Milford Sausage Society

When I heard about Milford Sausage Society my first thought was a celebration of the great British banger, then I thought it might actually be someone playing a prank.

But no..., the Milford Sausage Society certainly exists and it is a social gathering of Dachshunds owners that was founded by Anne Chapman and established in September 2021.

The Milford Sausage Society meet on the second Friday of the month at 2pm at the Beach House.

The group meet for a walk along the Milford on Sea cliff top followed by refreshments at the Beach House.

Currently there are eight members who join the walks intermittently, and then enjoy swapping sausage dog stories whilst having a coffee and dog treat at the Beach House.

New members and their four-legged friends are always welcome. So, if you have a Dachshund, just go along for a warm welcome.

Who knew Milford on Sea has quite a number of sausage dog enthusiasts?!

Another glowing review for Vinegar Hill Pottery

Dave & Lucy Rogers at Vinegar Hill Pottery in Milford on Sea have received yet another five star review on TripAdvisor.

A recent review reads: Brilliant day learning how to make pots, plates and bowls at Vinegar Hill. Dave is knowledgeable, patient and seems to enjoy teaching absolute beginners how to create from clay. The lunch was excellent and the brownies in the morning delicious. Whole day was calm, relaxed and enjoyable. Thank you to everyone at Vinegar Hill for a memorable day.

Sounds like a fun day to me.

Dave & Lucy run one-day and long weekend pottery courses in the village, both are non residential for anyone living nearby, or residential using their B&B accommodation. They also have Gift Vouchers which make ideal presents all year round.

There are 9 places per pottery course meaning they can tailor the classes to suit your level of skill and creativity! The courses are all based on the potter's wheel – learning the basic techniques of throwing the perfect pot.

Pottery Courses: Please click here.

Dave also sells his large range of high-fired stoneware pots, cups, plates, platters and kitchenware which are all hand-made by him on the potters wheel. All are oven proof, dishwasher proof and microwavable. He is happy to take commissions if you would like something bespoke.

About Vinegar Hill Pottery

Vinegar Hill Pottery is a small family-owned pottery and bed and breakfast that's very much a family affair. Lucy Rogers oversees the management and day-to-day running of this delightful three-room accommodation. Dave is a master potter who runs his workshop from the premises and offers tuition to aspiring ceramic artists.

Both originate from Lymington in the New Forest. Dave spent his murky college years studying ceramics at Farnham College of Art and Design and working at Wrecclesham Pottery. He graduated in Ceramics 1997 and then started up on his own. He moved to Bristol in 1999 where he set up his own work spaces at The Botany Art Studios.

With a degree in all things Latin American from Bristol University, Lucy spent time living and studying in Latin America before settling in Bristol and working for ten years for a travel company that specialised in offbeat Latin America. Her job involved travel to small, remote and unique lodges and hotels throughout the continent. This fuelled her passion for travel and gave her the experiences and know-how of what does and doesn’t work for individual, boutique accommodation, and the grounding for Vinegar Hill accommodation.

David's skill as a potter is matched only by his ability as a teacher and patience with those who are new to the kinetic delights of the potter's wheel - the ultimate hands-on experience. Regular pottery courses are open to residents and non-residents alike. There are no identikit rooms at Vinegar Hill. You can pick your accommodation from the spacious Garden Room, the secluded Hayloft or enjoy the delights of Rosie - a beautifully restored nineteenth century showman's wagon for a truly unique experience.

History of Milford on Sea Methodist Church

The Methodist Church in Milford on Sea has only been in existence since 1961. However, its origins date back to 1909 and the Church building back to 1911.

In 1909, a small group of members under the leadership of Mr T.Hames and Mr C.Spreadbury broke away from the Milford on Sea Baptist Church to form the Milford on Sea Free Church.

Their initial meetings were held behind 22 High Street, Milford on Sea, and in 1911 they moved to the current Church building at 108 High Street, Milford on Sea when it opened. The building comprised a Church with a Schoolroom behind it, a vestry, kitchen and toilet.

Over the years there have been numerous changes to the building with the most recent being the refurbishment project that was concluded in 2011 so that the building is fit for purpose.

In January 2016 the Lymington Methodist Church merged with Milford on Sea which substantially increased the membership and the opportunities for witness and service both within the church and in the local community.

The church works closely with the other churches in Milford on Sea at events such as the services on the Village Green on Good Friday, Songs of Praise at Keyhaven Quay, at Christmas late night shopping, and in the past at the annual Milford on Sea Arts & Music Festival. They also hold services at each village church during the Christians Together week and run ecumenical 'Late Lent' groups in the autumn.

Milford on Sea Methodist Church hold their gatherings on Sunday at 10:45am each week.

In addition, the church has two "At Home" discussion and support groups available for anyone to join on Monday at 7pm and Thursdays at 10:30am, as well as a weekly on-line Prayer Meeting every Tuesday morning from 8am.

