Discovering the Tony Locke Orchard

Did you know that in 2013 work commenced on creating a Community Orchard in Milford on Sea?, and that in 2022 the orchard was renamed to the Tony Locke Orchard.

The orchard was created for local people to enjoy and benefit from, and to provide a habitat for insects, such as bumblebees and butterflies.

As most of the trees have only been planted in the last few years, there are only a couple of mature trees that produce apples. However, in coming years it is hoped the fruit crop will grow substantially and then the Parish Council will then decide how to distribute them fairly.

The Orchard is accessed from the entrance to Studland Common Nature Reserve from junction of Pless Road and Westminster Road, Milford on Sea, SO41 0WT

If you decide to visit the orchard, please be mindful that it sits at the bottom of people’s gardens.

-------------------------

About the Tony Lock Orchard

Work on the Milford on Sea Community Orchard began in 2013, after the Parish Council was able to recover old garden extensions from a number of homes in Pless Road.

The orchard was first planted in 2014 and has about 35 to 40 fruit trees and shrubs. Varieties include apple, crab apple, damson, pear, plum, cherry and blackberry. It is also an ideal area for bumblebees and butterflies. The Orchard is on occasions, partially grazed by friendly Dexter cattle with a little extra help from flailing and mowing.

Since 2016 regular surveys have recorded 27 different species of butterfly in the orchard and neighbouring common, including the beautiful Marbled White variety as well as Gamekeepers and Holly Blue’s.

Tony Locke
Tony Locke was local passionate environmentalist who dedicated his time to conservation work at the orchard, Studland Common, Sturt Pond and the Pleasure Grounds. He was also the longstanding chair of Milford Conservation Volunteers.

In 2020 Tony and fellow MCV members were honoured to receive the country’s highest accolade for a voluntary group, the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, equivalent to an MBE.

Sadly, Tony passed away at the age of 79 in 2021.

In 2022, the Parish Council decided it would be a fitting tribute to rename the orchard to the Tony Lock Orchard in his honour.

His longstanding friend and MCV conservation officer Keith Metcalf recalled: “Tony was a lovely man who cared about the conservation and wildlife very much. This is a place he loved so it’s a lovely way to remember him and all that he did.”

“Under Tony’s direction, MCV secured parish council support for many local conservation projects including the Studland Common grazing scheme, successive Pleasure Grounds woodland management plans, the Sturt Pond bird hide, the development of Old Milford Meadow, Studland Community Orchard, the Pans wetland bird observatory and more recently the Rowan Tree Copse and Wildflower Meadow in Swallow Drive.

The parish council have also installed a new bench and planted a fruit tree as a further memorial to Tony.

New Beginnings Art Exhibition by Annie Sofiano

Strawberry Gallery are hosting the New Beginnings Art Exhibition by Annie Sofiano on Saturday 2nd & Sunday 3rd September 2023 - 10am to 5pm.

Annie's abstract art on canvas and fabric cushions will be on display to buy, or simply visit to enjoy.

About Annie Sofiano in her own words:

As a mature student studying for my BA Art History degree, I rediscovered the New York Abstract Expressionist movement and I was hooked!

I relate to the vibrancy, the innovative approach and the ground-breaking works of these artists.

These works have influenced my style of painting – colourful splashes that have many interpretations – for me they convey joy, lightness and hope – energies that may be experienced by the viewer.

My background is in interior design, working with beautiful fabrics and creating exciting colour schemes for clients.

In complete contrast my partner and I moved to Mallorca to start a small country house Bed and Breakfast. While caring for the needs of happy holiday makers I still found time to paint, gaining inspiration from the light and beauty of the Mallorca countryside and coast. The hotel also gave me the opportunity to showcase my work and the guests loved it!

We had a great time there, but after 18 years we felt it was time to return to the UK and settled in Hordle, near Milford on Sea in 2021.

