Last chance to get Drive-Thru Burgers at South Lawn

Tim, Nikki and the Team at South Lawn Hotel have worked so hard over the past few months and have been a real credit in supporting the village community. They are now looking to move on to their next phase.

This weekend is the last weekend for the pop up Drive Thru Burger Bar.

Tim explains: "After an amazing month we have sold over 14,000 burgers! We never expected that.

The time has come as the country eases further out of lockdown to focus our attention on the next exciting chapter for the South Lawn.

We have so much space inside and out and we want to ensure the hotel is ready to provide a Covid secure environment for people to meet for food, drink and entertainment. We can't wait to welcome our guests back and we are sure that the next phase of returning to normal will be as exciting as everything else we have done through this difficult time.

Our home delivery service is as busy as ever and we fully intend to carry this on even when the hotel re-opens. Attached is our latest edition of the At Home menu so if you fancy an English give us a call!

A massive thank you to everyone who has supported us."

Barry Jolly presented Local History Award

The Milford on Sea Historical Record Society are delighted to announce that the Editor of our long standing Occasional Magazine, Barry Jolly, has been presented with “The Local History Award for personal achievement for 2020” by the British Association for Local History.

The purpose of BALH is to encourage and assist the study of local history throughout Great Britain as an academic discipline and as a rewarding leisure pursuit for both individuals and groups.

These awards for personal achievement in services to local history are presented annually as a means of publicly honouring those who have made a significant voluntary contribution to local history. The aim is to identify and publicise good practice in whatever form it appears. This might be supporting a local history society or museum, teaching and lecturing, writing and publishing, but, most importantly, enthusing others to appreciate the history of their locality.

BALH annual awards are also made for a society newsletter, and to encourage research and publication. Further details may be found on the website www.balh.org.uk @BALHNews.

The Award to Barry Jolly is for “Promotion of local history of Milford-on-Sea through local and national journals, events and exhibitions”.

Barry has researched the family of Mrs M A T Whitby of Newlands in Milford over many years. As Mrs Whitby came from a naval family herself before marrying another naval officer, Captain John Whitby, his research has extended to cover Admiral Sir William Cornwallis and the other admirals of Milford, of whom there have been many. His output of articles, which have now been published in national and international journals, is prodigious.

He was one of the leading organisers of the Cornwallis Remembered celebrations in Milford and of the “Command of the Seas: The Navy and the New Forest Against Napoleon” exhibition at St Barbe Museum and Art Gallery in 2019. He has also given a number of talks to local organisations. As Editor of the Society’s Occasional Magazine, he has done much to create a readable and respected, but thoroughly researched, source of information on Milford’s history.

The Milford on Sea Historical Record Society has an excellent website with a lot of information and old pictures of Milford on Sea in the past. To visit the website; please click here.

The MOSHRS normally meet every quarter where you can hear an interesting talk and meet people from across the village. There are also annual visits to places of interest. Membership is just £10.

MCV win Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service

Milford Conservation Volunteers are honoured to announce that they have been awarded the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service. This is the highest award a voluntary group can receive in the UK and is equivalent to an MBE.

Representatives from the group will be attending a garden party at Buckingham Palace in May 2021 along with other recipients of this year’s award.

The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service aims to recognise outstanding work by volunteer groups to benefit their local communities. It was created in 2002 to celebrate the Queen’s Golden Jubilee. Winners are announced each year on the 2nd June.

Representatives from Milford Conservation Volunteers will receive the award from Nigel Atkinson Esq. Lord-Lieutenant of Hampshire later this summer. The Lord-Lieutenant is appointed by HM The Queen as her personal representative in Hampshire.

This award is an incredible recognition of the huge amount of work gone into the group by all members past and present, and all are humbled by the nomination and look forward to the recognition which it brings.

This is a very proud day for a worthy voluntary group in Milford on Sea, it is a pleasure to see their effort rewarded and we send our hearty congratulations.

David Horne, Chairman of Milford Conservation Volunteers said:
"Our MCV volunteers are incredibly pleased to have been recognised at such a prestigious level and to receive this delightful accolade from HM the Queen. It is in recognition of the unstinting efforts of our members over many years to inform and motivate the local community in actively protecting and enhancing the wonderful and varied habitats and recording the bountiful wildlife species that currently thrive in our immediate locality. Equally important to our active work parties have been our representation and influence when working hand in hand with other similar minded organisations and local government bodies”.

