Brett Brooks at Milford on Sea Club

Come and and enjoy live music with singer/entertainer, Brett Brooks. at Milford on Sea Club on Saturday 19th August 2023 from 8pm.

Brett is an inspirational and professional vocalist providing entertainment from the 60's through to the present day. Brett is perfect for entertaining a wide audience of ages, with a bubbly and enthusiastic personality that will provide for a fun and enjoyable event.

Brett has performed at numerous prestigious venues in live bands and solo across the South, and he has a strong following in Portsmouth, Fareham and Southampton. Brett is a dynamic vocalist, one you should make sure you go and see.

Tickets: £5 per person.

You can enjoy live sports on Sky & BT, snooker & pool tables, darts, and a jukebox. There is also a well-stocked bar with guest ales and excellent club prices.

Regular activities include: Weekly Bingo on Sunday's & Thursdays, Tuesday Free Pool Night, Sunday Meat Draw, Quiz Nights, Discos, Live Music and Entertainment Nights.

Fish & Chips Cruise

The Friends of Hurst Castle will once again be enjoying their popular Fish & Chip Cruise on Wednesday 13th September 2023.

The trip will be take place on Solent Rose from Hurst Ferries, departing Keyhaven for Yarmouth on the Isle of Wight at 6pm and returning to Keyhaven at 9pm.

The evening out on the water, and enjoying traditional fish and chips costs just £17 per person.

The cruise has just 50 places available, so an early sell out is expected.

If you would like to go, or to get a chance to go next time, please join the Friends of Hurst Castle. 

It doesn't cost much, and you can have a lot of fun joining in with their many enjoyable activities!

About the Friends of Hurst Castle

The Friends is a local support group to Hurst Castle, providing help in any way they can – which over the years has included enhancement of the building, mounting information panels and displays, guiding visitors and research.

The Friends of Hurst Castle are always happy to welcome new members, friends and volunteers. You can just enjoy news from Hurst Castle, and social days out, or get as involved as you wish.

The Friends of Hurst Castle also publish a regular newsletter; Hurst Tidings, which celebrated its 100th edition in 2022. As well as news about the castle, it features articles that range from history to the environment, as well as coverage of activities and events organised by the Friends. 

Annual Subscriptions:

Single: £12 per year
Joint: £19 per year: Two adults at one address.
Family; £30 per year: Two adults at one address, and their children or grandchildren aged 17 and under. Please Note: Only three children may be taken into the castle per visit. Additional children will of course be welcome, at the current entry fee of £4 per child aged 5-17, while children under five remain free of charge.

Milford Art Group Exhibition Success

The Milford Art Group celebrated their golden anniversary in style, with 105 paintings being sold to visitors during the exhibition, beating their own target of 100.

This successful annual Art Exhibition featured over 330 paintings from 48 local artists, plus lots of bespoke greetings cards.

This year’s art exhibition was open every day from Sunday 30th July until is open from 10am to 5.30pm daily, Sundays 11am to 5.30pm and the Last Saturday 10am to 4pm.

If you did visit you will have seen an array of local talent with a wide variety of original art featuring local scenes, seascapes, animals, portraits, abstract, modern art, mixed media. there were also bespoke greetings cards and more.

About Milford Art Group

Milford Art Group were founded in 1973 and are celebrating their golden anniversary in 2023. The group has around 65 full members and 25 associate artists who gather to promote art skills, knowledge, and fellowship and to arrange periodic exhibition of their work.

The artists meet on the First Thursday of each month from 2pm to 4.30pm in All Saints' Church Hall to enjoy demonstrations by professional artists of art in framed pictures of landscape, still life, seascape and portraiture in diverse materials including oils, acrylics, water colour, pastel, inks, mixed media and more.

Visitors are welcome to these demonstrations for a small fee.

When the weather permits, they also meet on Milford Green for a couple of hours on Wednesday mornings to paint and chat.

Milford Art Group hold an annual two-week exhibition at the beginning of August in All Saints' Church Hall where members show and, perhaps, sell their paintings to the public.

Mystery Symbol on Lazy Lion Wall

A curious symbol was spotted on the outside wall of the Lazy Lion in Milford on Sea high street.

The symbol is an 'arrow with a horizontal line above'.


After a little research, the symbol has been identified as an Ordnance Survey Benchmark.

