Hawaiian Summer Party with L8R coming to The Lighthouse

Milford on Sea based L8R Events are hosting a free Hawaiian Summer Afternoon Party of house music at The Lighthouse on Saturday afternoon 6th July 2024 from 2.30pm to 6pm.

Keith  Willsher is the host DJ and event organiser, and he has previously been on stage as the resident DJ at some of London's most legendary 1990s venues, including Peach in Camden Palace, Bagleys, and The Coliseum.

He will be joined by DJ Joe Muggs, a lifelong DJ & music journalist, who has played at some of London's most well-known 1990s night clubs, including Ministry of Sound, and The End. Most recently he was the warm up DJ for the Leftfield Tour 2023 at the O2.

During the afternoon, they will be playing a variety of classic Balearic House Music from the 1990s, all on original Vinyl.

The Lighthouse team will all be wearing Hawaiian outfits, and everyone is invited to get into the spirit by wearing Hawaiian shirts and skirts, or simply go along in summer gear to enjoy the music.

The Lighthouse bar drinks and food menu will be being served to attending music lovers, and as this event will be outside, it will of course be weather dependant.

The event is free, and the organisers would be grateful if anyone would like to make a voluntary donations of £2 to the L8R nominated village charity, Olivia Inspires.

New Forest Social Deaf Club launched in village

Regular readers may be aware of the Deaf Club held the First Tuesday of Every Month from 5pm to 8pm in The Cave. Well, the word has spread and people have been attending from across the New Forest, the informal social gathering is now to be renamed The New Forest Social Deaf Club.

This concept was originally founded in February 2024 as a direct result of FeelHear’s first 10 week Introduction to British Sign Language (BSL) Course in Milford on Sea village.

Organiser Nancy explains: "When our first Introduction to BSL Course completed in December 2023 the delegates asked ‘what’s next? It was decided that we needed a comfortable, safe space for them to practise their new found signing skills in a social environment. There was also the opportunity to invite others who were deaf, hard of hearing, or simply interested in the deaf world. My aim has always been to bridge the gap between the deaf and the hearing world, and what better way to do this than to bring everyone together over a cheeky drink in a posh wine bar! - The Social Deaf Club was born.

Hard of hearing, or not, everyone is welcome.

Upcoming New Forest Social Deaf Club dates this year:

Drop in anytime from 5pm to 8pm.
  • Tuesday 2nd July 2024
  • Tuesday 6th August 2024
  • Tuesday 3rd September 2024
  • Tuesday 1st October 2024
  • Tuesday 5th November 2024
  • Tuesday 3rd December 2024

A Personal Recollection of the D-Day Landings by Gordon Young

The members of Milford on Sea Historical Record Society (MoSHRS) recently had the privilege to watch a personal recollection of the D-Day Landings by Milford on Sea resident, Gordon Young who is in his 100th year.

Gordon was second in command of a Landing Craft-Tank (LCT), which was an amphibious assault craft for landing tanks on D-Day beachheads in Normandy, France.

Gordon was later to be awarded the National Order of the Legion of Honor (Légion d’Honneur) by the French nation for his part in the D-Day Landings on 6th June 1944. He can be seen wearing his medal in the video.

His experiences of the D-Day Landings are certainly worth watching in the video below.

To watch video, please click here.

In his memoirs, Gordon wrote:

"I joined the Royal Navy, signing up at 17 (1942), did my time on the Lower Deck serving in a Mine Layer as a very ‘ordinary ’seaman, doing sea time to qualify for Officer Training, commissioned as a Midshipman (1943) served on a LCT and was at the Normandy Landings in June 1944.

Then had a spell ashore to qualify in Navigation and Watch Keeping and was posted to an Escort Carrier and spent most of the rest of the war in the Far East and was at Singapore for the surrender of the Japanese. By this time I had got my first stripe and was now Sub Lieut. W G Young RNVR.

I was due to be ‘demobbed’ in the October of 1946 and spent the last three months at a Shore Base in Scotland where I met Lieut. Commander Saunders RNR and that is when my career with Pan started."

Gordon then went on to have a long career with the Publishing company Pan Books.

You can read his recollections of these times on the links below:

NFDC commence removal of storm damaged Hordle Cliff Beach Huts

New Forest District Council (NFDC) have announced that their removal of 31 of the most damaged beach huts at Hordle Cliffs will start on Monday 10 June 2024.

The clear devastation is due the beach erosion and ground movement caused by winter storms.

There are currently 300 beach huts at Hordle Cliffs, and a section of the cliff had already been closed for safety reasons, with the most damaged beach huts already having had their licences to have a beach hut on the site terminated.

The clearance operation is understood to be funded from the regular income the council receive from the beach hut owners, and is expected to be completed by mid-June 2024. (Weather dependant.)

NFDC have commented that the eastern section of Hordle Cliffs has become increasingly vulnerable to erosion and ground movement, particularly since Storm Eunice in February 2022, in addition to this winter having been one of the stormiest on record.

The NFDC announcement reads:

We are removing 31 beach huts at Hordle Cliff, Milford on Sea. This will start on Monday 10 June 2024, (weather dependant) and will involve using land-based machinery to undertake the works.

Beach erosion and ground movement caused by winter storms has damaged the beach huts and caused others to be at-risk along the eastern section at Hordle Cliff.

The beach will be closed for safety while the removal is done and reopened around the middle of June.

Paddy’s Gap car park will remain open, but access to the beach from near the car park will be restricted while the work is undertaken.

More information about the beach hut removal can be found on the news section of the NFDC website by clicking here.
