Milford Tennis and Squash Club are hoping to get back to playing squash in bubbles of 6 players from 17th May (subject to the UK government).

The club was founded in 1927 and offers Tennis, Squash, Racketball, Table Tennis,  Mahjong, Bridge  and many other social activities to enjoy with friends or play competitively.

Typically the club has around 650 members and caters for players young and old and of all standards. Members can compete in local and national leagues or simply play for fun.

History of Milford Tennis & Squash Club

The Milford Country Club was formed in 1927 and became a member of the L.T.A, in 1935, purchasing the freehold of its 1.8 acre site in Lucerne Road in 1945. In 1936 the first squash court was built on the site and in 1950 the Squash Club, previously a separate club, merged with the Country Club. The club originally had three grass courts and four hard courts and during these early years, the members largely played social tennis with a limited number of matches being arranged with other local clubs. More recently, bridge, mahjong and table tennis have also become important activities enjoyed by club members.

In the late 1990s, the club changed its focus to include competitive tennis, thus providing opportunities for members of all abilities to participate in internal tournaments as well as in matches with neighbouring clubs. In 2001 the club changed its name to The Milford Tennis and Squash club and subsequently obtained the services of a full-time tennis professional.

All the courts have been resurfaced in recent years and the Club now possesses seven high quality artificial grass courts which are much admired by visiting players. Floodlights were installed on three of the courts in 2005 and two further courts in 2013.

In 2007/8, the Club carried out major improvements to the clubhouse which included providing new changing rooms, toilets and kitchen facilities as well as refurbishing the whole of the premises. The full cost of this was £140,000, all of which was met from club funds. Unfortunately, on Boxing Day 2009, a devastating fire destroyed approximately 50% of the club premises sparing only the new kitchen, showers and squash courts. In a little over a year, the Clubhouse was totally rebuilt using the money from the insurance claim, with an additional £29,000 from Club funds being used to completely transform the Clubhouse.

The new Clubhouse was formally opened in February 2011 by Mark Cox, the former Davis Cup tennis player, and today the Club is fortunate to have a large function room, and lounge bar capable of hosting events for up to 60 people. Improvements continue to be made to this day. In recent years they have included a new Club entrance, pathways, parking bays and covered gazebo.

Children's book author moves into village

Jean Maye has recently moved into Milford on Sea after several years of wishing to become part of the community. Jean is a multi-award-winning screenwriter, a best-selling author of social care books for children, and she has also recently written her first children’s fiction book 'The Dolls House'.

The Doll’s House is for children primarily aged between 6-11 years but easily has a window of one year below and above this age range. Interestingly, since being published, the book has attracted even a larger age range – including adults!

The Dolls House is about an adventurous 8-year-old girl who uncovers a dark mystery in her new adoptive home. Unable to ignore the spooky events that follow she takes on the investigation.

The appeal of children’s fantasy comes from Jean’s childhood love for the works of Enid Blyton, C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien (Who used to holiday in Milford on Sea!)

Having formerly worked in this important field much of her writing taps into real-life issues in one way or another, whether this be writing for adults or for children.

Jean’s future plans is to make her first book part of a trilogy with 'Treasures Bright' being the next one planned for the summer.

To buy or read the reviews for The Dolls House, please click here. If you would like a signed copy once you have bought the book from Amazon, then post or pop your book to Jean with a note of who you want the book dedicated to. The book can then be collected the follow day or posted back if you supply a stamped addressed envelope (£1.86 plus). She would do this wearing cotton gloves so to keep ‘Covid’ free.

The Beach House reopens sooner than expected

The Beach House have announced:

"With the weather looking rather good over the next few weeks, we have decided to open our outdoor area a bit earlier than we had originally planned to. So from Thursday next week (29th April) at 5pm, please feel free to stop by for a bite to eat or a drink.

Tables from 29th April until 20th May will be available strictly for walk-ins, but if you want to make an advance booking for a later date, you can do this online for any date after 20th May.

Now – onto the most important thing. Who’s coming with you to the pub?"

About The Beach House

The Grade II listed Beach House was built in 1897 for Alexander Siemens (who created the world’s first public electricity supply) as a summer house for his family.

Formerly known as Westover Hall, Hall & Woodhouse renamed it ‘The Beach House’ in 2012, to reflect how the Siemens family had always used it.

Built in the Arts and Crafts style it was judged the most luxurious residence on England’s south coast and indeed the imposing stained glass windows portray Pre-Raphaelite scenes from the “The Enchanted Wood”. With fantastic raised patio areas and extensive gardens the pub also boasts over 200 outside covers and affords great views across to The Needles and the Isle of Wight (on a clear day of course!).

Have your say! Consultation on open space land at School Lane

Last call for views in the consultation for the public open space on MOS1 (land north of School Road). Closing date is 30th April.

