Pete's Detailing will be offering interior, exterior & full valets, machine polishing, upholstery cleaning, engine bay detail and more to keep you car looking its best. You can see contact details for Pete's Detailing below. Pete will also be taking on Jacque's little red van, which will still be seen driving around the village.

Amanda wins Silver Award at prestigious Cake International

Milford on Sea celebration cake maker, Mandy Black once again demonstrated her creative talents to win the Silver Prize at Cake International 2024 held at the National Exhibition Centre, Birmingham.

To win her award she beat off other extraordinary creations from international cake bakers.

Mandy commented: "After hours and hours of work and planning, four days of being on that infamous pink carpet, my Charles Dickens Christmas cake design was awarded a Silver Prize at Cake International.

I truly couldn’t contain my joy, my first ever entry into any of this type of competition and to enter the hardest and biggest one in the world, to be awarded such an accolade is just incredible, but to have scored so highly to have just narrowly missed a gold award is just beyond my wildest dreams. I will be back next year, I’ve a feeling this could become addictive.

This cake will be travelling with me to fairs so even more people will get to see it after the thousands of people this weekend, lord knows how many photos were taken of it but listening to the comments of the general public it went down a storm, which was worth as much as that gold medal."

If you would a celebration cake made, you can contact Mandy on 07914 586441 or at elmsleighcakes1@aol.com.

---------------------------------
About Amanda Black Cakes

Mandy founded her company in Milford on Sea as Elmsleigh Cakes in 2011.

Mandy's journey so far has taken her from being a computer operations manager who started making cakes for her kids, and on to making cakes for everyone, including our royal family.

Mandy makes impressive celebration cakes, such as wedding cakes, and cakes for a birthday, anniversary, engagement, baby shower, and other special events.

In 2022 (and again in 2023), Mandy received worthy recognition of her talents as a baker and cake artist when she was recognised as one of the Top Three Cake Makers in the New Forest.

In summer 2023, Mandy was invited to be a Cake Judge at the New Forest & Hampshire County Show.

In September 2023, she attended a week-long intensive course led by Paul Bradford, holder of the Disciples D’Escoffier award, and one of the world's most respected cake designers. Here she honed her already exceptional cake-making skills.

During the same year, Mandy rebranded her company to Amanda Black Cakes to reflect the individuality of her ever-evolving cake designs.

In November 2023, Mandy was personally invited by Paul Bradford to feature her cakes in his display at Cake International, the biggest cake show in the world at Birmingham NEC.

At the show, Mandy stood shoulder to shoulder with the big names in cake design from around the world. People that she looked up to, and whose books she bought when first starting creating amazing cakes.

In March 2024, Mandy won the Cakeflix Cake of the Month competition, this was quickly followed in May 2024, when four of her cakes were featured in an article in the Your Hampshire and Dorset Wedding Magazine.

In August 2024, she was commissioned by the Beaulieu National Motor Museum to design and bake a cake to celebrate the 50 Year Anniversary of the Beaulieu Monorail.

In November 2024, Mandy's Charles Dickens Christmas Cake design won the Silver Prize at Cake International.

Calling the Mansfield Family

Whilst researching and writing the second edition of the History of The Red Lion, the name 'Mansfield' appeared at different times, and we are trying to establish if Bert & Flora Mansfield from 1930/40's are related to Mary Mansfield of the 1970's?

Can anyone can tell us if the 'Mansfield's' above may be related?

Also, if you know of any Red Lion history, or have any old photos, that are not in the 'Edition 2 of History of The Red Lion' (see below), please contact: David at david@milfordonsea.org.

-------------------------------------
In October 1937, Bert Mansfield became the landlord having received the transfer of the license from Walter Hill in Lymington Borough Court.

In 1942, The Bench granted the full transfer of the licence of The Red Lion from Bertram Cecil Mansfield to his wife Flora Mansfield, as the husband is joining the Forces.

In 1943, it was reported in the New Milton Advertiser that Bert and his wife, Flora (who was also known as Mary) had divorced. Alleging Bert’s misconduct with another women.

Flora continued to run the pub assisted by her barman, Bill Gurd. Her brother, Mr C Gill became the first tenant of a post-war council house built in Milford on Sea at 2 Eastern Way in Keyhaven.

In 1952 it was reported in the New Milton Advertiser that Flora Mansfield had received a motoring fine, and her address was reported as The Red Lion Hotel. In the same year, the wedding of her son Rex took place at Milford Parish Church. His bride was a local actress, Miss Glenys Mogg of Almeria House, High Street, Milford on Sea. At this time Bert was reported to be living in London.

In the 1950s and 1960s, The Red Lion Stable, which was beneath the hayloft door, had at one time been Spreadbury’s hardware shop owned by Ted Doughty. Followed by a Sunday Newspaper Shop run by the Bates-Joneses, and after that by Chris Tsoulli. The stable is all now part of the pub interior.

Later, until around 1975, the landlady was Mary Mansfield, who married Ted Doughty. The pub also had a barman called Sinbad who rode around the village on a three-wheeled trike.

About Friends of NCF

In 2007 the founders of Friends of NCF, Steve and Liz Jennings went to Kampala. Whilst there they met some inspirational local Ugandans who had begun a small mission teaching slum children and supporting their families. They returned home determined to help the children and families living in the slum community in Namuwongo and ‘Friends’ was born.

Support started with the sponsorship of children in secondary education and then developed into fundraising for a school building. As the project continued to grow, ‘Friends’ began to finance a feeding programme to help the undernourished children receive a meal during their school day.

Friends of NCF also provide a free newsletter for moral or financial supporters, and welcome anyone wishing to do a fundraising event or challenge. To find out more please contact Matthew at: office@friendsofncf.org

Which is the Crabbing Bridge?

A local question was recently posted on Facebook by Jonathan Ruddle; "I've been here 3 years but I still don't know... When people talk about the 'Crabbing Bridge', which one between Sturt Pond and the sea do they mean? And what is the other one called?"

You can see the debate that ensued by clicking here.

My vote goes to below...

First Bridge: Crabbing Bridge
Sturt Pond. Closest to The Lighthouse in Hurst Road, Milford on Sea.

Second Bridge: Cut Bridge
Junction of New Lane & Saltgrass Lane, Milford on Sea.

The Bridge - 1941
