Community Defibrillator at Milford Early Years Centre

The village have six defibrillators dotted around the village, and the one outside was installed thanks to the parents at Milford Early Years Centre.

The Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) at the Milford on Sea children's nursery raised £1,334 to provide the village with an additional lifesaving defibrillator.

The money was raised through a series of fundraising initiatives that included a raffle with prizes donated by local businesses, a quiz night and additional raffle hosted by The Lazy Lion pub before it closed, and a Christmas hospitality event.

The Early Years Group then paid for the electrical work to install the lifesaving kit and has also pledged to maintain it.

The defibrillator is fitted to the wall outside Milford Early Years Centre at The Old Bank House on the village’s west side, and is for public use. In an emergency, users can simply dial 999 to obtain a code that will unlock the equipment’s casing.

L to R: Eliza Wright, Lucie Kempton-Brown,
Lorna Batteson, Holly Wallis, Nicola Priest.

PTA member Lorna Batteson said: “Milford on Sea has a tremendous community spirit, and we were really thrilled to see such a surge in support from local people and local businesses for our cause.”

The Early Years Group area manager Eliza Wright said: “We are really proud of our nursery PTA’s efforts in getting this initiative up and running.

“Meanwhile, the generosity local people left us in no doubt that The Early Years Group should contribute by financing the defibrillator’s installation.”

MP's Future of Hurst Spit Survey

Sir Desmond Swayne, MP for New Forest West, is running a short, confidential survey to gather constituent’s opinions on the Environment Agency’s management of Hurst Spit to help shape local policy responses.

As the Hurst Spit to Lymington Strategy currently stands, the draft plan is to maintain the existing shape of Hurst Spit for the next 10 to 20 years. After which, active management would be reduced, eventually allowing the shingle formation to return to a more natural form.

In other words, changing from a 'Hold the Line' strategy to a 'Managed Retreat'.

Learn British Sign Language in a Fun Course

Deaf Awareness Course: Introduction to British Sign Language

After three very successful Introduction to British Sign Language Courses in the village, another Ten Week Course is due to start:

Monday 31st March 2025 until Monday 23rd June 2025 from 5pm to 6pm.
(Breaks on 2 Bank Holiday Mondays). Held in Milford on Sea Village Hall/Library in Park Road, Milford on Sea, SO41 0QH.

The aim is for you to be able to communicate with deaf people, and this valuable and caring skill can enhance the lives of those you meet who are unable to hear the world around us.

We are fortunate to have Nancy Weatherson running the course, she is a qualified Deaf Communications Professional living in Milford on Sea, and she supports deaf and hard of hearing people throughout the UK.

In 2022 the BSL Act was passed, meaning that British Sign Language has now been recognised as a language of England, Wales and Scotland in its own right. This is a wonderful success for the deaf community.

Nancy works closely with Deaf Professionals and together they have created a Deaf Awareness Course designed to introduce some useful communication tactics to you as an individual, or your group.

If this is something that you believe that you will benefit from and enjoy, now is your chance to learn something new that will really make a difference.

Course Cost: £130 in advance for the whole course | Bring a Friend: £115 each.

If you are interested in finding out more about the Deaf Awareness Course, please contact Nancy at: nancy@feelhear.co.uk. There is no obligation if you register your interest.

About Nancy

Nancy has over 20 years' experience in Hotel Management where she completed her CIPD – HR Masters qualification. This is also where she started her love for British Sign Language when she passed BSL L1 back in 2006. She did this to enable her to communicate with deaf guests that visited her hotel.

Based in Milford on Sea with partner Jon, they are huge ambassadors of the deaf world raising awareness with charity events and deaf socials. Nancy travels regularly to clients in Bristol, London, Fleet and beyond.

Beach Huts have licenses terminated

A recent article by Roz Waters in the Advertiser & Times has revealed that 46 beach huts at Hordle Cliff are in the process of having their licenses terminated by the New Forest District Council.

The beach huts are individually owned, but the land on which they sit is owned by NFDC. So, if the NFDC withdraws permission the owner is responsible for removing the beach hut. Prior to this, the huts had a value of around £25,000 each.

Over recent years many beach huts have already been destroyed due to violent storms and coastal erosion.

Less than a year ago 25 unsafe and damaged huts were removed by NFDC.

Under the Hurst Spit to Lymington Strategy, there are no plans to protect this strip of Milford on Sea coastline. www.hurstspit2lymington.co.uk

As a result, local resident, Mark Jardine has proposed an ambitous plan to try to do something about protecting this area of beach. To read more, please click here.