-----------------------------------------------------------
Milford-on-Sea Parish Council will shortly formally adopt the new public open space north of School Lane when the housing has been completed. No decisions have been made for this land except those made at the public enquiry for small scale play equipment to be provided for younger children at the southern end of the site as well as 8 small allotment plots and a car parking area at the northern point of the site.

The Parish Council considers it is essential that all interested residents and groups have a full opportunity to express their views as to how they consider the remaining land can best be used. To this end, the Parish Council is conducting this full consultation beginning on 15th March which will run to the end of April. The Parish Council will then set out proposals for a final period of consultation in the light of the views that have been gathered.

The Parish Council recognises that there may be strongly held and differing views within the community. The aim of the Council is to ensure all residents have a full opportunity to be consulted, to express their view and to consider the views of others.

As you can also see by the dimensions, the land is of reasonable size and the Parish Council is keen to find out from the community what additional facilities might be added to make this parcel of land beneficial to the whole community.

There are currently no limitations to what may be considered, including sport activities, additional equipment, long term projects, wildlife areas, additional planting & landscaping. Therefore, the Parish Council would like to know your thoughts and aspirations.

If you would like to inform the Parish Council of any ideas you may have on how best to utilise this community asset then complete the quick online survey by clicking here.

Plans are also available on the Parish Council website:

South Lawn preparing for 17th May

Tim at South Lawn has given us an update of his plans from 17th May, and has shared a copy of South Lawn's latest Home Delivery Menu.

"This 5 week of outside trading with The Outside Inn is very exciting but we are also looking forward to the 17th May.  We are already focusing on menus and what we can offer.  If we do move to the next step on 17th May which hopefully we will, the rule of 6 moves inside and we can have guests staying overnight for leisure, hooray!  Furthermore I think the biggest step forward for our local community is that we will then be able to have groups of up to 30 people meeting outside.

The Outside Inn will have served its purpose by then and we have designed a specific COVID secure outside area to accommodate groups of up to 30.  This facility will be directly linked to the restaurant allowing guests to be able to use the hotel facilities with some level of normality and even a little drizzle won't cause us a problem.  So if anybody wishes to get a group together for a lunch or cream tea we are taking bookings for "The Pavilion".  The Pavilion is a COVID secure semi private area within our marquee accessed directly from the hotels restaurant The Cedar Tree.

As the requirement for planning permission for temporary structures has been waived for the remainder of 2021 this will stay in place after the 21st of June when further lifting of COVID restrictions is planned.  Hopefully!

From 21st June our 15 monthly clubs can start meeting again in our function suite and we have redesigned how we will operate to continue to be COVID considerate.  Most of the clubs which includes 11 Probus clubs, Milford and District Ladies, Past Rotarians and 2 Rotary Clubs have contacted us to confirm that they will be returning.

More good news is that The New Forest Big Band is intending to return to their regular monthly slot at the hotel from July.

There really is so much to look forward to over the coming months and we are keeping our fingers crossed that everyone follows the rules and we keep on track."

Enjoy village eateries on the village green

Milford on Sea Parish Council has agreed that village restaurants, bars & cafés can have mobile seating and menu boards on the village green this summer until 1st November.

A proposal was made to the Parish Council by Milford on Sea born villager, Jon Crouch, who owns the Cave Wine Bar, and also on behalf of The Wash House, Paddle on the Green and La Perle.

The plan is to help village businesses who have struggled to trade over the pandemic to recover some losses and to re-establish themselves in the community.

At the same time consideration has been made to ensure the green is kept tidy and that there remains sufficient space for people to meet socially for relaxation, a catch up or picnic.

Roz Waters explains more in the Advertiser & Times.

WI ending Book Exchange

Milford on Sea WI have been operating the telephone box on the village green during the latest lockdown as a successful book exchange. We have been asked to pass on this message:

"The general feeling is that the book exchange has been a great success and a valuable resource for the village and the surrounding area.

As from 19th April, we will be clearing it out and ask that no more books etc. are left there please.

With the Community library open in Park Road on Tuesday from 2 to 4pm and Friday from 10 to 12noon and with charity shops open, it is felt that this resource is no longer required.

Thank you to everyone for your support."

Have you discovered the Community Meadow in Milford on Sea

Sometimes we all like to visit an oasis of peace and calm for relaxation. Well, did you know that the village has a Community Meadow for all to enjoy?

The Community Meadow was opened by Milford on Sea Parish Council with a village picnic on Saturday 22nd June 2019.

If recalled correctly, the meadow land was donated to the Parish Council as a legacy from a generous Milford on Sea resident for the benefit of the local community.

The Community Meadow has benches on which to sit as you enjoy the surroundings, and is accessed through a metal gate in a wall in All Saints’ churchyard.

A nice idea of a new place to discover and enjoy as the weather improves.
