Lockdown Shops & Services in Milford on Sea

In March last year we published a list of 'Lockdown Shops & Services in Milford on Sea', who would have thought that 11 months later we would still be in Lockdown?!

But, here we are, and with luck we are much closer to the end of Lockdown than the beginning.

As a reminder I thought it might be useful to remind everyone of what our village shops can offer by re-running the article.

Fish Pies from Verveine

David at Verveine has been busy in the kitchen cooking his delicious fish pies.

Each pie is topped with a mustard mash and Cornish Gouda cheese to make them the perfect comfort food for a cold or rainy February day. 

The individual fish pies are £4.50 or £6.00 for the larger size. Both are available to buy from the Verveine Fish Mongers from Thursday morning.

Go on... everyone needs some Omega 3 in their life!

Hospital Troops based at South Lawn Hotel

You may have seen in the local press/Facebook that the army have been helping out in hospitals to relieve some of the pressure the NHS is under and they joined New Forest Hospital in Lymington last week. 

That is good news in its own right of course, but even better to know that South Lawn has been given the privilege of looking after them. The hotel currently have 8 rooms occupied by the troops and they are providing them with dinner bed and breakfast until the end of February with the likelihood of the assistance continuing.

The Royal Engineer troops are wearing their uniforms for their role at the hospital so if anyone sees them please don't be concerned and I'm sure they would appreciate a smile, friendly wave or a thank you. 

Despite South Lawn Hotel being closed to the general public, they remain very busy with meals and grocery deliveries. 

The team have also delivered a few of their regular customers for their vaccination jab at the medical centre and are providing a parking base for the Community First New Forest Mini Bus which is also providing a valuable service in helping the vaccination programme.

There is no doubt that South Lawn have done all they can to support the community throughout this difficult time.

New Delivery Menu at South Lawn

Tim, Nicola and the South Lawn Team have been supporting the Milford on Sea community from the very begining of the Coronavirus crisis. 

During this time they have provided a delivery & takeaway service from The Cedar Tree restaurant's menu of tasty hot meals, Sunday lunches and a range of home diary essentials and treats. Also, they created innovative pop-up food options for the village which included a Drive Through Burger Bar last summer.

Milford on Sea Unsung Lockdown Heroes

Throughout this pandemic Milford on Sea must have had many 'Unsung Lockdown Heroes' who deserve a thank you. People who have helped others with acts of kindness however large or small. 

This could be local people who do anything from supporting a neighbour by getting their shopping or prescriptions, it could be friends who have kept your spirits up, a kind stranger who has lent a helping hand, or people volunteering to help other people in the community in any way. It could also be a village business or organisation who are going that extra mile to get the community through this crisis.


There must be a lot of people out there who deserve a thank you, so please don't be shy or hesitant in sending us the information. Nothing would give us more pleasure than to give some small recognition to those that are helping others and keeping our community together.

Handmade Chocolate Boxes by Verveine

Verveine have created boxes of handmade 64% Valrhona chocolate caramels. 

These delicious bespoke chocolates are available to purchase at the restaurant at £5 for a box of 6. An ideal gift for Valentine's Day, a present or just an indulgence for yourself!

New Seasons Valentine's Flowers

New Seasons Florists in Milford on Sea high street are taking Valentine's orders by phone or email, for either for delivery or collection on Saturday or Sunday.

Additional houses at The White Horse rejected

A latest application for housing behind the closed village pub, The White Horse in Keyhaven Road has been rejected.

Bayview Homes was given consent to construct three properties on land adjoining The White Horse but an application for a larger development has been refused by the district council.

Downton Holiday Park for sale

A recent article in the Daily Echo has reported that Downton Holiday Park is for sale at guide price of £2.9million.

The caravan park has been in the same family for 72 years and covers 3.6 acres near the beach at Milford on Sea.

