of love and determination. They have history full of vines, many paths and many stories but the dominant component without a doubt is love.
