Supermoon over The Needles

Local Milford on Sea resident and accomplished photographer, Graham Wiffen is well-know for capturing excellent images of Milford on Sea and the surrounding areas.

At the end of last month Graham caught on camera a spectacular photograph of the evening's Supermoon which is also called the Flower Moon. This is an occasion when a full moon comes closest to the earth in its elliptic orbit, resulting in the moon appearing 30% brighter and 14% bigger than normal.

There are two Supermoons in 2021, and the last Supermoon this year will occur on 24th June and will be a Super Strawberry Moon.

The village defibrillator has been found

Update: 2nd June 2021:

The village defibrillator has been found. The machine was accessed for an emergency but arrived at the scene after the ambulance crew had got there.

In consequence, the machine is understood to have been taken to the hospital with the patient, unused. It then remained on board the ambulance or at its base station. There are now plans to collect it from the Ambulance Station later today and if in good order with pads etc it will be restored to the cabinet for emergency use once again.

-----------------------------------------

Have you seen the village defibrillator?

Last Thursday 27th May around 5.30pm the Southern Central Ambulance Service received a call to request the code to open and remove the defibrillator from its cabinet on the wall of the Coop in the village centre.

Should it have been used in an emergency, we hope whoever needed it is OK. As yet, the user may not had an opportunity to return the defibrillator and efforts are underway to establish its location.

The defibrillator was donated to the village in 2015 by a group of village organisations, including; Milford on Sea Food Week The WI, Parish Council, County Councillor and Milford on Sea Memorial Hospital League of Friends and the Coop kindly gave permission for it to be installed on their side wall.

The Parish council became owners during 2020.

If you know where the defibrillator might be please contact:

Spectacular seafront apartment goes on the market

You may recognise Marine House on Milford on Sea seafront which is home to The Lighthouse café/bar on the ground floor. What you might not know is that on the first floor there is now a luxury home which has recently gone on the market.

We of course do not advertise properties for sale, but when a luxury seafront apartment in a local landmark like this goes on the market we think it is local news!

Marine House is at the beginning of Hurst Spit and has spectacular views of Christchurch Bay, Sturt Pond Nature Reserve, Hurst Castle and the Isle of Wight.

The Marine House apartment has 4 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms and is offered at £895,000. This price is of course out of reach for most pockets, but for the lucky person that can afford the property, the location and outlook is truly spectacular and unique.

Looking to meet new people?

If you would like to meet some new people, or simply new to the village, then a local Meetup Group in Milford on Sea called C.A.F.E. (The Coast and Forest Events group) might interest you.

As their website explains:

This Meetup group is aimed at people who live in or around the southern, coastal part of the New Forest – hence the name. We aim to help each other perk up our social lives, by making the most of the excellent leisure facilities and venues we have here locally, right on our doorsteps! If you are “Mid-Life" (!), and maybe find yourself unexpectedly single, there are times when you probably feel like going out to see a film or play or to a comedy night, for a meal, for a walk, for a drink, or even just for a coffee. There's lots to do, but it's not so much fun on your own! This could be the group for you.

Post up here an event or activity you'd really like to go to, and find out if anyone else would like to go along too! We offer friendship and, mostly-inexpensive, local social activities (pub quizzes, meals, walks, live music, a drink at a country pub on a Sunday evening) - while also keeping an eye out for bigger local events, as well as those in Bournemouth, Southampton and beyond for when we feel like making the extra effort!

People of any age and location are welcome, but please bear in mind that most events may take place within an area roughly Lyndhurst to Lymington, Christchurch to Calshot, or close by, and that activities will be focused on the "mid-life" age range. While most members are single, the group is open to sociable singles and non singles alike, (and especially to those who want to actively contribute events to the group!) So, if you want to meet new people, please join!

CAFE Meetup is exists solely to help its members have Fun! The organisers give their time voluntarily. Group running costs (website, admin etc) have mostly been covered by occasional small profits on events in the past, but an annual fee of £5 is now payable by new and existing members.

You can contact the Organiser, David Hughes via the website link below.

Dogs on Walks
Please note, it is a policy of the group that dogs accompanying walkers must be on short leads at all times, unless express permission has been given by the walk leader that it can be let off, and there is no objection from any other walk participant.

This requirement is to ensure the comfort, convenience and safety of walk participants for whom the walk is primarily intended.

Launch of Tales of the Beach House and Beyond

A group of local authors have written a book entitled; 'Tales of the Beach House and Beyond'.

