The History of Milford on Sea Club

The Milford Social Club began in a small way at the Crown Inn (Now The Smugglers Inn).

In 1905 Mr William Talbot Agar, at the instance of Dr R Bruce, built the current clubhouse on the site of a small farm opposite. The members bought the house for £700 about 1907, and the Club surmounted the war period by aid of a subscription of £150 obtained by Mr E L Agar.

Milford Social Club is now known as Milford on Sea Club.

William Talbot Agar also made additional contributions to the village. He owned & lived at Milford House. Before Milford Crescent was put in about 1930, the Milford House grounds extended down to the High Street. W T Agar built the shops along High Street from Church Hill to the junction with Keyhaven Road (including the original Cottage Hospital).

He died in 1906 and his properties were put to auction, but his executors agreed to sell privately, on preferential terms, the Club, Hospital and the Parish Room in Barnes Lane to trustees. One of his sons, Edward Larpent Agar, took Milford House as his part of the inheritance.

Note: Information from Milford on Sea Historical Record Society Occasional Magazine Vol 4 No 4, June 1929.

Bill Gurd - Former Club Steward

The Advertiser & Times newspaper cutting above from September 1973 remembers former club steward, Bill Gurd, and he appears to have been quite a character.

Born in 1910 in Salisbury, the family moved their entire farm by special train to Downton in 1927.

Bill then went on to have a milk round with is brother for 17 years before becoming a barman at The Red Lion along with his parrot and cat. In 1966 he became the steward at Milford Social Club. At the time the club was struggling, but in his tenure he re-established the club's success until passing away in 1973. He was known to be fun loving, kind, and generous in both spirit and size.

Strange Seafood found on Milford on Sea Beach

A recent article in the Daily Echo reported on the a strange seafood that had washed up on Milford on Sea Beach.

The odd sea creatures were identified Goose Barnacles which have a long fleshy steam topped with a chalky white shell and when close it was clear they were very much alive. More were also seen on Boscombe beach.

Apparently, Goose Barnacles are considered a delicacy in Spain and Portugal and can fetch up to £80 a kilo, due to being difficult to harvest.

Recent stormy weather could explain their appearance on the beach.

Join the Milford on Sea Metal Detecting Club

Have you ever wondered what lays beneath the land surrounding Milford on Sea?

Well, local resident, Simon Wright is looking to set up the Milford on Sea Metal Detecting Club for both social fun and in the quest of finding local history and just perhaps, buried treasure!

Beginners & experienced detectorists welcome to join the adventures to see what we can be found.

Simon already has a couple of places where the club can go metal detecting close to Milford on Sea. He is also always looking for friendly local landowners who would look favourably on giving a local club permission to search their land.

Metal Detectors come in all budgets, and there are plenty which are not expensive to purchase, so giving it a go is quite accessible.

Milford on Sea was an established Saxon settlement (then called Melleford) and recorded in the Domesday Book. Also, many tales persist of smuggling in the area, so who knows what is waiting to be discovered.

Ideally members would reside within 5 miles of the village, to make it a local community activity.

If you have watched the charming and funny BBC show 'Detectorists' you will have got the feeling that it can be a fun and relaxing hobby.

We look forward to reporting on future finds as the club members unearth some local history.

Lost Item Recovery Service: During the summer the club offer a lost item recovery service free of charge for anyone unfortunate enough to misplace items on our local beach.

If you are interested in joining the club, would like more information, or if you are a local landowner happy to provide permission for the club to detect on your land.

Please contact Simon at: sjwlifts@sky.com

Milford on Sea continue to support Ukraine

Working with New Forest for Ukraine, the residents of Milford on Sea have continued to make generous donations to support hundreds of people deeply affect by the ongoing crisis in the region.

Van 77 is the latest arrival in Poznan in Poland, full of much needed and varied supplies.

Along with collecting the ongoing donations for basic needs, New Forest for Ukraine are now running a campaign to donate generators to help people through the winter months.

Organiser, John Allison explains how those than can, are able to help:

"Amazing Milford, you continue to humble us with your contributions.

Now I've got a big ask - but only from families who can afford this.

I want to find another 9 families who can each contribute £50 to our generator campaign so that we can see one being shipped over to a hospital/shelter all marked up with ‘From Milford on Sea’ - and the names of the contributing families.

Just make the donation via our website (www.newforestforukraine.co.uk), then let me know, and I will ensure ’you get your name out there’.

I will start with contributing £50 from the Allison family.

If you make such a contribution, please let me know and I will add you in.

If you have, or can, help us…it is really really appreciated. Thanks, John.

If you donate to the Generator Campaign, please add your name to John's Facebook post by clicking here, or let John know by emailing him at info@newforestforukraine.co.uk.