Please contact Phillip at phillip.dixon@methodist.org.uk if you would like to join any of these, they are open to all, near or far, member, friend or 'just looking'.

No.64 launch Pizza Venture

Clare & Glenn, owners of popular home-style boutique, No64 in the village centre are launching a new side to their business; No64 Pizza.

Clare explains: "We are absolutely delighted to announce the first of two No64 launches for 2023, but before I do that, here’s why…..

As everyone knows the world is a different place due to Covid, the war in Ukraine and Brexit.

Glenn & I realised that, as hard as we fight for the survival of No64 Biscuit House, the game has changed, and so we have decided to diversify, and add to our business portfolio to try to ensure our survival.

Don’t worry, No64 Biscuit House isn’t going anywhere, we’ve just decided to do other things too, and we’d love your support…..

So, the first of our new ventures is No64 Pizza!

Glenn has always loved cooking, he does all of the cooking at home (lucky me!), and since meeting Tom & Laura Gozney (who, up until recently, lived in the village), founders of Gozney pizza ovens, he’s been addicted to making pizza.

Over the last few years, his progress was scuppered by Covid, Glenn’s been planning No64 Pizza, and we’re delighted to say, it’s finally about to become a reality.

Glenn’s been extensively trained in all aspects of pizza making, and the business of street pizza vending, by one of Gozney’s ambassadors, and he’s passed all of the necessary food hygiene courses. He really has been a busy bee and I’m very proud of him!

Our trailer is currently being converted (designed & styled, inside & out by me……..well, if it’s going to carry the No64 name it’s got to be the most stylish pizza trailer out there!) and will be completed / delivered next month (March) and so ready for bookings from April 1st – whoop whoop!

We’ve started a No64 Pizza section on our existing website - www.no64.co.uk/no64-pizza - I say ‘started’ as it’s something that’s going to quickly evolve, and so do stay tuned!

No64 Pizza is a mobile street pizza business and so it’s available for events (weddings, parties, festivals, etc), pop-ups, and markets – keep an eye out at Lymington’s Saturday market, you may see us there sometime soon!

So, with No64 Pizza being a business it needs bookings, and we’re hoping that’s where you come in!

If you, or anyone you know, are looking for a pizza vendor for an event, or know anyone who books mobile food businesses, please tell them about No64 Pizza for us?

You can make enquiries via our website, on the enquiries form, you can call Glenn on 07950 933466, or just pop into our shop and ask all about it.

I also mentioned we have two launches for 2023, the second is Biscuit Cottage, our new holiday let – available for booking around April/May – but I’ll tell you more about that soon as it’s not ready yet!

Thank you, in advance, for your support of all things No64!"

About the Lazy Lion (Formerly The Red Lion)

In July 2019, what had been The Red Lion for many years was renamed The Lazy Lion.

This historic listed village landmark was built as a Georgian inn. The pub was later extended into the former stables and hayloft and the front entrance has a porch with Doric pillars.

The large bar has a central open fireplace and the pub is renowned for serving hearty, home-cooked, refined and tasty breakfasts, lunches and diners.

The pub also has three en-suite B&B rooms that face the large lawned garden with a children's play area to the rear of the pub.

The extracts below are from an article published by the Milford on Sea Historical Record Society, written by Ron Kirby in 2018. To read the full articleplease click here.

The original Red Lion was opposite where the ‘Old House’ is today on the Lymington Road. It was demolished in 1787, and shortly afterwards re-opened in a cottage on its present site. By 1795 the appearance of the Red Lion was very similar to today.

Alfred Cole tells the story during the Crimean war [1854 to 1856], when some Irish Militia who were based at Hurst Castle were enjoying a pint in the Red Lion and became a bit boisterous. George Barnes asked them to behave or else he would bring in his small army. When they continued, George went outside and threw his beehive into the bar and they all fled.

The old stables have now been absorbed into the pub itself, you can still see the hayloft door at first floor level. In the 1950s and 1960s, Spreadburys had that part of the stables which was beneath the hayloft door as a hardware shop.

The Gun Inn undergoes refurbishment

The Gun Inn in Keyhaven has temporarily closed for a small refurbishment from the 6th February with the aim to reopen by Easter.

Village What's On Calendar Redesigned

The Milford on Sea What's On Calendar has been redesigned.

Having launched at the beginning of the year, it has quickly become clear that so much is happening the village that it was become difficult to present the information as we would like.

Working within the confines of the Google Calendar there is only so much that can be done on the presentation. So, we have converted to an 'Agenda format' to make it easier to read.

Once in the What's On Calendar:
  • You can change the view to weekly or monthly simply by selecting the tabs in the top right hand corners. (Use the same tabs to change back.)
  • You can also Select the Dates you want to look at by using the calendar and arrows in the the top left corner, or you can simply scroll down the page.
We have also taken the opportunity to build a new website to host the village What's On Calendar.

We hope you enjoy the new format - and find plenty to enjoy and do!