The launch takes place on the village green on Saturday 29th May between 10.30am to 4pm.

This was the great lockdown project for a writing group from Milford on Sea's U3A, whose nickname is The Scribe Tribe.

The Editor, Anne Kelly says it was her salvation during the long days of the winter lockdown but that it was a group effort with everyone combing their various talents to reach a fantastic result.

She goes on to say that some time ago the group were given access to the Westover Hall archives and these inspired a number of fictional stories, loosely based on fact. (Westover Hall is now The Beach House on the cliff top.)

The book is published with the support of the U3A and all profits will go to Milford on Sea School to purchase books enabling a life long interest in reading.

Co-authors: Sonia Sewell, Anne Kelly, Catriona Coates Brown, June Cooper, Rosemary Marcuse and Cynthia Smith.

Rebrand at Saltwater Café

Saltwater Café in High Street, Milford on Sea have a new shop front and logo design.

The designs were created by Fiona of Kifi Design, a creative design and photography agency based in Milford on Sea. (www.kificreative.co.uk)

Fiona explains on her website how she went about the redesign project:

"I looked at hanging signage to lift the building from the side, and a new logo. I bounced around a few options for shells and colours. Although quite rustic inside, the client didn’t want it to look too beachy as it isn’t next to the beach. We ended up with quite a slick and simple design, incorporating a wonderful shell, in a very simple colour scheme.

The UK is open for business and so is Saltwater!

As soon as we had direction from the the UK government, that the 17th May would be a national opening for cafés and pubs, restaurants and shops, we joined the queue to get things installed.

The external refit, applying the final design, cost under £200.00, and took approximately 30 minutes to install!

My design time was slightly longer, as making these big image decisions always take time to process. We started this project back in February and finally three months later, here we are, project completed.

I used JJB signs to fit the graphics to the window and hang the final hanging sign. Here is his website: www.jjbsigns.com

The client is delighted with the end result and it’s already had such great feedback locally. It always seems like small amounts of design tweaks won’t make a difference, but when you see it all put together, you see how much it does! Here’s to growing businesses and not going back into lockdown again!"

Becca & Tony, owners at Saltwater Café commented; "Fiona (Kifi) was recommended to us by friends who had recently received the Kifi magic! Fiona is fun, creative, friendly and easy to work with.  She listened to what we wanted and she knew what we needed to do to promote our café.  She is full of ideas and is more then happy to help.

All this came together during Covid restrictions which made meeting difficult but we knew we could always ring or email Fiona with ideas and questions. We are over the moon with our new logo, which has also been made into classy window vinyls and a swing sign which hangs outside our café.  Our café now stands out to people passing by.

We’d totally recommend Kifi Creative!!"

Ray's Italian becomes more than a restaurant

Throughout the lockdown, and like many hospitality businesses in the village and across the country, Ray's Italian Restaurant has fought hard to survive. The way Stacey has adapted and at the same time supported our village community has been impressive.

Just over a year ago Ray's Italian Kitchen was a popular restaurant, - it is now an indoor & outdoor casual dining and meeting place, delicatessen, pizza & pasta takeaway, as well as the original weekend restaurant. They are even offering Luxury Picnics to enjoy at the beach or home.

When you next visit Milford on Sea high street why not pop in to take a look, you are likely to be impressed with the changes - and will probably come out with a treat you could not resist!

About Ray's Italian Restaurant

Located in the heart of Milford on Sea, Ray’s Italian Kitchen run by local restaurateur, Stacey Crouch is making its mark on this foodie-renowned village in the New Forest.

Lovingly named after Stacey’s father, Ray’s Italian Kitchen offers morning coffee, brunch, lunch and pizza & pasta takeaways. On the weekends the restaurant serves carefully selected dishes, big on flavour and taste and the option of a 'Small Plate' grazing menu for sharing.

In 2021 a delicatessen with wonderful treats was added, alongside a luxury picnic menu to takeaway and enjoy at the beach or home.

Every detail of the restaurant has been carefully selected by Stacey, down to the sophisticated interior in tones of gold and blue, creating a place for eating, drinking, talking and sharing.

Alfresco dining can also be enjoyed in the warmer months in the sun-soaked courtyard, where flatbreads and small plates can be enjoyed until 9pm.

Ray’s Italian Kitchen with its vibrant atmosphere is proving to be a must eat place among locals and visitors.