Meet Like Minded People at Probus

Milford on Sea Probus is a club for retired and semi-retired men. They come from a wide range of working endeavours, but whilst happily enjoying fewer responsibilities, they also sometimes are missing the social camaraderie from having colleagues. Many of them have relocated to this wonderful community at the end of their careers, so wish to form a new circle of friends.

Membership provides a network of like minded people in Milford on Sea - with many overlapping current interests; providing the opportunity to put down new roots and find new friendships. New members are always welcome.

They meet at The South Lawn Hotel on the fourth Tuesday each month, starting with coffee at 10.30, followed by a guest speaker, usually presenting on local or topical interests. Drinks and conversation are then followed by lunch.

Separate social activities are arranged by members informally, and we have an annual dinner with partners.

Local author launches The Lantern Gallery Collection

Local author and Everton based Fredrick Webb has launched a range of original framed prints for kids in The Lantern Gallery Collection.

As Fredrick explains: When placed on the bedroom wall to welcome baby home, it adds a magical start to life on planet Earth. The ‘Lantern Gallery’ will introduce the joy of painting, stimulate wonder about the wider world, and create a desire to learn.

Tiny children 'automagically' absorb and learn from their surroundings, and this gallery will give them much to think about. It will provide a ‘permanence’ that can be talked about and discussed, and I hope many mothers, with child in arms, will use this script to make up little bedroom stories.

This collection of original framed prints includes:

The Vowels Owls poster and Sorting Game - helps toddlers learn their vowels, and the three words on the back of the cards will assist speech and create the desire to read - A3 Print.

The Three R’s Dancers - have a song and a dance that makes learning fun - A3 Print.

Lord Goodwords Grit - introduces rhymes and poems, full of fun and good advice - A4 Print.

President Fox - is the ‘politician’ that cares for all the residents of Lantern County - A4 Print.

The Dowager Lady Rook - is very posh, Caugh! Caugh! Lord Grit and everyone else, adores her - A4 Print.

Banker Bee - showers using dew on the rose petals, works very hard and saves his honey. Hard work, thrift, cleanness, puts that big smile on his face - A4 Print.

Toadal Recall - the giant toad from the Sudan is given a home by President Fox. He has a very big job, it is to keep worlds water pure - A4 Print.

The ‘Happy Oyster’ & ‘Not So Happy Oyster’ - 'Happy' has a pearl in his shell, 'Not So Happy' has a pearl in his mind - A4 Print.

Miss Money Spider - is the link between Lord Grit and the Man in the Moon. They bring down the ‘Moon Dust and Grit’ that helps children remember their dreams. This combination gives them the courage to make their dreams come true - A4 Print.

Also included is:
The Happy Acorn Club Membership Certificate - an A4 Certificate which sets out many noble human qualities.

Gallery illustrations are from my ‘Grow with Grit’ series of children's books available here and are printed on thick silk card art stock with printed frames.

Framed Prints: £9.95 with Free UK P&P.

Fredrick also has a range of children's books, educational tools, toys, games and illustrations. To view the selection please click here.

Vote for Milford on Sea Bowls Club in National Award

Milford on Sea Bowls Club have been shortlisted for a Bowls England Award in the Fit for the Future category.

Their nomination is based around the successful inclusion of Paul, who has autism and is now a full and active club member.

Paul, wanted to give bowls a go and went to an Open Day at Milford on Sea Bowls Club.

The members were unaware of his Autism to begin with, but it soon became apparent that he was struggling to follow the Coaching guidance throughout his time on the green. His limited verbal communication skills also impaired.

One of Milford on Sea’s coaches had a wealth of knowledge and experience of working with people with learning difficulties, so she took over Paul’s coaching with a clear focus on his abilities and not his disabilities.

The coach now delivers one-to-one coaching sessions with Paul, ensuring every stage is adapted to his own individual learning needs. A short talk was given to all members about Autism and Paul’s individual needs to ensure more understanding of some of his difficulties. Raising awareness amongst our membership was critical to the success of Paul’s inclusion.

Initially, Paul regularly played in the club roll ups with the one-to-one support of a few key supportive members, plus the combined support and understanding of all playing members. He even entered a competition, succeeding in winning his first round. Paul has also successfully engaged with the club’s special bowls and social events. As a club, Milford on Sea took pride in ensuring that every bowls event at the club was accessible to Paul to ensure full inclusion.

Paul is now a full member of Milford on Sea Bowls Club and participates regularly in roll ups, competitions and social events. Considerable improvements can be seen in Paul’s social and communication skills, which highlights the benefits of playing bowls in an inclusive manner.

To vote for Milford on Sea Bowls Club, please click here and scroll down to the voting link in the Fit for the Future section. (Strangely, It appears that you need to vote in the 'Unsung Hero' category before being able to vote for Milford on Sea Bowls Club in the 'Fit for the Future' category.)

Voting closes at 3pm on Thursday 19th January 2023.

The decision about who wins is down to a public vote, so they need your help!
