Christmas Dining in Milford on Sea

12 November 2024

Simon Heaps wins medals at Nigerian Para Open

Milford on Sea's, double amputee GB table tennis player, Simon Heaps is delighted to have returned from the Nigerian Para Open in Lagos, Nigeria having won a Silver and Bronze medal.

He had just competed as the only European in his last International Para Tournament of the year from the 7th to 9th November 2024.

Simon commented: "I have never been to this part of Africa before and it was certainly an experience, you could not meet nicer or more friendly people. Nothing was too much trouble and I have returned to Heathrow this morning with many fond memories."

He also thanked his sponsors: MACRON, WMS Underfloor Heating, MSC Cruises, Will Stone Gas Plumbing & Heating, Everton Hyundai, and all of the individuals that have supported him along the way.

Prior to leaving for Africa, Simon had an eventful 24 hours, as BA would not let him fly because his 'travel and entry' credentials were not in order.

After an unplanned and expensive night in a airport Hotel, urgent intervention by Danielle at British Para Table Tennis resolved the issue.

Ironically, the hastily arranged documents were not asked for at the check-in desk.

In preparation for the Lagos Tournament, Simon had competed the week before in the Para National Championships where he won one Gold and two Silver medals.

Last July, Simon, having won the doubles competition, was deprived of the opportunity of competing in the Gold Medal singles match at the World Masters Para Tournament in Rome, due to match scheduling and his insulin treatment.

An investigation by the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) is still ongoing.