As the Ordinance Survey explains: Many think the Benchmark symbol is War Office-related, but it is in fact an OS Benchmark (BM) and a means of marking a height above sea level. 

Surveyors in our history made these marks to record height above Ordnance Datum Newlyn (ODN – mean sea level determined at Newlyn in Cornwall). If the exact height of one BM was known, the exact height of the next could be found by measuring the difference in heights, through a process of spirit levelling. 

They can be found cut into houses, churches, bridges and many other structures. There are around 500,000 benchmarks in various formats dotted across Great Britain, although we no longer use them today.

Today, our surveyors use GNSS technology and it takes just seconds to do a task which could take days in our past.

The White Horse
PS: Since publishing this article, local historian, and friend of Milford on Sea News, Bob Braid has informed us that there is also a Benchmark on the front wall of the White Horse pub, which is currently derelict and awaiting redevelopment

He also knows that there is one on All Saints' Church, and one on the boundary wall of Saltgrass at Keyhaven. He expects that there are also others as well.

If you spot any Benchmarks around the village, please let us know and we will add them to the list.

The Fine Southern Gents at The Smugglers

The Smugglers Inn in Milford on Sea have Live Music on Sunday 13th August 2023 from 4pm to 6pm. (Hopefully in the garden).

The Fine Southern Gents will provide an afternoon of live music, playing popular tunes to get you up dancing or foot tapping!

'Excellent Rating' for Milford on Sea Beach

New Forest District Council have announced that Milford on Sea Beach has been awarded an 'Excellent Rating' for water quality by the Environment Agency.

Every year, the Environment Agency monitors the water quality of beaches in the district and has rated Milford on Sea, Barton-on-Sea and Calshot as excellent.

Milford on Sea is designated as bathing waters, where members of the public are welcome to use them for recreational water activities.

At intervals from May to September, the Environment Agency take water samples at the beaches, which are analysed against the standards in the European Bathing Water Directive. These are strict bacteriological standards that if breached would indicate possible sewage contamination.

Every May, signs are put up at each beach to display the water quality information and include QR codes linking to the latest sample results.

Since moving to Milford on Sea in 2020, Paul Anderson has been busy helping local people to improve the inside of their homes.

Paul is a carpenter by trade, and also able to turn his hand to expertly complete many interior décor tasks.

His services include; bespoke carpentry, painting and wallpapering. 

He also works closely with Bournemouth based Vesta Culina, installing their excellent range of  kitchens, bedroom furniture, and media walls.

Take a Day Out on the New Forest Bus Tour

The New Forest Tour Bus started operating in Milford on Sea on Saturday 25th June, and will continue until Sunday 18th September 2022.

So, there is still plenty of time to hop on and take a trip around the New Forest.

The circular Blue Route runs from & to: Milford on Sea, Everton, Lymington, Brockenhurst via Burley, New Milton and Barton on Sea.

Dogs and Bikes are welcome on the Tour and you can 'Hop on and off 'wherever you like and catch the next Tour bus, or switch between routes, all on the same ticket.

Final Places for Paddleboard Polo Night

There are only 4 team places left for the The Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP) Polo Night at Keyhaven Quay this Thursday, 10th August 2023 from 6pm to 8.30pm.

Get your friends together and enter a team. All you need is a team of 3 paddlers and the polo paddle and boards can be provided.

15 minutes a game and the winner goes through to the next round.

Since 2015, Sean, Claire and their team have been based in Milford on Sea and providing courses and various fun activities for paddle boarding, kayaking, wing surfing and wing foiling. One hour Taster Sessions are available for anyone wanting to give any activity a go. Another Breakfast on the Beach on Sunday

The second Breakfast on the Beach takes place on Sunday morning 13th August 2023 at 10.30am, outside Beach Hut 102.

Come along and join a service by All Saints' Church on Milford on Sea Beach including breakfast!

Kids can bring buckets and spades ready for a sandcastle building competition on the Beach, or the Green behind if the tide is an issue.

Classic Opera & Ballet at The Bridge

Did you know that The Bridge in Sea Road, regularly provides Live Screenings from The Royal Opera and The Royal Ballet?

A full programme of classic operas & ballets are now scheduled to take place from this September, right through to June 2024.

Many of the live performances take place on a Sunday afternoon, and you can watch them directly screened to Milford on Sea for just £16. Tickets are now on sale at The Bridge Box Office.

