Tricky Problem for the Milford on Sea Music Festival

1st July 2023: UPDATE to original article below: The Milford on Sea Music Festival organisers have had confirmation from the Highways Department at Hampshire County Council that the 8ft post that would be obstructing the main stage will be removed by 19th July.

Thanks go to everyone who helped out by contacting HCC, and to the council themselves for taking action to resolve the issue. Now, everyone can have a great music festival in just a few weeks' time.

-------------------------------

The Milford on Sea Music Festival has run into a tricky, and potentially significant problem, - and as yet, Hampshire County Council are not helping them to resolve it. Hopefully, they will when they understand the full issue.

Since our last music festival, Hampshire County Council appear to have installed an 8ft metal post with a parking information sign at the foot of Milford on Sea village green. This is now situated just where the main stage for the Milford Music Festival is planned to be.

When Paul White, one of the organisers of the Milford Music Festival realised the issue, he contacted Hampshire County Council to ask if it could be replaced with a removable post.

He also pointed out that the bollards in front of the parking spaces in the same area, are removable once the padlocks are unsecured. It is assumed that when the bollards were installed someone considered that the music festival takes place annually, and that this is the location where the main stage has been positioned for many years!

Sadly, as you will see from the councils first response below, the answer he got was not helpful and somewhat brief.

To: Paul White,

I am writing in relation to your enquiry requesting a parking sign be moved from High Street, Milford-on-Sea.

Our Assistant Highways Engineer has advised regretfully that we cannot remove permanently installed signs.

Thank you for your enquiry.

Hopefully, whoever responded from Hampshire County Council has misunderstood the request, as it is not intended for the sign to be removed permanently.

It is also likely that the respondent is unaware of the significance and size of our Music Festival, and its importance in the village and surrounding areas. Surely, once the issue is clearly understood a resolution can be found?

As soon as she was aware of the issue, Cllr Fran Carpenter, our Hampshire County Councillor, was on the case, and she is looking in to what she can do to help.

I expect that our Parish Council are also doing the same.

We all know that the Milford on Sea Music Festival is the largest event our village holds, and many people are excited for the fun to come. That might be thwarted somewhat if there is an 8ft pole in the way!

Hampshire County Council have a webpage where messages can be sent to the Transport and Roads Team (Who I assume would look after the road furniture). It might be helpful if polite messages were sent explaining why a solution is so important for the Milford Music Festival. To visit the council comments page, please click here

I am sure the people at Hampshire County Council love music as much as we do, and I remain hopeful that our next update on this problem will be to say that the council have helped and resolved the issue.

The music festival takes place on the village green from Friday 21st to Sunday 23rd July 2023, and all is being done to try to get Hampshire County Council to help resolve the issue by then.

Watch this space.

The Official Opening & History of Milford on Sea Bowls Club

Opening Ceremony photo

On 21st June 1933 the Mayor of Lymington bowled a silver jack down the newly-created green on Milford seafront, and Milford on Sea Bowls Club was born.

Dress code was very formal, with men in suits, gaiters and trilby hats, and ladies wearing long dresses and bonnets. The first Club President was Lt Col. W Clemson DSO.

Since that day, the Club has operated continually, save a “Wednesday afternoon only” rule during the Second World War for safety reasons. Initially the Club membership was “Men only” – supported by a few partners who came along to help with teas. This gradually changed during the War years when ladies became regular players on the green. Three beach huts provided changing rooms and storage for grass cutting equipment.

In 1947 Milford Bowls Club was one of the founder members of the New Forest Bowling Association. In 1987 the current pavilion building was built.

On 21st June 2023, the Club celebrated its ninetieth anniversary, and Paul Ware-Lane, the current Club President, led a reception for local dignitaries, bowls association representatives and local businesses, who provide much-valued support to the Club. This was followed by invitation matches with Brockenhurst, Highcliffe, Lymington and New Milton Bowls Clubs. During the late afternoon members played a fun bowls match and enjoyed a meal afterwards in a temporary marquee arranged for the extra celebration activities.

On Sunday 25th June the Club hosted Clevedon Promenade Bowls Club who are also celebrating their ninetieth anniversary this year. A “friendly” bowls match was played, followed by a BBQ for players of both teams.

Three-piece suit, gaiters and leather shoes - the player's kit has changed quite a bit since 1933!

In a Tudor court of scheming courtiers, religious fervour and feuding families all are fighting for the King’s favour in a deadly battle of destinies and dynasties.

Milford on Sea named in Most Expensive Seaside Locations

HampshireLive News have reported that data from Rightmove has revealed that two New Forest villages have been named among most expensive seaside locations for house buyers. One of these villages being Milford on Sea.

The top five most expensive seaside locations in the UK based on average 2023 house asking prices are: Sandbanks, Poole, Dorset: £2,028,948 - Canford Cliffs, Poole, Dorset: £1,219,804 - Milford on Sea, Hampshire: £764,859, Barton On Sea, Hampshire: £617,793 and Padstow, Cornwall: £616,578.

It comes are little surprise that many people would wish to live in this delightful village situated in this glorious part of the world. However, this does have a downside, as the property prices are out of reach for many of our young families and people.

I realised that, when younger we may have had to move away from the area of our family home to get our first property (as I did). But, it just feels that the affordability gap is now wider then ever, and with soaring interest rates, the limited property opportunities for young people is now is sad to see.
