Fastnet Race sinking near The Needles

The Rolex Fastnet Race took place last Saturday 22nd July, and a number of hardy souls fought the stormy weather to watch from Hurst Castle, Milford on Sea beach or the cliff top.

The race however proved to be anything other than smooth sailing.

This biennial offshore yacht race is one of the most famous and challenging yacht races in the world, with around 400 yachts of various sizes and classes taking part.

It is also one of those rare events where weekend sailors can truly take on the professionals.

The race is a 605 mile sail from Cowes, Isle of Wight, to Cherbourg, via the Fastnet Rock off southern Ireland and back to Plymouth.

This year's race proved to be a very busy day for the Yarmouth RNLI and HM Coastguard, with multiple call-outs to sailors in distress. At around 5pm, the RNLI crew were called to the shifting sands and shingles of Dolphin Bank, west of The Needles Lighthouse. The weather had force of six / seven winds, waves of three to four metre swells in the rough sea, and poor visibility.

On arriving, the Yarmouth RNLI all-weather lifeboat found the devastating sight of a sunken vessel leaving the two crew in an inflatable life raft awaiting rescue.

The RNLI successfully transferred both casualties back to Yarmouth Harbour where an ambulance awaited their arrival to treat minor injuries sustained whilst evacuating the sinking vessel onto their life raft.

This year the fastest boat completed the Fastnet course in just 28 hours, the slowest took over six days.

The RNLI had to contend with four dismastings, illness on board, and of course the sinking yacht.

Another Group forms over Manor Road Development

A group of residents local to Manor Road in Milford on Sea, have come together to form an additional group focussed on engaging with NFDC and local councillors to discuss the proposed new development of 190 houses north of Manor Road.

The group are called; 'Milford Residents for Sustainable Development', and are working closely with the SLAM (School Lane and Manor Road) group to try to ensure what they consider the best outcome for the village.

-----------------------------------------
PRESS RELEASE
Milford Residents for Sustainable Development

Milford Residents, We need you!!

The majority of Milford residents may be aware of the plans by New Forest District Council (NFDC) relating to building additional homes across the New Forest. These plans are captured in the NFDC Local Plan

Currently there is a huge development in underway in Fordingbridge, significant building projects planned for Hordle and a number of larger (20+) developments being proposed in Everton.

For Milford on Sea, following the development of 40+ houses in an area now known as The Swifts close to the school, the fields in Manor Road have been designated as land for housing development. Earlier this year an outline planning proposal was submitted in relation to building 190 dwellings across the fields in Manor Road. The link to the planning proposal is here: 23/10476.

Following its submission, there have been 247 objections raised to the development and this planning proposal goes to the planning committee in Autumn 2023. The link appears to be still be open for additional comments to be added.

This proposal is the single biggest thing to happen to Milford on Sea for over 50 years in terms of increased density and capacity to the village. It will have a significant impact on Milford’s already stretched resources. There has to be a recognition that development on this site is inevitable but at this scale it would be disastrous. (The Local plan mentioned above identifies the Manor Road site suitable for 110 houses). As a result, a group of residents local to Manor Road have come together to form a group focussed on engaging with NFDC and local councillors to engage and discuss the proposed development.

We are calling ourselves Milford Residents for Sustainable Development. The group has already met our local elected councillors from NFDC and will be meeting with the planning officer for this proposal. Our intent is to engage, discuss, raise questions and share concerns. The group is also working closely with the SLAM group to ensure the best outcome for the village.

To all residents of Milford, your involvement is critical. We want you! - If you would like to get involved then please contact milford.residents@outlook.com. Everyone is welcome.

The key concerns relating to the development are as follows listed in no particular order:

1. Access. The proposed development will create 3 additional access points onto Manor Road. Traffic issues are already well known and were highlighted in the local plan from the early 2000’s. Parked cars create a single lane all day and represents a danger to children walking to and from school.

2. Poor quality consultation and lack of subsequent response to their proposals.

3. Environmental impact and damage. This development will lower the water table, will damage to the veteran Oak trees that line Manor Road through root damage by heavy construction vehicles. The sheer volume of housing will create a negative impact on the wildlife corridor that exists around Lymington Road, Manor Road and Barnes Lane.

4. Density. This development will significantly create an increase in population density

5. Traffic. Potential for a few hundred cars to be added into local area on already busy roads.

6. Concerns relating quality of design and layout. The local plan states very clearly that new developments must be kept in keeping with local character and retain the characteristics of the New forest area. The currently published designs do not adhere to this requirement.

7.Milford housing requirements. Within the plan, the site was designated for 110 houses which is in line for the current need for the village in terms of affordable housing but this proposal is in massively excess of that requirement.

