NFDC announce Coast Protection Action

New Forest District Council (NFDC) have announced that they will be carrying out Coast Protection Maintenance Works on Milford on Seafront during September & October 2024.

A rock revetment is to be installed in front of the seawall at the eastern end of the beach huts, along with groyne repairs and a beach recharge to the west.

Work will be undertaken in two phases over an eight-week period (approximately 4-weeks per phase), subject to suitable weather and tides.

Phase 1: Work will commence w/c August 26th 2024 (after the bank holiday weekend).

Rock deliveries are expected to begin w/c 2nd September 2024. In total 1,100t of rock will be delivered to the compound. Rock will then be transferred between the compound and the beach.

Once transferred, rock will be placed on the beach to form a simple structure in front of the seawall along the two eastern bays in front of the beach huts. This will provide additional protection from wave attack along the toe of the seawall, where beach levels are low. These works will also include some rock repairs to several of the timber groynes in the vicinity.

Phase 2:
Once the rock works are complete, work will then start on the timber maintenance and beach recharge.

The beach recharge will consist of 2,500 tons of shingle material being deposited in 3 groyne bays at the western end of the promenade (opposite the toilet block). These groyne bays have been subject to significant erosion recently, resulting in the access steps being closed. The additional material will help to restore levels, so that the beach better dissipates wave energy and protects the seawall, as well as improving access.

In addition to the beach recharge, work will be undertaken on the timber groyne located adjacent to the beach access steps. The groyne will be strengthened with additional timber piles. Groynes are an important element of the beach at Milford-on-Sea as they control longshore drift and help maintain the beach.

Mandy bakes Celebration Cake for Beaulieu National Motor Museum

Talented Milford on Sea celebration cake maker, Mandy Black was recently commissioned by the Beaulieu National Motor Museum to design and bake a cake to celebrate the 50 Year Anniversary of the Beaulieu Monorail.

Of course, being Mandy, she couldn’t go with a simple monorail cake. After much planning and some support from another cake maker, Dawn Butler of Dinkydoodle Designs, the 3D cake design was created.

You can view how Mandy constructed the cake by clicking here.

Lord Montague was delighted, and he and Mandy chatted about how it had been built, and how Mandy was at Beaulieu the day the Monorail opened 50 years ago.

In Summer 1974, The Wombles reached number three in the charts with 'Remember You're A Womble'. They also opened the cutting-edge Beaulieu Monorail, and they were back 50 years later to celebrate the anniversary.

If you would a celebration cake made, you can contact Mandy on 07914 586441 or at elmsleighcakes1@aol.com.

---------------------------------
About Amanda Black Cakes

Mandy founded her company in Milford on Sea as Elmsleigh Cakes in 2011.

Mandy's journey so far has taken her from being a computer operations manager who started making cakes for her kids, and on to making cakes for everyone, including our royal family.

Mandy makes impressive celebration cakes, such as wedding cakes, and cakes for a birthday, anniversary, engagement, baby shower, and other special events.

In 2022 (and again in 2023), Mandy received worthy recognition of her talents as a baker and cake artist when she was recognised as one of the Top Three Cake Makers in the New Forest.

In summer 2023, Mandy was invited to be a Cake Judge at the New Forest & Hampshire County Show.

In September 2023, she attended a week-long intensive course led by Paul Bradford, holder of the Disciples D’Escoffier award, and one of the world's most respected cake designers. Here she honed her already exceptional cake-making skills.

During the same year, Mandy rebranded her company to Amanda Black Cakes to reflect the individuality of her ever-evolving cake designs.

In November 2023, Mandy was personally invited by Paul Bradford to feature her cakes in his display at Cake International, the biggest cake show in the world at Birmingham NEC.

At the show, Mandy stood shoulder to shoulder with the big names in cake design from around the world. People that she looked up to, and whose books she bought when first starting creating amazing cakes.

In March 2024, Mandy won the Cakeflix Cake of the Month competition, this was quickly followed in May 2024, when four of her cakes were featured in an article in the Your Hampshire and Dorset Wedding Magazine.

In August 2024, she was commissioned by the Beaulieu National Motor Museum to design and bake a cake to celebrate the 50 Year Anniversary of the Beaulieu Monorail.

In November 2024, Mandy's Charles Dickens Christmas Cake design won the Silver Prize at Cake International.

To see more of Mandy's amazing cake designs, please visit her current website at: www.elmsleighcakes.co.uk.

The White House Hospital Patient Memories

The White House Hospital on Milford on Sea seafront accommodated many children suffering with TB over the years.

Having published articles in the past, we have now gathered an interesting history of memories from children who were patients in The White House's time as a hospital.

Having been built in 1902 as a summer seaside residence for the Walker-Munro family. The White House went on the become a hospital for TB.

Looking at the buildings history, from 1938, The White House became a hospital, specifically for adult male tuberculosis (TB).

At the beginning of WW2, the building was requisitioned by the War Office for military use. After the war, the hospital reopened for adult male TB sufferers until the NHS took it over in 1948.

Three years later, it became one of the first hospitals to cater specifically for child TB sufferers and ran as a children's hospital for TB until 1983.

The building then fell into disrepair, until in 1999, when Colten Developments Ltd completed a full restoration and conversion into private homes.

This document will share many memories of children that spent time there as patients. Please click here or the button below.
