History of The Gun Inn

We think there has been a dwelling on the site of the Gun Inn since the 1600’s, but the earliest tangible reference is from the Churchwardens accounts of 1783 when it is referred to as ‘The House at the sign of the Gun’. By 1790 it is simply named ‘The Gun’. Various other sources mention ‘The Pot House’ or ‘Ale House’, so we have assumed that rate payers at this property were in fact ‘Landlords’.

We have found reference to 27 landlords since 1783. Two were drowned at Keyhaven, five were named George, two were women and most served for two to three years. The longest serving was Arthur Payne (pictured below) from 1871 until his death in 1909, some 38 years. The most recent tenants, Paul and Jacquie Hill, come in a close second at 33 years service.

Due to his fame in the world of Wild Fowling, it has often been said that ‘The Gun’ was named for Colonel Peter Hawker’s punt gun, but Hawker didn’t make his first visit to Keyhaven until 1814, some 24 years after the first records appear naming the building as ‘The Gun’. We think it is more likely that the sign post for Hurst Castle simply had a gun on it, and that sign stood in front of the building which now carries its name.

Morgan Sports Cars visit South Lawn

The Morgan Sports Car Club New Forest Centre held their Annual Lunch at South Lawn Hotel on Sunday 21st May 2023.

This spectacular array of Morgan Sports Cars made a great display of classic British design on a gloriously sunny day.

The Morgan Sports Car company was established in 1909 by H.F.S Morgan with the design of the classic Morgan Three Wheeler. This was followed, in 1936, by the Morgan 4-4, based on the Morgan steel chassis, with the car's hand-crafted frame continuing to be made of ash wood. These iconic British cars are still made today at the Morgan factory in Malvern, Worcestershire.

Polar Bear spotted at The Needles

We came across this excellent photograph revealing a Polar Bear on the Isle of Wight cliffs beside The Needles and the Lighthouse.

The photo demonstrates how the everchanging light on the cliffs can evoke unexpected images.

A Google Search for 'The Needles polar bear' reveals even more images to enjoy.

We are always delighted to see wildlife on Milford on Sea beach.

Seals at Hurst Castle are a regular sight, but around the time of the Covid Lockdown, the seafront became a lot quieter and Chris Mabey captured this excellent photograph of a seal on Milford on Sea Beach in April 2020.

PS: I might have made these other ones up...!

Dog Friendly Beaches in Milford on Sea

Milford on Sea has a dog-friendly picture-postcard beach all year round, with spectacular views to the Isle of Wight, The Needles Lighthouse and across Christchurch Bay to the Purbeck Hill in the distance.

The extensive beachfront promenade on Hurst Road features colourful beach huts, and stretches over four miles from Hurst Castle through to Hordle Cliff beach. There are also lots of dog friendly places to eat, or get a drink, on the seafront and in the nearby village centre, as well as quaint shops to while the time away.

In July 2021 Milford on Sea beach was named the most dog-friendly in Hampshire by Vets Now. The Vets Now '50 best (and safest) beaches in the UK for dogs' guide provides a comprehensive review of pet-friendly beaches. The recommendations were chosen after taking into account: parking and access, water quality deemed high, dogs are welcome all year, and that a Vets Now pet emergency service is within driving distance.

Milford on Sea beach was also recognised for cleanliness and the facilities on offer.

To read the guide, please click here.

Milford on Sea beach is the perfect place for dog walking, whether having the pleasure of living in the village, or just visiting for a short while.

Situated on the Hampshire coast at the foot of the New Forest National Park, this pebble beach with a sandy waters edge is highly popular with dog lovers.

There are also spectacular views across to The Needles, the Isle of Wight, Christchurch Bay, and a great family walk from the beach along Hurst Spit to Hurst Castle. There are also a couple of cafĂ©s, an ice cream kiosk, a hotel, and a kids’ play area next to the beach, and it is only a shot walk to the village centre and the quaint village shops, traditional pubs, fish & chips and quality restaurants.

There are also plenty of 'dog bins' to keep the beach clean, and responsible owners are always welcome.

Melissa completes Desert Dare

Melissa Page, a Milford on Sea village resident, wanted partake in the annual Oakhaven Hospice Walk, but as she will be in Arizona on the day of the walk, Melissa thought she would complete the 26 mile walk as a 'Desert Dare'.

Melissa actually did the marathon walk a few days early because the forecast was showing cloud so had hoped it would be a bit cooler. That turned out to be false hope as it reached 101 degrees (over 38c) during the day.

Melissa has told us of her experience:

"My 26.2 mile (the extra 0.2 ensured it was a full marathon) walk took me 8 1/2 hours in total with a short break at lunchtime and as expected, it was quite a challenge. Definitely harder than I envisioned, I’m used to running and walking in the desert but over that period in the heat the undulating terrain felt especially difficult (as you a see below!). However the wonderful cause and everyone’s support kept me going.

I came across 2 snakes and of course lots of other wildlife but most of the hike was otherwise deserted - no-one else mad enough to be out in that heat. So a little scary but also quite magical, just me out in the desert.

Many thanks for those who have already donated and anyone else wants to do so if they can.

Melissa's husband, Ed joined her for 2 legs of 5 miles each so given his plantar fasciitis he did really well too.

The Oakhaven Hospice Walk can be 7, 13 or 26 miles. Melissa is a keen supporter of Oakhaven Hospice, and for the past four years has completed the 26 mile walk.

Melissa has also been running Walk for Wellness in the village since 2019.

About Walk for Wellness

Walk for Wellness was set up by Melissa Page in August 2019. She is a qualified personal trainer and ex-lawyer who has a real passion for fitness, and has completed 4 marathons and various charity challenges.

Melissa wanted to give something back to the community so she started free walking groups at 10am on Mondays and Wednesdays for anyone who would like to go along.

The aim being for people to get some exercise and simultaneously have some social company.

The exercise is usually followed by a well-earned coffee and chat. The groups tend to cover 3 to 3.5miles in the hour but different speeds can be catered for (including jogging).  She always does a warm up to start and a stretch after.

Anyone that would like to join in can just turn up at 10am on Mondays and Wednesdays outside the Needles Eye Café.

The importance of fitness is clear, and people’s reasons for walking varies, and Melissa is keen to see new members join in for fitness and fun.

To join the Walk for Wellness free walking group, or to find out more, please contact Melissa on pagetwo@hotmail.co.uk or 07712 164310.

More New Homes Planned in Manor Road

Local builder, Pennyfarthing Homes have submitted an outline planning application for up to 190 new homes on 'Swallowfield Park', land north of Manor Road, Milford on Sea, opposite Milford on Sea Primary School.

Under the proposals, the homes will comprise of a mix of one, two and three-bedroom properties, half of will be 'affordable housing'.

The application submitted to New Forest District Council (NFDC) also includes; other associated works, including landscaping, alternative natural recreational greenspace and open space, and principal vehicular accesses from Manor Road.

To view the outline planning application, or to express your view, please click here. (Ref: 23/10476). Any comments on the plans should be submitted to New Forest District Council by 9th June.

About SLAM Group

SLAM (School Lane & Manor Road) is a group of local residents who want to preserve Milford on Sea for current and future generations. SLAM believes the affordable housing should be built on brownfield sites in the village and not on the Green Belt and which surround and define Milford on Sea.