“Through our efforts we have not only offered protection to the local wild-life habitats but made a hugely positive impact on people’s lives, both young and old in appreciating nature. This is particularly important in these unprecedented times when temporarily restricted to our gardens or immediate surroundings. Thank you to everyone who has helped along the way”.

    Keith Metcalf , MCV Conservation Officer also commented;
"It is a great honour to have been recognised for the voluntary conservation work we do for our local community. Our members (past and present) will be lifted by this announcement following the last three terribly difficult months for so many families across the country”.

“In accepting this award, we remember to include our gratitude to our founder members that had the vision and drive to form the earlier groups from which MCV was subsequently formed. Firstly, to the Milford Environment Group that was established in the early 1990’s following the 1987 hurricane that devastated Sharvells Copse. In particular, we thank the enthusiasm of MEG’s first Chairperson, Sandra Ebbetts and the late Phil Gossling (their second Chairman) and of course the first committee members, Heather Allery, Julia Poole, Rosemary Crumby, Peggy Statton-Bevan, Ernie Goldsworthy and the late Bill Smith”.

“We also pay tribute to the founder members of the Wildlife Recording Group, including Anne Jenks, who was the last person to chair MEG and also a founder member and first person to chair the WRG and the MCV when it was formed in January 2012. Tony Locke was also a founder member of the WRG and retired as Chairman of MCV at the start of 2020”.

“We are equally grateful to the Parish Council for having the confidence to allow MCV to undertake our conservation work in Milford’s nature reserves and public open spaces. We acknowledge the help given to us over many years by Hampshire Conservation Volunteer’s and especially to Trustee, Hugh Corry. We thank the New Forest Area Conservation Volunteers and the National Park’s Land Advice Service team who have all worked tirelessly to ensure that our local wildlife and the habitats in which they live, are well cared for and help make them resilient to whatever the future change in climate throws our way. We share this award with each of them”.

    Walk for Wellness Revisited

With lockdown restrictions being relaxed a little now is the time to think about getting outdoors for more exercise with some social interaction and boosting your immunity with some fresh air. Walk for Wellness/Jog for Joy is a free walk or jog group that Melissa set up last year for the community with twice weekly meetings on Mondays and Wednesdays.

Now small groups outside are permitted Melissa has decided to restart the sessions from Wednesday 3rd June, but to comply with the Government guidelines the groups will now be limited to 6 people in total each time and of course they will have to observe the social distance rule.

Each group is open to walkers or joggers – the joggers can go on ahead and double back so they will still benefit from the company of the others.

Initially the groups will meet at 10am on Mondays and Wednesdays meeting outside Needles Eye Café. If there greater demand Melissa may add additional slots.

All are welcome but to effectively limit the numbers you need to book by contacting Melissa by clicking here or text/call: 07712 164310.

Anyone is welcome to join in.

    About the Sessions

The purpose of the regular free sessions is to help people of any age keep fit, as well as to have some fun social interaction doing what is generally acknowledged as a very effective health improver. While the group is exercising there will be the opportunity to pick Melissa’s brains and to discuss health generally, nutrition and exercise – and of course just have a good old natter and some socialising.

The actual walks/jogs run for about an hour (covering approx. 3 miles for the walkers). All abilities and beginners welcome and those that want to try to jog will be given some targets to reach.

    About Melissa

Melissa Page moved to Milford on Sea village in May last year and she has been regularly volunteering in the Community Centre Café. She would now like to use her particular skills in doing more for people in the village.

Melissa was a lawyer for 20 years before deciding to follow her passion for fitness and retrain as an accredited personal trainer. As a fairly inactive child and young adult Melissa, in an attempt to lose weight for her wedding, took up running and quickly became a dedicated gym bunny. She has run 4 marathons, the last of which she finished in 3 hours 37 minutes (coming 10th in her age group). Before moving to Milford she used to train people privately although she hasn’t done this since moving here.

On arrival in Milford she completed her charitable fund raising commitment to run 50 kilometres every week for 50 weeks despite a prolonged knee injury. Over the last year Melissa realised how important running was, not only to her physical, but also her mental, health. At 51 she remains relatively fit and loves exercise, running & walking regularly with her husband. She is not intending to carry on with her personal training business for income but would love to help others in the community benefit both physically and mentally from regular outdoor activity and to enjoy some good company and chats with a group of like-minded people.