New Forest Basics Bank Wish List

The New Forest Basics Bank has a Wish List on Amazon which identifies the thing they most need and which people can order to donate. (Click here to view)

Recently they published a touching message from a food parcel recipient:
"I've ordered some stationery for you. It's coming in three separate deliveries. You were very kind and delivered my family a food parcel a few weeks ago and we wanted to say thank you. Thank you for all the help you give everyone. I almost cried at the generous delivery and it really helped, I wasn't expecting to be able to get so much. You are angels"

The New Forest Basics Bank Team also sent their thanks to their volunteers, and the generosity of their supporters we can help so many families who are struggling at the moment. This includes:
  • Boots in Milford on Sea for donating 53 Kg of toiletries
  • The Rotary Club, including members from Milford who empty the crates three times a week and deliver all the food to the Basics Bank.
  • The local churches who are still collecting donations even though they are not meeting.
  • Local schools who are fundraising for them to buy food.
  • The customers at Hollands in Milford on Sea
  • and of course everyone that has bought so many goodies from the Amazon Wish List.

Transport to vaccinations

Community First New Forest is using its minibuses to transport passengers to the Milford on Sea War Memorial Hospital for their vaccinations. 

You would be collected from your home, and the driver will wait while you have the jab and take you back home afterwards. 

Only one person is taken at a time and the size of the vehicle is such that social distancing can be maintained. All drivers are DBS checked. 

The fare is £3.00 and donations to the charity are welcome. There is now a bus located in Milford on Sea for these trips and after every trip the bus is thoroughly cleaned and disinfected.

Please note: There was an article in the Lymington Times last week about the service but the paper inadvertently published the incorrect fare.

A cool new offering at Verveine

Something cool is happening at Verveine.

To add to the excellent food and fish they already offer, chef/patron David Wykes is now creating ice cream, and anyone that knows David will know that will not be anything ordinary!

The current ice cream flavours include: 'Coffee and donut', 'Cream tea', 'Wild Strawberry and hay', 'Tonka bean and blackcurrant', 'burnt chocolate and pistachio' and 'Sherbet Fountain'! 

The ice creams are now available to buy from the Verveine shop, and if your are ordering a kebab from them tonight you could pick up a pot for a delicious dessert.

Sponsorship opportunity - Milford-On-Sea Primary Year 6 leavers celebration

Please help us to make this school year memorable for the right reasons!

There is no doubting that the last year has been tough for everyone. With schools closed for large periods of time, many children have found themselves isolated from friends and their learning severely interrupted. This has perhaps been felt hardest by children in Year 6 – a critical year to develop social skills and consolidate academic achievements before the big leap to secondary school in September.

With this in mind, we are launching a campaign to support Year 6 children at Milford-On-Sea Primary school. We want to try and help them end their last primary school year on a positive note. But to be successful we really need some help! So, we are on the hunt for some amazing supporters from the local community who can help us make this happen.

Leaving primary school is an important milestone in every child’s life. At Milford-On-Sea Primary School this is usually marked by creating special activities and items for the Year 6 children including a yearbook featuring every year 6 child. In normal times these would be funded by proceeds from events set up by parents throughout the year – cake sales, raffles, etc. However, this is no normal school year and it has not been possible to support the year 6 children by raising money in this way.

This is where we are asking please for some much-needed support in helping us to give these children something positive to remember about this difficult school year, and to create some happy memories with them as they progress to the next step.

We are looking for a series of sponsors from the community. Those who understand how important this time is and would be kind enough to donate towards the costs of a yearbook, and a series of events (physical or virtual depending on restrictions) for the year 6 leavers.

Support like this would make such a difference and we would be incredibly grateful. In return we would ensure that your donation is well promoted. All sponsors will be recorded in the yearbook, shared on social media posts from the school and the PFA, and shared within the entire school community via newsletters etc. Sponsors would also be featured in news about the campaign shared with local media.

A Milford man's life in the Royal Navy

A local man, Kevin Perrett has completed an impressive 22 year career in the Royal Navy. He has served his country from basic training, supporting civilian emergencies and a variety of worldwide deployment.

About Naked Jam: The story so far…

Naked Jam was inspired by my sister, and by the confidence of winning an award at marmalade awards, 2011. I like to use seasonal local fruit and more often than not it’s foraged. ( I have been known to fall out of trees!) I love to develop new taste combinations, combined with traditional cooking methods.