8. Impact on local infrastructure and services. We already know the school is full and the GP surgery is at capacity. The roads are already busy and will only get busier.

9. House Purchases. If there is a failure to prevent new homes being sold as second homes and as buy to let investments then the local housing issues do not get addressed.

10. Failure to provide the lower cost housing. If the new houses are not affordable then what is the point? We know through the building of the Swifts that the developer reneged on their Affordable housing commitment once the planning proposal was approved.

Concert for Tony raises over £1300

The recent free musical extravaganza 'Concert for Tony' raised £1331.60 for Oakhaven Hospice in memory of Tony Hales.

Tony was a long time member of Total Voice Choir, Milford Choralia, West Gallery Choir and a regular volunteer at the Community Centre (Now The Bridge). He was a big part of Village life – someone who would always say ‘Yes’ and do whatever he could to help. Tony bore his illness with great spirit and his strength and character were an inspiration which is why we want to make this an event to honour his memory.

The concert was a celebration of Tony's life, and included many of his favourite songs

Everyone was invited to enjoy an afternoon of uplifting music with beautiful harmonies and a touch of humour.

Grateful thanks go to All Saints Church and Terry Bufton for their help in organising this event.

Shieldhall Steamship coming past Hurst Castle on Sunday

The Shieldhall Steamship, the largest working steamship in Britain, will be passing Hurst Castle on Sunday (30th July) as part of their cruise to the Needles. Be sure to look out for it and it's another great reason to visit Hurst Castle.

A member of the National Historic Fleet she serves as a sea going tribute to Britain’s maritime heritage.

Operated by a team of dedicated volunteers, you too can experience the golden age of steam by booking on an excursion or visiting her in Southampton.

Trips are described as: As part of your Shieldhall experience, see the impressive engine room with its original steam engines at work and the bridge, with its traditional instruments and gleaming brass work; admire the ship’s steam assisted steering gear (similar to that used on Titanic); talk to the Captain and our crew and listen to the commentary as you pass the sights of Southampton Water and the Solent.

You are Invited to come along to the Free Sign Language Open Day

Please make a diary note to come along to a free Sign Language Open Day on Friday 8th September from 2pm to 7pm at The Bridge. (Formerly Milford on Sea Community Centre).

The cafe will be open, so please just walk in anytime for a chat. Entry is free and everyone is invited.

This informal Open Day will give simple tips on communicating with deaf people, or those with hearing impairment.
It will also give an insight into how British Sign Language helps deaf people communicate with their silent world.
------------------------------------------

To see Rose's Dance
please click here
Few that saw it, will ever forget the stunning and highly emotional dance by Rose Ayling-Ellis, as she perfectly danced in silence on Strictly Come Dancing.

Rose is a big supporter of British Sign Language. She has been deaf since birth and uses BSL herself to communicate with the world.

She & Giovanni became Strictly Come Dancing Champions in 2021, during which they performed 'Silent Symphony', without doubt, the best ever dance on this long-running and much loved show.

------------------------------------------

Free Sign Language Open Day

Friday 8th September from 2pm to 7pm at The Bridge

It is likely that we all know someone who struggles with their hearing. A visit to the open day would give you valuable tips on the best way to communicate with them.

Everyone is welcome to pop in to this informal afternoon, whether as an individual, business or organisation.

Just imagine the smiles if you could communicate better with any deaf people you know or meet.

------------------------------------------

Deaf Awareness Course: Introduction to British Sign Language

For those that might be interested, after the Open Day, it is planned to hold an Introduction to British Sign Language Course in the village later this year.

This course will be ideal for individuals, businesses, groups or organisations.

The aim is for you to be able to communicate with deaf people, and this valuable and caring skill can enhance the lives of those you meet who are unable to hear the world around us.

We are fortunate to have Nancy Weatherson running the course, she is a qualified Deaf Communications Professional living in Milford on Sea, and she supports deaf and hard of hearing people throughout the UK.

In 2022 the BSL Act was passed, meaning that British Sign Language has now been recognised as a language of England, Wales and Scotland in its own right. This is a wonderful success for the deaf community.

Nancy works closely with Deaf Professionals and together they have created a Deaf Awareness Course designed to introduce some useful communication tactics to you as an individual, or your group.

If this is something that you believe that you will benefit from and enjoy, now is your chance to learn something new that will really make a difference.

If you are interested in finding out more about the Open Day, or the Deaf Awareness Course, please contact Nancy at: nancy@feelhear.co.uk. There is no obligation if you register your interest.

-----------------------------------------------------

About Nancy

Nancy has over 20 years' experience in Hotel Management where she completed her CIPD – HR Masters qualification. This is also where she started her love for British Sign Language when she passed BSL L1 back in 2006. She did this to enable her to communicate with deaf guests that visited her hotel.
