Fundraising for a Magical Milford at Christmas

Autumn is fast approaching and Diana Brushwood and Tracy Haupt are already busy planning this year’s Christmas display on the village green.

The substantial plans for this year will hopefully bring lots of well needed cheer to our lovely village after a difficult 18 months of Covid restrictions.

The downside to this is the cost of the additional commercial grade lights, the extra Christmas trees, and the professional installation of all the lighting displays.

Obviously, all these extra items will be in addition to all the commercial grade lights which have been purchased over the last couple of years.

If you would like to help us achieve this, please donate through the link below – large or small donations will be gratefully received.

To donate, please click here and type in Milford on Sea Charitable Trust. Also, when donating please type Christmas in the special message box, this ensures the money goes into the correct account.

You can also make a cash/cheque donation at the Parish Council Office.

Thank you to everyone who can help get the village joyous this Christmas for the whole village to enjoy.

Help to build a stage set for village show

Live theatre is back! - and help is needed to build the set for the stage.

Neil Simon's Rumours will be staged at the Community Centre for, and on behalf of, the Milford on Sea Community Centre in October.

To allow this show to go ahead there is a major set build to achieve.

Over the last few months the building of the stage extensions has been completed and shortly the flats will be completed.

These are/will be held in store until we need them in October.

To bring all this to a successful conclusion, it will require 3 days of stage and set building at the Community Centre.

The set builder and Stage Manager, Grahame Goodyer, estimates that he will need at least 4 people to help on each day. The village show producers are therefore looking for volunteers to put themselves forward to assist on each day.

This is manual work and some of the stage items are very heavy, so we particularly need able-bodied people prepared to help lift heavy loads. However, if you can use a screwdriver or hammer, there are jobs for you to do as well.

Days volunteers required to help are:-
  • Friday Oct 22 from 12pm through to 5pm
  • Saturday 23 Oct from 8am through to 8pm
  • Sunday 24 October from 9am through to 6pm
We accept that most people will not be able to put in a full day but if you are available to help, for any period of time on any day, we would ask you to put your name forward.

If you can help, please can you contact Grahame by email at grahame@goodyer.org or call/message him on 07860 587272.

Enticing Autumn Film Evenings by the Big Screen

The Village’s Community Centre is delighted to announce a return to a full autumn programme of movies and “live” screenings at the Centre.

Highlights of the special screenings feature Mick Fleetwood with a stella line up of his friends filmed live at the London Palladium last year, Cliff Richard’s The Great 80 Tour from the Royal Albert Hall, Handa Opera’s magnificent La Traviata from the water stage in Sydney Harbour and of course the Royal Ballet’s perennial Christmas favourite The Nutcracker from the Royal Opera House. Into the mix goes Concerto – A Beethoven Journey which follows concert pianist’s Leif Ove Andsnes’ epic interpretation of the Master’s five piano concerti, Northern Ballet’s bodice-ripping retelling of Dangerous Liaisons set to music by Vivaldi and a visit to the Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam’s extraordinary exhibition of the five publicly-owned paintings of Sunflowers. The screenings programme is completed with a requested encore of the award winning movie of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Phantom of the Opera, a bold new interpretation of Romeo & Juliet filmed in seventeen days on a single stage in a pandemically emptied National Theatre and the first visit of the awe inspiring and uplifting Cirque du Soleil with its fabulous Worlds Away seamlessly combining daring acrobatics and intense artistry into a simple yet emotionally rich story.

The movies programme kicks off with the Oscar winning Nomadland with Frances McDormand’s wonderful portrayal of a cheerful, resourceful middle aged woman who has lost everything; puppy Bella a lost but high spirited and friendly animal who has to find A Dog’s Way Home; a biography of Audrey Hepburn who faced a life-long battle with the traumas of her past to become one of the world’s greatest cultural icons; A United Kingdom which tells a romantic true story of interracial marrying from our dowdy post-war past with terrific warmth and idealism; a gentle, sweet, funny story of love in later life realised over 23 Walks, an enchanting film about a Korean family making a new start in rural 80s Arkansas Minari; and concluding with Sheila Hancock’s Edie who turns her back on her family sending her to a care home to climb the remote imposing Mount Suilven in the far north of Scotland.

All the movies and screenings are in the Centre, with 60 comfortable seats arranged cabaret style around small tables – this makes sure everyone has a good view and a place to put their drinks.

Book early to avoid disappointment – sadly seats cannot be guaranteed if you just turn up on the door.

More information and to book seats pop along to the Box Office at the Centre in Sea Road (or telephone (01590) 644861 or visit website www.moscommunitycentre.org.uk.

Busking for BECOME Charity on the Village Green

Each year 10,000 young people are dropped by the care system at the age of 18 and have to fend for themselves. This is called the 'Care Cliff' and is a disaster with 50% of them really struggling with their transition to adulthood without family support. Add this up and we have c.500,000 care experienced people nationwide, many of whom have lifelong issues caused by their experiences.

Local pensioner Mark Law is fundraising for the national registered charity BECOME, the charity for children in care and young care leavers. Following a discussion with MoS Parish Council, Mark has been given permission to perform several sponsored busking gigs on the Village Green.

You can sponsor him with all funds going directly to BECOME via his JustGiving page by clicking here.

These impromptu gigs on the Village Green are weather dependent and will most likely occur around lunchtimes and early evenings in the coming weeks. Repertoire is a mix of popular covers and original material.

Mark would love to hear from you so why not drop by and say hello?

You can also contact Mark on email by clicking here.

The founder is entrepreneur Fiona MacDuff, who lives in Milford on Sea and has a background in graphic design & working in top London marketing agencies.

