Additional Sea Defence Work starting soon

Milford on Sea is to see a bolstering of the sea defences in coming weeks, with rocks being placed in front of the seawall, groynes being repaired, and shingle being added to increase beach levels.

New Forest District Council has announced that the first stage of works is to include the installation of 1,100 tonnes of rock, known as a rock revetment.

The rocks will provide coastal protection from waves along the toe of the seawall, at the eastern end of the beach huts, where beach levels are low. This will help dissipate wave energy and allow shingle to settle more easily. Several of the timber groynes in the area will also be repaired.

The site on Hurst Road will be set up from 27th August 2024, with rock to be delivered to the beach at the beginning of September.

The second stage of the works will include 2,500 tonnes of shingle being delivered to the beach from trucks to improve beach levels and help further protect the seawall ahead of the winter. This is expected to take place in October 2024.

Cllr Geoffrey Blunden, portfolio holder for environment and sustainability, said:

"This coastal frontage has in recent years experienced a continued increase in winter storms, with the winter of 2023/24 seeing a record number of storms impacting on our vulnerable coastline. This has resulted in the continued lowering of beach levels, reducing the level of protection to coastal defences and assets.

This piece of maintenance work is vitally important to provide protection to an aging seawall and supports the Shoreline Management Policy of 'hold the line'. This maintenance work is also in line with the Christchurch Bay and Harbour FCERM Strategy that is currently going through the Council to be adopted."

Eddie Beach signs season-long loan at Crawley Town

Having signed professional terms with Premier League Chelsea FC from Southampton FC in June 2022, Milford on Sea goalkeeper, Eddie Beach has just signed a season-long loan to play for Crawley Town in Football League One for the 2024/25 season.

Eddie spent this summer training with the Chelsea FC Senior Squad and was included on the club's 2024 Tour of the USA.

Still just 20, this loan spell continues Eddie's career experience as he works towards making the Chelsea FC first-team in the Premier League.

---------------------
About Eddie Beach - Professional Footballer

Milford on Sea raised Eddie Beach was born on 9th October 2003, and he is a goalkeeper who signed professional terms with Chelsea FC from Southampton FC in June 2022.

Eddie first played football for Milford on Sea Youth FC,. and his football career has impressively developed from the days when he was a Priestlands School pupil.

In 2013, at nine years old, Eddie joined the New Forest Football Academy, whilst also playing for Milford on Sea Youth FC.

He regularly attended their holiday football courses in Woodside Park in Lymington. During the New Forest Football Academy’s first fixture against Arsenal Soccer School, he scored a screamer of a free-kick while playing a commanding role in midfield.

In 2015, he became one of the first players to join the New Forest Football Academy’s newly established Elite Development Centres.

At the time, Eddie was playing as a talented midfielder and he represented Southampton Schoolboys at county level.

Towards the end of his time at the Academy, Eddie had started to try his hand at playing in goal. Such was his talent on the ball and his impressive height, he proved a highly effective goalkeeper. Soon after, his dad, James, arranged for Eddie to attend an open trial for goalkeepers at Bournemouth FC.

After that, it was not long before Premier League scouts came to watch Eddie play in goal for Milford on Sea Youth FC, and at the New Forest Football Academy.

In 2019, he was invited to join the Southampton FC Academy.

In 2020, Covid hit and the enforced lockdowns kicked in. Eddie used this time to make himself stronger and to learn more about his craft as a goalkeeper.

Not long after, Eddie was offered a two-year Academy Scholarship with The Saints. Hs first season was affected by a knee injury. His second season saw Eddie and his Southampton FC teammates crowned champions of the U18 Premier League South. He also went on to play a full 90 minutes in the U18 Premier League Final against Manchester City at St Mary’s Stadium in front of 13,000 fans.

Whilst at Southampton FC, he was regularly called up to international duty with Wales U19's, receiving caps while playing in the U19 European Championship Qualifiers.

He then went on to gain more international caps for Wales at Youth and Under 21 level.

Not forgetting his roots, during this time, he returned to support the coaches and upcoming football talent at the New Forest Football Academy’s summer courses.

In 2022 Eddie signed contract terms with Chelsea FC after impressing during his time with fellow Premier League side Southampton FC.

On arriving, he trained regularly with the Chelsea first-team goalkeepers and he was involved in seven first-team matchday squads. He also featured regularly for Chelsea's U21's Development Squad and in the first half of the 2022/23 season he made14 appearances.

In order to gain matchday experience, in January 2023 he was loaned to Chelmsford City FC in the National League for the 2022/23 season,

He made 21 first team appearances for Chelmsford City FC and achieved Man of the Match Awards. During his loan period, Eddie continued to train with the Chelsea senior team during the week.

In February 2023, a really interesting, open and honest article was published in 'Football London', where Eddie gives a frank interview on his journey from Sunday league football, both outfield, as well as between the posts. Click here to read article.

