Free Sign Language Open Day coming soon

Please make a diary note to come along to the Free Sign Language Open Day on Saturday 22nd March from 10am to 12 noon in Milford on Sea Village Hall in Park Road, SO41 0QU.

This informal Open Day will give simple tips on communicating with deaf people, or those with hearing impairment. It will also give an insight into how British Sign Language helps deaf people communicate with their silent world.

It is likely that we all know someone who struggles with their hearing. A visit to the open day would give you valuable tips on the best way to communicate with them.

Everyone is welcome to pop in to this informal open day, whether as an individual, business or organisation.

Just imagine the smiles if you could communicate better with any deaf people you know or meet.

Few that saw it, will ever forget the stunning and highly emotional dance by Rose Ayling-Ellis, as she perfectly danced in silence on Strictly Come Dancing.

Rose is a big supporter of British Sign Language. She has been deaf since birth and uses BSL herself to communicate with the world.

She & Giovanni became Strictly Come Dancing Champions in 2021, during which they performed 'Silent Symphony', without doubt, the best ever dance on this long-running and much loved show.

Deaf Awareness Course: Introduction to British Sign Language

After the Open Day, for those that might be interested, it is planned to hold an Introduction to British Sign Language Course. This course will be ideal for individuals, businesses, groups or organisations.

After three very successful Introduction to British Sign Language Courses in the village, another Ten Week Course is due to start:

Monday 31st March 2025 until Monday 23rd June 2025 from 5pm to 6pm. (Breaks on 2 Bank Holiday Mondays). Held in Milford on Sea Village Hall/Library in Park Road, Milford on Sea, SO41 0QH.

The aim is for you to be able to communicate with deaf people, and this valuable and caring skill can enhance the lives of those you meet who are unable to hear the world around us.

We are fortunate to have Nancy Weatherson running the course, she is a qualified Deaf Communications Professional living in Milford on Sea, and she supports deaf and hard of hearing people throughout the UK.

In 2022 the BSL Act was passed, meaning that British Sign Language has now been recognised as a language of England, Wales and Scotland in its own right. This is a wonderful success for the deaf community.

Nancy works closely with Deaf Professionals and together they have created a Deaf Awareness Course designed to introduce some useful communication tactics to you as an individual, or your group.

If this is something that you believe that you will benefit from and enjoy, now is your chance to learn something new that will really make a difference.

Course Cost: £130 in advance for the whole course | Bring a Friend: £115 each.

About Nancy

Nancy is a warm and friendly person with great communication skills, and she is also a qualified Enhanced DBS Lipspeaker for Deaf and Hard of Hearing people.

Her aim is to deliver deaf awareness across the whole of the New Forest and surrounding Coastal areas and promote and highlight us as leaders in this great new initiative.

Nancy has over 20 years' experience in Hotel Management where she completed her CIPD – HR Masters qualification. This is also where she started her love for British Sign Language when she passed BSL L1 back in 2006. She did this to enable her to communicate with deaf guests that visited her hotel.

Based in Milford on Sea with partner Jon, they are huge ambassadors of the deaf world raising awareness with charity events and deaf socials. Nancy travels regularly to clients in Bristol, London, Fleet and beyond.

Monsoori Heights were delighted to gain the highest level Food Hygiene Rating of 5 following an inspection by the Food Standards Agency on the 17th September 2024.

Elvis at Milford on Sea Club on Saturday

Facelift for Seafront Beach Shelter

New Forest District Council have given the seafront Shelter on Milford on Sea Promenade a makeover ready for Easter and the coming summer season.

There is also a plan for NFDC to add Local Information Boards to the beach shelter. The boards will feature details about the geology, history, and community, as well as informing visitors about nearby facilities. These works are due to be completed later in the year.

Nova Milesko at the Pop Up Strawberry Gallery

Next up at the Pop Up Strawberry Gallery is local artist, Nova Milesko from 11am to 1pm this coming weekend, Saturday 15th & Sunday 16th March 2025.

Pop in to enjoy a mix of colourful eclectic modern art and abstract line drawings.

About The Strawberry Gallery

Gail Steggell opened her latest Pop-Up Contemporary Art Gallery at 61 High Street, Milford on Sea in January 2025, having previously been at 106 High Street from June to December 2023.

The former gallery hosted an eclectic collection of contemporary art and ceramics by predominantly locally based established and emerging artists.

The gallery also featured bespoke greetings cards, solo exhibitions, in addition to art courses and well-being sessions.

Gail formerly ran the popular Tradewinds Gallery in the village where she supported and promoted emerging and established artisans, potters, painters, jewellery makers and the like.

Kirsty's 1000km Fundraising Row for Olivia Inspires

Local resident, Kirsty Melin is embarking on an amazing challenge by rowing 1000km in a team from the Turks and Caicos Islands to Miami USA. 

Kirsty will be raising funds for Milford on Sea based charity, Olivia Inspires.

