A quintessentially English village green

Anyone who lives in or visits Milford on Sea knows that it is a special place, and in many way a throwback to time gone by.

This was perfectly captured by Jean Maye, who whilst our walking came across a random group of musicians on Milford on Sea village green who were being enjoyed by people relaxing and a quizzical and attentive dog!

This quintessentially English scene is typical of why we love Milford on Sea.

Mums walk Jurassic Coast for friends

In a few days time local mums, Alexandra Hayes and Diz Dunn will be tackling the full length of the Jurassic coast in a bid to raise as much money as possible their friends in the village, Jo and Matilda Rivron (mum and daughter) who are both battling cancer. Their charity 'Rivronstrong' has been set up to bring awareness and give money to the smaller cancer charities that help families and children during their fight.

Diz and Alexandra will walk the 95 - 100 miles of undulating coastline in 4 days. As part of their preparation they have been walking or running around the village, and it is now their last week of training before a short rest, and then on to the challenge.

The Birth of MEG

The Birth of MEG
(The Milford Environment Group)
1991 to 2011

So, what has Michael Fish got to do with the birth of MEG aka the Milford Environment Group?

Therein lays the tale that Keith Metcalf tells in his latest 44 page A4 mini-book on the formation of the group at the end of the 1980s.

He has been helped by the first and last chairpersons of the group; Sandra Ebbetts and Anne Jenks, with a little bit of help also from the former chairman of the Milford-on-Sea Wildlife Recording Group (WRG) Tony Locke.

Keith opens the book by recalling the 15th October 1987 when BBC television weatherman; Michael Fish told the nation that in answer to a woman’s telephone call earlier in the day to the BBC offices, when she asked whether there was a hurricane on the way, unforgettably, Michael Fish said live on TV; “Don’t worry there isn’t”. The rest of course is history with 115mph winds of the Great Storm taking the lives of 18 people across southern England, uprooting an estimated 15 million trees and devastating the Pine Wood at Sharvells Copse.

With the Milford Environment and Wildlife Recording Groups amalgamating in January 2012, Keith recalls the historic records of MEG prior to the two groups joining together. The records have been taken primarily from MEGs minutes, which were recently handed to him by two of its former stalwart chairs; Sandra Ebbetts and Anne Jenks. Keith takes up the story from here.

Having been handed box loads of papers by Sandra and Anne that included minutes, publications, press cuttings, maps, parish council minutes, letters, management plans and many old photographs, I thought that rather than just archive them, I should write a short summary of their content.” Keith goes on to say; “Whilst, these documents will finally be handed over to the Milford-on-Sea Historical Record Society, I thought it unlikely that anyone else would make the records available to a wider local audience, hence this account of how, 30-years ago, MEG came into being and what they did for the environment, the nature reserves, wildlife and the local community, their work of which has since been carried on by the Milford Conservation Volunteers (MCV) since January 2012.

Copies of the book are available directly from Keith by emailing him at keithmetcalf@btinternet.com giving him your postal address and contact details.

This limited edition book will be available from 1st July at £7.50 per copy: Free delivery to any household in Milford-on-Sea or, postage elsewhere, at cost.

Last copies of 'Tales of The Beach House and Beyond'

Some final copies of 'Tales from The Beach House and Beyond' are now available.

The book sold exceptionally well, with less than 20 copies remaining, and the local authors from The Scribe Tribe anticipate a sell out.

Milford on Sea School will benefit by around £550, assuming all remaining books are sold.

The Scribe Tribe have been inundated with positive comments and are delighted that their first venture into publishing has been such a success.

ABOUT THE BOOK

A group of local authors have written a book entitled; 'Tales of the Beach House and Beyond'.

The launch took place on the village green on Saturday 29th May between 10.30am to 4pm.

This was the great lockdown project for a writing group from Milford on Sea's U3A, whose nickname is The Scribe Tribe.

The Editor, Anne Kelly says it was her salvation during the long days of the winter lockdown but that it was a group effort with everyone combing their various talents to reach a fantastic result.

She goes on to say that some time ago the group were given access to the Westover Hall archives and these inspired a number of fictional stories, loosely based on fact. (Westover Hall is now The Beach House on the cliff top.)

The book is published with the support of the U3A and all profits will go to Milford on Sea School to purchase books enabling a life long interest in reading.