On his return to Chelsea FC for the 2023/24 season, Eddie was rewarded with the No.50 squad number, and on Friday 25th August 2023 he was on the substitutes bench for the Premiership match against Luton Town.

He continued to play for Chelsea the U23 team, making 11 appearances in the first half of the 2023/24 season, as well as being named on the bench for several first-team squad fixtures.

Later in the 2023-24 season he also had a brief 5 match loan spell at Gateshead FC, but his time with the Tynesider's was interrupted due to illness.

In the Summer of 2024, Eddie spent the time pre-season training with the Chelsea FC Senior Squad and was included on the club's 2024 Tour of the USA.

The 2024/25 season saw Eddie join Crawley Town in Football League One for a season long loan.

MILFORD ON SEA FAMOUS FOOTBALLERS

Milford on Sea has also has had some other famous professional footballers as village residents in the past:

David Peach: (born 21 January 1951) is a former professional footballer, who played at left back for Southampton FC.

He was a key player in the FA Cup Final winning Southampton FC side in 1976 and also named in the 1976–77 Second Division PFA Team of the Year.

In 1979 he played and scored for Southampton in their losing appearance in the League Cup Final. Later that year he became the highest scoring full-back in the history of the Football League.

Michael Keeping: Southampton FC and Fulham FC professional footballer in the 1920/30's, and manager of Real Madrid 1948 to 1950.

A John Player cigarette card from 1928 read:
Michael Keeping, who has proved a worthy successor to such notable players as Parker and Titmuss in the Southampton defence, had already received recognition by the F.A. selectors in being picked for International trial matches, and the greater honour of an International cap should not long be delayed. A native of Milford-on-Sea (Hants), Keeping played for the local club prior to joining Southampton in 1920, and when promoted to the senior side he made his position secure. He was a member of the F A. team which maintained an unbeaten record when touring Canada in 1926.

He went on to manage the giant Real Madrid from January 1948 to October 1950. During this time Real Madrid won the Copa Eva Duarte de Perón beating Valencia 3-1 in 1948.

Fred Keeping: Father to Michael above, was not a footballer, but he did win an Olympic silver medal in the 12 hour cycling race. He also founded Fred Keeping & Sons, a business selling & servicing cars and bicycles.

The building still exists, and still trades servicing cars in Milford on Sea village centre. Now known as 'The Garage', todays signage harks back to the days when the big sign above Fred's door simply read 'Garage'.

About the New Forest Social Deaf Club

The New Forest Social Deaf Club is held the First Tuesday of Every Month from 5pm to 8pm in The Cave, entry is free, and everyone is invited, hard of hearing, or not.

This informal social gathering is attended by friendly people from the village and across the New Forest.

This concept was originally founded in February 2024 as a direct result of FeelHear’s first 10 week Introduction to British Sign Language (BSL) Course in Milford on Sea village.

Organiser Nancy explains: "When our first Introduction to BSL Course completed in December 2023 the delegates asked ‘what’s next? It was decided that we needed a comfortable, safe space for them to practise their new found signing skills in a social environment. There was also the opportunity to invite others who were deaf, hard of hearing, or simply interested in the deaf world. My aim has always been to bridge the gap between the deaf and the hearing world, and what better way to do this than to bring everyone together over a cheeky drink in a posh wine bar! - The Social Deaf Club was born.

Hard of hearing, or not, everyone is welcome.

Upcoming New Forest Social Deaf Club dates this year:

Drop in anytime from 5pm to 8pm. Free Entry. Pet dogs also welcome!
  • Tuesday 1st October 2024

Everyone in the village is invited to a Free Sign Language Open Day on Saturday 14th September 2024 from 1.30pm to 4pm in Milford on Sea Village Hall.

This informal Open Day will give simple tips on communicating with deaf people, or those hard of hearing, and an insight into how British Sign Language helps deaf and hard of hearing people communicate with their silent world.

Free Drop-In Lasting Powers of Attorney Sessions

Starting from Monday 2nd September 2024 between 10.30am to 12 noon, Tony, a semi-retired local professional who runs LPA's For Locals, will be offering a weekly drop-in, information and advice service on Lasting Powers of Attorney for local residents at The Bridge.

The LPA free drop-in advice sessions will then continue to take place at The Bridge every Monday from 10.30am to 12 noon.

The idea is simply to make Lasting Powers of Attorney more easily understood, more accessible and more affordable to local people.

He will explain the importance for us all of having LPA’s in place, how they work, the choices available, why it's never too early and the implications for all involved if we don't have them or simply leave it too late.

There are two types of LPA. One for Financial decisions (includes property) and one for Health and Care decisions.  Both are equally important as we focus on living life for today, but with an eye on making tomorrow easier for everyone in our family or friendship circle should difficulties arise.

If you would like any free information or guidance in the meantime, please contact Tony below.

Stroll through the village of Milford on Sea and its lovely wooded Pleasure Grounds, while your guide relates how the sleepy hamlet of Milford tried to live down its smuggling days and changed its name to try to rival genteel Eastbourne.