Be part of the 2024 Village Pantomime

If you would like to be part of the very popular village pantomime at The Bridge next year, please just come along to the Auditions/Readthrough at 3pm on Sunday 17th September, 3.00pm at The Bridge.

The 2024 pantomime will be Jack & the Beanstalk and performed 18th to 21st January 2024.

Lucas Raye Live at The Cave on Wednesday

Come down and enjoy the free live music with Lucas Raye at The Cave on Wednesday 9th August 2023 from 8pm.

Musician, singer and songwriter from the south coast of England, Lucas writes, records and produces his own music and performs all over the UK. He has appeared on various FM radio stations, played at numerous festivals, hundreds of events and performed thousands of gigs.

Lucas uses a loop pedal, drum sampler and acoustic guitar to build up a full live sound without relying on pre-recorded material. The sound is incredible - you should come and have a listen.

With an extensive set list packed with popular covers, Lucas is ideal for a good night out!

Free: Folk at the Bridge Singers Night

This month, Folk at the Bridge are holding a Singers Night on Thursday 10th August 2023.

Free Entry this month, come along and support your local talent.

Floor Singers from 7.30pm. Everyone invited.


Normal Folk Nights:

Folk at The Centre features live performances Every 2nd Thursday of Every Month.

Everyone is invited to come and enjoy the live music performances from featured performers.

Entry is £5 with a ticket available in advance, or pay on door.

The bar opens at 7.15pm with the music playing until 10.30pm'ish.

 The Gun Inn have published their new Full Summer Opening Hours.

On Busier evenings The Gun stays open later, and on quieter evenings last orders are called half hour before closing.

New Village What's On Calendar Upgraded for Mobiles... and more

The popular village What's On Calendar has received a significant upgrade, with new features and improved navigation.

As Milford on Sea village has so much happening, our original What's On Calendar became crowded, so we have now separated it into two calendars, which are easy to switch between using the top menu on the website.

New Clubs, Classes & Sports Calendar
All clubs, classes, sports and other activities can now be found in the new 'Clubs, Classes & Sports Calendar' on the website. You can find this by using the new menu at the top of the 'What's On Calendar'. 

What's On Calendar
The 'What's On Calendar' continues, but now just shows the numerous village events for your enjoyment & entertainment.

You can Add Your Events, Club, Class or Sport

Free Live Music at The Cave in August

The Cave have launch Free Wednesday Live Music Nights for August 2023. Familiar popular acts are joined by some exciting & talented new faces.

Wednesday 2nd August at 8pm: Marky Dawson
We welcome Marky to The Cave for the first time, Marky is a charismatic showman with a huge voice - that covers Musical Theatre Jazz and Rock- alongside Piano chops which could make Jerry Lee Lewis blush!

Wednesday 9th August at 8pm: Lucas Raye
Back by popular demand, musician, singer and songwriter, Lucas uses a loop pedal, drum sampler and acoustic guitar to build up a full live sound without relying on pre-recorded material. The sound is incredible - you should come and have a listen!

Wednesday 16th August at 8pm: Jon Bailey
Jon is a very talented cover artist based in Dorset and back with us for a second time. We are sure you will love him entertaining you with a great variety 90's & 00's favourites.

Wednesday 23rd August at 8pm: Alex Kirche
Alex returns to the Cave, bringing with him his relaxed style and massive talent, playing popular songs of the 80s all the way through to the present day. Even if you have a request, Alex will do his best to accommodate you, no matter how bizarre! ! !

Wednesday 30th August at 8pm: Alex Gonzato
Joining us at The Cave for the first time, Alex will wow you drawing on inspiration from some of his musical heroes, like Paul McCartney, Freddie Mercury and Jeff Buckley. Alex lends his voice to a wide array of music genres, let's give Alex a big warm Cave welcome.

Come down and enjoy an evening of live music over a few drinks, and if you fancy, you can also enjoy some tasty dishes from the Tapas menu.


Summer Sundowners at The Lighthouse

The Lighthouse seaside bar and restaurant on Milford on Sea seafront are now hosting their Summer Sundowners from 6pm Every Friday until the beginning of September.

The free live music is outside on the terrace, if the weather is not great, it can sometimes be moved inside. No need to book, just grab a drink and a spot on the sea wall to kick start your weekend!