As well as painting canvases, I also designed and painted the scenery for the Village Pantomime in 2023 and I am looking forward to doing next years' scenery backdrops.

At last I feel that I have the time to devote to my art, exploring and developing new ideas.

I am happy to accept commissions. Just give me an idea of colours and we can go from there.

New Signage in Saltgrass Lane

An eagle-eyed reader has sent the photo below, showing metal poles that have recently appeared along the roadside edge of Saltgrass Lane in Milford on Sea, near Hurst Spit.

As this lane is frequently used by camper vans, and often for overnight stays during good weather months, it is likely the posts will be receiving some parking restrictions signs in the not too distant future.

This could of course be an incorrect assumption, and the signs may read; 'Beware of the Ducks', or perhaps; 'No Naked Bathing!'.

No doubt we will know soon.

Newlands Manor restored to former glory

A recent article in the Daily Mail has reported that an impressive semi-detached section of the Grade II listed Newlands Manor is for sale for a princely sum of £3m.

The article explains that Newlands Manor, which until recently had been private flats, has now been fully restored to its former glory.

The grand gothic manor house was once the home of William Cornwallis-West and his flamboyant wife Patsy, who had been a mistress of Edward VII when he was Prince of Wales. They were known to have hosted lavish parties attended by Kaiser Wilhelm II and many other members of the aristocracy during 19th century.

The property was built in the early 1800's for Admiral William Cornwallis, naval captain and friend of Lord Nelson. The manor house is constructed in the Strawberry Hill Gothic architecture style, with buttresses and a castellated parapet.

The semi-detached house has over 8,400sq.ft of accommodation over three floors, which has sumptuous rooms; including a large kitchen/dining room, library, drawing room, dining room, cinema room, games room, eight bedrooms and five bathrooms.

The property is in the village of Everton, close to Milford on Sea. The house sits at the end of a a long driveway with an ornamental water fountain, and set in an estate of 3.5 acres with private gardens, a swimming pool, an ornamental lake, surrounded by woodland and parkland.

Few that saw it, will ever forget the stunning and highly emotional dance by Rose Ayling-Ellis, as she perfectly danced in silence on Strictly Come Dancing.

Rose is a big supporter of British Sign Language. She has been deaf since birth and uses BSL herself to communicate with the world.

She & Giovanni became Strictly Come Dancing Champions in 2021, during which they performed 'Silent Symphony', without doubt, the best ever dance on this long-running and much loved show.

Free Sign Language Open Day

Friday 8th September from 2pm to 7pm at The Bridge

It is likely that we all know someone who struggles with their hearing. A visit to the open day would give you valuable tips on the best way to communicate with them.

Everyone is welcome to pop in to this informal afternoon, whether as an individual, business or organisation.

Just imagine the smiles if you could communicate better with any deaf people you know or meet.

------------------------------------------

Deaf Awareness Course: Introduction to British Sign Language

For those that might be interested, after the Open Day, it is planned to hold an Introduction to British Sign Language Course in the village later this year.

This course will be ideal for individuals, businesses, groups or organisations.

The aim is for you to be able to communicate with deaf people, and this valuable and caring skill can enhance the lives of those you meet who are unable to hear the world around us.

We are fortunate to have Nancy Weatherson running the course, she is a qualified Deaf Communications Professional living in Milford on Sea, and she supports deaf and hard of hearing people throughout the UK.

In 2022 the BSL Act was passed, meaning that British Sign Language has now been recognised as a language of England, Wales and Scotland in its own right. This is a wonderful success for the deaf community.

Nancy works closely with Deaf Professionals and together they have created a Deaf Awareness Course designed to introduce some useful communication tactics to you as an individual, or your group.

If this is something that you believe that you will benefit from and enjoy, now is your chance to learn something new that will really make a difference.

If you are interested in finding out more about the Open Day, or the Deaf Awareness Course, please contact Nancy at: nancy@feelhear.co.uk. There is no obligation if you register your interest.

-----------------------------------------------------
