Learn British Sign Language in a Fun Course

Deaf Awareness Course: Introduction to British Sign Language

After three very successful Introduction to British Sign Language Courses in the village, another Ten Week Course is due to start:

Monday 31st March 2025 until Monday 23rd June 2025 from 5pm to 6pm.
(Breaks on 2 Bank Holiday Mondays). Held in Milford on Sea Village Hall/Library in Park Road, Milford on Sea, SO41 0QH.

The aim is for you to be able to communicate with deaf people, and this valuable and caring skill can enhance the lives of those you meet who are unable to hear the world around us.

We are fortunate to have Nancy Weatherson running the course, she is a qualified Deaf Communications Professional living in Milford on Sea, and she supports deaf and hard of hearing people throughout the UK.

In 2022 the BSL Act was passed, meaning that British Sign Language has now been recognised as a language of England, Wales and Scotland in its own right. This is a wonderful success for the deaf community.

Nancy works closely with Deaf Professionals and together they have created a Deaf Awareness Course designed to introduce some useful communication tactics to you as an individual, or your group.

If this is something that you believe that you will benefit from and enjoy, now is your chance to learn something new that will really make a difference.

Course Cost: £130 in advance for the whole course | Bring a Friend: £115 each.

If you are interested in finding out more about the Deaf Awareness Course, please contact Nancy at: nancy@feelhear.co.uk. There is no obligation if you register your interest.

Beach Huts have licenses terminated

A recent article by Roz Waters in the Advertiser & Times has revealed that 46 beach huts at Hordle Cliff are in the process of having their licenses terminated by the New Forest District Council.

The beach huts are individually owned, but the land on which they sit is owned by NFDC. So, if the NFDC withdraws permission the owner is responsible for removing the beach hut. Prior to this, the huts had a value of around £25,000 each.

Over recent years many beach huts have already been destroyed due to violent storms and coastal erosion.

Less than a year ago 25 unsafe and damaged huts were removed by NFDC.

Under the Hurst Spit to Lymington Strategy, there are no plans to protect this strip of Milford on Sea coastline. www.hurstspit2lymington.co.uk

As a result, local resident, Mark Jardine has proposed an ambitous plan to try to do something about protecting this area of beach. To read more, please click here.

Have you any Spare Wool for the Knit & Natter Group?

The Milford on Sea's Knit & Natter Group, run by Jacky Harrison, have been supporting New Forest for Ukraine since they founded and since then have donated many hundreds of knitted items.

They are constantly looking for spare yarn to make children’s clothes for Ukrainian children.

If you can help please drop spare wool into The Village Hall/Community Library on any Monday between 2pm and 4pm.

------------------------

The knitting work of the The Milford on Sea's Knit & Natter Group was featured on BBC's Countryfile on  Sunday 7th May 2023.

The show did a segment on the crisis in Ukraine, and our village Knit & Natter Group were delighted to be asked to represent the UK's knitting groups.

The show's host, Matt Baker visited the village to chat to the ladies and by all accounts was described to be a 'charming man'.

Following the filming of the ladies, and on behalf of the Milford Village Association who run the Village Hall/Library, Matt Baker and his television crew were given Coronation bookmarks as a memento of a happy afternoon in Milford on Sea.

If you have any spare balls of wool, the Knit & Natter ladies would be very happy to put them to good use.

------------------------------
About the Knit & Natter Group

The Knit & Natter Group meet on Monday's from 2pm to 4pm in the Village Hall in Park Road.

The group was founded in 2007, and they often knit items for a good cause or charity, and love to have a chat as they knit together.

During the height of the Covid Pandemic in January 2021, the Knit & Natter Group, along with the WI and other Milford on Sea residents, supported the Becton Rotary Club Knitted Hearts Project, knitting many hearts for patients & staff in local hospitals.

In 2022 the group commenced making knitted items for the displaced people from the Ukraine conflict. Many hundreds of practical items followed right into 2025.

Everyone is warmly welcomed to join in the Knit & Natter, so please just go along.

PS: The group is currently full, but please feel free to pop in and add your name to the waiting list.
