Milford on Sea Beach Hut for £60

Tony Hussey, who now lives in Perth, Western Australia, recalls the many happy years he spent at Hordle Cliffs in Beach Hut No 118, which his late mother had bought for £60 in 1958. At the time, the annual ground rent was 4 Pounds and 4 Shillings!

How times have changed, and Beach Huts at Hordle Cliffs and on Milford on Sea Beach now sell for anything in the region of £20,000 to £40,000+.

Tony's family replaced the original hut in the early eighties and sold it prior to 1989. It is understood that the beach hut is still there.

Successful Sign Language Open Day

The Village Hall was brimming with visitors to the Free Sign Language Open Day last Saturday 3rd February 2024. As a result, 12 people have signed up for the next Introduction to British Sign Language Course which will start in the village from Monday 19th February 2024.

The aim of the course is for you to be able to communicate with deaf & hard of hearing people using British Sign Language.

This valuable and caring skill can enhance the lives of those you meet who are unable to hear the world around us.

It is likely that we all know someone who struggles with their hearing, just imagine the smiles if you could communicate better with any deaf or hard of hearing people you know or may meet.

The course is run by local village resident, Nancy Weatherson a fun and friendly Deaf Communications Professional.

There are still a few places available, so please contact Nancy to find out more at nancy@feelhear.co.uk if you are interested.

--------------------------------------------

'Pop-in' Social Deaf Club

A happy group attended the first 'Pop-in' Social Deaf Club, which is a event where anyone can come into The Cave to meet new people from 5pm to 8pm on the First Tuesday of Every Month.  Hard of hearing, or not, everyone is welcome.

Something people fortunate enough to have good hearing might not realise is that social spaces are often tricky for deaf and hard of hearing people due to inconspicuous background noise.

Also, meeting other people that struggle with their hearing, or people who have some knowledge of British Sign Language, or simply meeting people who are happy to chat to deaf people, is not that easy.

Well, this is where the Social Deaf Club comes in. The idea is simply to bring people together to socialise in a safe and comfortable environment.

Whatever your hearing is like, please just drop in for drink and a chat. Pet dogs also welcome!

Prisoners at Hurst Castle

Hurst Castle have published a short history of prisoners held at Hurst Castle which you may find interesting. Many may know of King Charles 1's imprisonment, but what about a Franciscan friar, Father Paul Atkinson:

Only two unfortunates are known to have endured the bleak walls of Hurst Castle as a prison: one a king, the other a priest who died here after 30 years!

In the winter of 1648 Charles I arrived by boat under Parliamentary guard. He was held in the Tudor keep, probably on the first floor from 1st to 19th December 1648.

Then in 1700 the castle was chosen for a prison for those convicted of spreading the Roman Catholic faith.

A Franciscan friar, Father Paul Atkinson was, however, the only prisoner sent here. He had pleaded guilty of hearing the confession of a young woman, Elizabeth Rich, and absolving her of her sins.

Although both the castle governor and Father Paul himself appealed and pleaded for mercy he remained in the castle for 30 years until his death, at the age of 74.

School Pupils plant New Orchard

Pupils of Milford on Sea Primary School have helped New Milton Sand and Ballast (NMSB) unveil a new orchard, located at Downton Manor Farm Quarry in Milford on Sea.

Working in partnership with The Bumblebee Conservation Trust, the new orchard has been created to benefit local wildlife and will become an important new space for the community.

NMSB’s team were joined at Downton Manor Farm Quarry earlier in February by the primary school students, along with volunteers from the Bumblebee Conservation Trust, and their CEO, Gill Perkins.

Pupils spent the day learning about the importance of trees as food source for bees, as well as being taught how to plant, prune and maintain a healthy tree.

Pupils then planted the final trees in the orchard, marking the project’s completion.

Patrick rowing to Paris & Back

Milford on Sea teenager, Patrick McCabe has completed an impressive fundraising row in aid of Lymington Rowing Club. Along with Toby Hamilton from Boldre, they completed a 100k row over a 24 hour period.

Lymington Rowing Club is popular with many residents from Milford on Sea and contains both junior and senior members from the village.

The club held the 24 hour 'Lymington to Paris Row' to raise much needed funds for the club. Over the 24 hours, 73 members from all sections of the club took part, with a total of over 750km being rowed and £3,750 (and counting) raised.

With the 350km distance to Paris achieved on Saturday 10th February 2024 at 10pm, half way through the event, it was a race against time to make it back to Lymington as the junior members led the night shift. Then, as dawn broke, it was all hands to the ergs to make it home - with the final rowers ending the challenge on a grand total of 751,825m.

The amount raised will go toward the club’s Big Boat Fund goal of £20,000, which will buy much needed boats and equipment to enable the club to meet the growing demand for rowing from the local community.