Fiona said; "Choosing a name for the company was easy...the name duff-t comes from duff - something we would consider to be rubbish. Why not turn something that we consider to be rubbish into something we could reuse?

All our unique duff-t tees are recyclable - so once you are done, send it back, and we will recycle it so it can be used again.

All our duff-t designs are created from home - so no extra energy used in maintaining an office space.

We hope you enjoy wearing duff-t tees as much as we've enjoyed designing them. Every idea we have comes from our heart."

All of the Duff-T Tees products are printed in the UK in a renewable energy powered factory. Please click here to find out more

Could you help out at the Sea Scouts?

Milford & Keyhaven Sea Scout Group are in great need of retired adults who have spare time, enjoy outside activities and would like to help our young people to grow into confident adults. Cooking, knots, sailing, crafting, if you feel you have a skill you would like to share, then they would like to hear from you!

The group meet on a Thursday at 5.30/6pm till 8pm.

Despite Covid, the scouts have been actively sailing, kayaking and adventuring, giving our young people a chance to express themselves, build confidence and grow outside of restrictive classroom environments.

We hear that this year our younger group have become extremely proficient kayakers!

The Sea Scout Group operate as a group of leaders with not any one leader as they feel this works better. The leaders actively take part in activities specific to their skills.

If you would like to be part of a great local Scout group, and take part in the on the water activities, land activities, camp and walks, please get in touch. they already have two retired leaders who are actively part of this group.

A DBS would be needed, which the scout leaders will do, and some basic training which involves a couple of modules that won't take longer than about 3 hours to complete.

To get in touch or to find out more please send Fiona MacDuff a message through her Facebook page by clicking here.

Rob & Nick Win Classic Offshore Powerboat Race

The local powerboat racing team of Rob Lister & Nick Crouch won their Honda Four Stroke class in Sunday's Cowes-Torquay-Cowes race, they were also 3rd overall in all classes.

The Cowes-Torquay-Cowes is a spectacular British Powerboat Racing Club race and one of the biggest events in the powerboating calendar. Over 30 teams, including boats and drivers from the UK, America, Germany and Italy competed in this exhilarating run to the Dorset coast and back.

The 200-mile Cowes Torquay Cowes race has long been recognised as one of powerboating’s toughest challenges, and comparisons have been made with motorsport events such as Le Mans and the Indy 500.

The race crosses Christchurch Bay and provided great entertainment for those watching from Milford on Sea beach.

In December 2018, Rob Lister and Nick Crouch were crowned UKOPRA Offshore Class 3 British champions.

Perry McCarthy, aka BBC Top Gear’s 'Stig', presented the Class 3 trophy at the Royal Southern Yacht Club.

Rob and Nick started the season well, excelling in rough conditions at Falmouth. Then disaster struck when whilst leading at Poole they were forced to retire due to propeller failure. Finally, a crucial win in rough conditions at Cowes Torquay/Poole Race earned them the British Class 3 title.

They also won the Tim Powell Trophy for “most outstanding performance”.

Dolphins spotted from Milford on Sea Beach

Last week a pair of dolphins were spotted playing offshore from Milford on Sea beach.

Many people were able to watch the dolphins from Milford on Sea beach which can only have brightened anyone's day.

The photo below perfectly captures them frolicking close to The Needles. Sadly, we don't know who captured this great image, but if someone knows, please tell us and we will be more than happy to give them a credit.

Milford Girls Cricket continues to thrive

Milford Girls Cricket, which started with homemade videos during the first Lockdown last year, has grown from strength to strength and was celebrated with an end of season Grand Finale event at Barnes Lane Recreation Ground last Friday.

The 21 Milford schoolgirls split into their two usual training teams – the Heys and the Hoes (named after Rachael Heyhoe Flint, the former English Women’s Captain) and played an exciting 20 over match, loudly cheered on by friends and family.

The match went to the wire with a narrow win for the Heys and was followed by an Awards ceremony and BBQ, organised by the parents.

The Milford girls have achieved much in the last 16 months. From complete novices, nine have played District Cricket, with two featuring in the U11 Hampshire Girls squad. Five Y4 Milford schoolgirls were crowned Hampshire U9 Champions a couple of weeks ago and earlier in the summer eight of the U11s became Hampshire Champions or Runners-up in both softball and hardball.

Support Magical Milford at Christmas

No one wants to wish away the summer or even start thinking about what might be happening in four months’ time, but Autumn is fast approaching and Diana Brushwood and Tracy Haupt are already busy planning this year’s Christmas display on the village green.

Survey results received from the local community have once again requested more lights and trees to be added to last year’s event, making it even brighter and more festive.

The substantial plans for this year will hopefully bring lots of well needed cheer to our lovely village after a difficult 18 months of Covid restrictions.

The downside to this is the cost of the additional commercial grade lights, the extra Christmas trees and the professional installation of all the lighting displays.

The ladies are looking to raise £8,000 from local businesses and individuals to pay for this.

Obviously, all these extra items will be in addition to all the commercial grade lights which have been purchased over the last couple of years.

There are two different ways to get involved…

If you are a local business the packages range from £100 to £2,200 for full sponsorship of the ‘Winter Wonderland’ area on the village green. The earlier a business comes on board the more promotion they will receive.

If you would like to know more about the sponsorship packages available, then please get in touch with Lynn by clicking here for further information.

The second way to be involved is for individuals to donate via The Charity Aid Foundation for Magical Milford at Christmas, through Milford on Sea Charitable Trust.

To find out more; please click here and type in Milford on Sea Charitable Trust. When donating please type Christmas in the special message box, this ensures the money goes into the correct account.

Many people have been unable to enjoy their holidays/cruises abroad over the last eighteen months could you spare some of that saved cash for the village Christmas event please?