Kirsty owns Rowing Adventures, a company she set up in 2020 to encourage a new wave of rowers to enjoy learning, exploring and competing in this rewarding sport. 

In 2022, she was challenged with a Lumbar 5 discectomy operation and had to slow down for a while, but with support and perseverance, her return to the water was inevitable and adventuring continued.

By 2024, her back was strong enough take on the challenge of rowing Loch Ness with 4 close friends. They rowed 33km in 3 hours. 

Some years ago, Kirsty was presented with a Volunteer Coach award by Nigel and Paula Burt on behalf of the Olivia Inspires charity. So, she decided to approach Nigel and Paula to see if her next rowing challenge would be a way to inspire and raise more funds for them.

Kirsty's next challenge is to row 1000km from the Turks and Caicos Islands to Miami. 

The row starts on Monday 3rd March 2025 and this epic adventure is expected to take 14 days.

The team will be rowing though the Exumas Islands to Bahamas and onto Miami.

Before the challenge commenced, Kirsty arrived early in The Turks, where she volunteered with a  local charity, Footsteps 4 Good, offering taster rowing sessions to locals.

She also met some of the crew which consisted of: 3 USA, and 4 Danes. 5 Brits were due to arrive.

The full team consists of 12 rowers, rowing in 3 hour shift pattern. When the crew are off the oars, they eat, rest and complete boat maintenance. Shifts run through the night.

About Olivia Inspires

Olivia Inspires assist children and young people aged 11 to 18 years, whose families live in the New Forest District Council area and who are facing financial hardship. 

They do this by making grants of money, normally no more than £500, to provide items or services to enable them to achieve their potential in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), the arts and sport.

The charity was founded by Milford on Sea resident Nigel Burt and his wife Paula, in memory of their daughter Olivia, who was sadly lost in tragic circumstances.

About Rowing Adventures

Kirsty Melin founded Rowing Adventures Ltd in 2020 to encourage a new wave of rowers, from the age of 8+, to enjoy learning, exploring and competing in this popular sport.

The organisation's aim is to make coastal rowing available to all ages and abilities, and to provide safe, fun access to the Solent and beyond. They  deliver a progressive ‘Learn’ coaching programme using a range of stable, single sculls appropriate for relaxed skill development. 

They also offer a coastal 'Explore' programme for both novice and seasoned rowers to access our incredible rich coastline.

As a result, over 550 new rowers are now afloat on rivers, lakes, seas and oceans.

Kirsty has rowed at Lymington ARC since 2011.

In 2024, she completed her Co-Skipper qualifications and rowed the Caledonian Canal. Later that year, she returned to Scotland to race in the 'Monster the Loch' a 33km row from Dores Beach to St Augustus.

In 2025, Kirsty's took on the challenge to row 1000km from the Turks and Caicos Islands to Miami in a team of 12 international rowers.

Bonnie moved to Milford on Sea with her family in 2020, and prior to this had a career in brand strategy with BBC Worldwide and Macmillan Cancer Support in London.

Having a long-time passion for baking and a young daughter, it felt like the natural next step for Bonnie to start her own cake making business, and this is how Nauti Treats was born.

Bonnie specialises in custom cupcake orders, from Winnie the Pooh-themed christening cakes to gluten-free and dairy-free dark chocolate birthday cakes. New Menu

In the past few weeks a new menu has been introduced. Alongside the classics, there are new choices including homemade Thai infused cod fishcakes, fritters, Southern fried chicken, pies and more. 



Kids Menu with a drink for a great value £5. Children can choose from cod bites, small sausage, or 4 chicken nuggets, all with chips, plus a fruit juice or water.

They have also introduced Lunchtime Special Deals which have tempting options to choose from £6.

There is also a regular Specials Menu which has already included options such as: saveloy, scampi, sweet chilli king prawns, halloumi fries, onion rings, mozzarella sticks, garlic mushrooms, whitebait, cheesy chips, and jalapenos poppers.

The fish & chip shop also has new extended opening times for the winter, which will increase in Summer 2025.

It is great to see that the team get many great online reviews from customers and are they are looking forward to an exciting 2025.

About Mister Pink's

Mister Pink's fish & chip shop was founded over 50 years ago by Malcolm 'Mac' Pink. Following Mac's retirement, his son, Steve Pink took control of running Mister Pink's until recently.

The popular takeaway was originally located in the high street towards Keyhaven before moving to its current location on Church Hill, Milford on Sea many years ago.

Mac Pink lived in retirement until the grand age of 93, before passing peacefully in January 2024.

Steve Pink had been at the heart of Mister Pinks for over 40 years, before in December 2024 taking well-earned retirement. 

Ella and Dave purchased the long-standing and much valued village fish & chip shop in December 2024.

Previously, Ella had been Assistant Manager, and Dave the long term Chef, at The Smugglers Inn just across the road.

On taking over, the couple introduced an extended menu, specials, a kids menu, and a brand new logo for the business.