I spent my childhood in Wales, where my mother was a Cook to a retired Colonel. They had an extensive kitchen garden and a hot-house supplying exotic fruits year-round, so that my mom could cater for the royal and overseas guests who sought the Colonel’s wise counsel.

I learned how to forage for flowers and fruits in a way we would now label ‘sustainable’. Whether collecting rosehips, sloes, blackberries, or rowanberries, we harvested only what we could reach easily – everything else was for birds and animals. At Christmas, I made gifts of jams, jellies and chutneys using ingredients from the garden and hedgerows, bottling and labelling as I went and learning that you can only make the best with the best.

My mom is my inspiration, a woman intent to get the best out of food, to give us the delight of her pallet and her cooking. She not only passed down her cook books but a love and passion for food, working with seasons and wild fruit.

It’s these fruit seasons that inspire my taste buds to dance, from oranges in January to autumn raspberry’s that capture the last of the summer sun. As I pick them from the bush I can imagine tasting that fresh burst of sunshine in a layered cake in November.

But ultimately I am inspired by my taste imagination capturing a season in a jar. The fruit changes as the seasons unfold so I channel my imagination and I use them to create unique recipes.

MOSHRS Podcast: Did Dr Who visit Milford?

Milford on Sea Historical Record Society have launched their latest podcast, this time the subject is: Did Dr Who visit Milford?

200 years ago communities were more self-contained than today. Life revolved around the parish, where most people would spend their whole lives. The parish was in the charge of the parson. 

But, what happened if the vicar never turned up? In 1820 Milford’s vicar was Dr George Thompson but he was never here! Find out more in our latest video podcast.

The MOSHRS meet 5 times a year where you can hear an interesting talk and meet people from across the village. There are also annual visits to places of interest. Membership is just £10.

Rotary Club Supporting Oakhaven Hospice

Pressure on the availability of NHS beds has resulted in Oakhaven Hospice being asked to provide a further four rooms to allow non-COVID-19 patients to be transferred to Oakhaven making NHS beds available for those suffering from COVID-19.

Oakhaven have responded brilliantly to this request and, with the help of Becton Rotary Club and New Forest Sewing for the NHS (both of which feature people from Milford on Sea) & local community who jointly donated £400 to provide scrubs and scrubs bags for the extra nursing staff, will soon be in a position to start receiving patients from the NHS.

The History of Shorefield

Shorefield Holidays was formed on the 4th July 1958 by the late Dr Robert Pollock. When he was unable to find a touring pitch for the family’s annual holiday, he purchased a small caravan park next to a worked-out gravel pit at Milford on Sea and so the company was born.


For the first eighteen years, the business was run by Dr Pollock as a sideline to his main career as a General Practitioner in Bedford. The Doc, as he was known, used to drive the 260 miles every Wednesday to visit the park. His evenings were spent paying the bills and collecting the site fees. When he retired from medicine, Dr Pollock moved to Milford and spent many hours listening to his customers and staff, whilst walking the park with his dog.

Dr Pollock’s children, the present Directors, joined the business in the 1970s bringing with them new skills. The family-run company has gone from strength to strength and now consists of eight parks all situated within Hampshire and Dorset.

Lytton Lawn Touring Park was purchased in 1988 and eight years later Oakdene Forest Park was acquired. Forest Edge Holiday Park was bought in 2001 and in 2005 Priestway Holiday Park, later renamed as Swanage Coastal Park was purchased. Merley Court Holiday Park was bought in 2006, and New Forest Lodge Retreat, formerly Kelston Holiday Park was purchased in 2017. Wilksworth Caravan Park, near Wimborne, is the latest acquisition bought in 2018 and is a fitting way to celebrate our award-winning 60th Anniversary for our parks and our staff.

Coastal defence restored at Milford on Sea

The Dredging Today website has reported that phase one of the coastal defence work at Westover on Milford on Sea seafront is now complete.

The construction commenced in August 2020. Since then, 12,000 tonnes of Norwegian granite has been put in place over a distance of 268 metres. In addition to this, steel sheets and girders have been installed to reinforce the seawall behind the newly constructed rock revetment and repairs have also been undertaken to a number of timber groynes along the beach.
