Noel's 8700 mile challenge

The Advertiser & Times carried an article this week telling the story of Noel Osborne, a retired pilot from Milford on Sea who completed a charity ride of 8,726 miles, covering a minimum of 120 miles a week.

Noel's challenge was inspired by the care his daughter Jo Rivron and granddaughter Matilda who have received as they battle different types of cancer.

He began cycling every day during lockdown and set himself the challenge of completing the distance between his Milford on Sea home and Trinidad, where his parents were born, before 21st June.

He completed the final stretch with daughter Nicky before being joined by Jo’s husband Christian and granddaughters Matilda and Amelie to cross the finish line.

His cycling challenge has raised more than £18,000 for charities including Oakhaven Hospice.

The Needles Trophy Winners 2021

Milford on Sea Bowls Club get a full turn out for The Needles Trophy Competition.

On Friday 2nd July Milford on Sea Bowls Club celebrated the return of a favourite sponsored competition at the club – The Needles Trophy. This year the competition has been kindly sponsored by Tim and Nicki from the South Lawn Hotel.

This is a one day, 4 woods, open pairs competition, comprising of a 3-match “round robin” first round, followed by semi-finals and finals. With a full complement of 16 pairs, the competition ran over six hours.

The pleasant weather was an added bonus and it was good to welcome some of our more isolated members enjoying the day as spectators. The newly installed bar facility was well received.

The finalists were Mike Rowe and Alan Burn playing against Tony Styles and Richard Harris. Tony and Richard had an exceptional run and were the eventual winners.

Tim and Nicki from South Lawn Hotel were able to join the club members during the afternoon and presented both the winners and the runners up with their trophies.

South Lawn returns to core business

As they say; 'All good things come to an end', and South Lawn have done a magnificent job in supporting the Milford on Sea community throughout the pandemic.

As South Lawn owner, Tim explains, it is now time for South Lawn to finish their delivery service in order to return the focus to their core business:

"After 15 months of delivering Bakery, Dairy and Meals to the village and surrounding areas it was with a heavy heart that we made the decision a couple of weeks ago that yesterday, Sunday 27th June was to be our last day.

Having delivered over 26,000 meals into the community you can imagine that we have made some very good friends. The last week has been emotional to say the least as we have delivered for the last time to many of our regulars and whilst there are many people who are grateful for our service we to have to say a big thank you for supporting the hotel.

Since being permitted to welcome hotel guests and diners inside again and despite still not being able to open our function facilities the hotel is the busiest it has ever been since we arrived back in 2015, forward bookings are also looking very strong. We have also seen many of the people we have been delivering to venture out for meals with us which is great news.

Our focus has to be towards ensuring our hotel and restaurant maintains and improves its enviable reputation. We will be keeping our fingers crossed for the future and look forward to the Autumn through to Christmas period when we see so many friends and families spending time and celebrating with each other.

Thank you for your support over the last 15 months and we hope to see you soon.

From us all at South Lawn."

A quintessentially English village green

Anyone who lives in or visits Milford on Sea knows that it is a special place, and in many way a throwback to time gone by.

This was perfectly captured by Jean Maye, who whilst our walking came across a random group of musicians on Milford on Sea village green who were being enjoyed by people relaxing and a quizzical and attentive dog!

This quintessentially English scene is typical of why we love Milford on Sea.

The Birth of MEG

The Birth of MEG
(The Milford Environment Group)
1991 to 2011

So, what has Michael Fish got to do with the birth of MEG aka the Milford Environment Group?

Therein lays the tale that Keith Metcalf tells in his latest 44 page A4 mini-book on the formation of the group at the end of the 1980s.

He has been helped by the first and last chairpersons of the group; Sandra Ebbetts and Anne Jenks, with a little bit of help also from the former chairman of the Milford-on-Sea Wildlife Recording Group (WRG) Tony Locke.

Keith opens the book by recalling the 15th October 1987 when BBC television weatherman; Michael Fish told the nation that in answer to a woman’s telephone call earlier in the day to the BBC offices, when she asked whether there was a hurricane on the way, unforgettably, Michael Fish said live on TV; “Don’t worry there isn’t”. The rest of course is history with 115mph winds of the Great Storm taking the lives of 18 people across southern England, uprooting an estimated 15 million trees and devastating the Pine Wood at Sharvells Copse.

With the Milford Environment and Wildlife Recording Groups amalgamating in January 2012, Keith recalls the historic records of MEG prior to the two groups joining together. The records have been taken primarily from MEGs minutes, which were recently handed to him by two of its former stalwart chairs; Sandra Ebbetts and Anne Jenks. Keith takes up the story from here.

Having been handed box loads of papers by Sandra and Anne that included minutes, publications, press cuttings, maps, parish council minutes, letters, management plans and many old photographs, I thought that rather than just archive them, I should write a short summary of their content.” Keith goes on to say; “Whilst, these documents will finally be handed over to the Milford-on-Sea Historical Record Society, I thought it unlikely that anyone else would make the records available to a wider local audience, hence this account of how, 30-years ago, MEG came into being and what they did for the environment, the nature reserves, wildlife and the local community, their work of which has since been carried on by the Milford Conservation Volunteers (MCV) since January 2012.

Copies of the book are available directly from Keith by emailing him at keithmetcalf@btinternet.com giving him your postal address and contact details.

This limited edition book will be available from 1st July at £7.50 per copy: Free delivery to any household in Milford-on-Sea or, postage elsewhere, at cost.

Last copies of 'Tales of The Beach House and Beyond'

Some final copies of 'Tales from The Beach House and Beyond' are now available.

The book sold exceptionally well, with less than 20 copies remaining, and the local authors from The Scribe Tribe anticipate a sell out.

Milford on Sea School will benefit by around £550, assuming all remaining books are sold.

The Scribe Tribe have been inundated with positive comments and are delighted that their first venture into publishing has been such a success.

To buy one of the few remaining copies please contact:

ABOUT THE BOOK

A group of local authors have written a book entitled; 'Tales of the Beach House and Beyond'.

The launch took place on the village green on Saturday 29th May between 10.30am to 4pm.

This was the great lockdown project for a writing group from Milford on Sea's U3A, whose nickname is The Scribe Tribe.

The Editor, Anne Kelly says it was her salvation during the long days of the winter lockdown but that it was a group effort with everyone combing their various talents to reach a fantastic result.

She goes on to say that some time ago the group were given access to the Westover Hall archives and these inspired a number of fictional stories, loosely based on fact. (Westover Hall is now The Beach House on the cliff top.)

The book is published with the support of the U3A and all profits will go to Milford on Sea School to purchase books enabling a life long interest in reading.

As well as offering delicious pizza and pasta at Ray's Italian Restaurant, the new on-site Ray's Deli in Milford on Sea high street is now offering a range of eat-in and takeaway sweet & savoury treats.

With the serious effects of the pandemic on the hospitality trade, Stacey has had to amended her offering from a full-time restaurant until things return closer to normal.

Since the first lockdown she has not taken the crisis laying down, and she has created a Delicatessen which is open during the day, plus the restaurant serves early morning coffee and cake from 9am, Brunch from 10am, Lunch from 12noon and the Restaurant & Pizza & Pasta Takeaway is open in the evenings at the weekend. As things improve there are plans for the restaurant to again open weekday evening as well.

If you enjoy a luxury and delicious later breakfast or early lunch, check out Ray's Italian Brunch Menu, or simply pop in for a coffee. Click here to view.

Stacey's latest innovation is a 'Charcuterie & Cheese Platter' and 'Luxury Picnic' Menu. Both are perfect for entertaining, or simply giving yourself a treat!
