Another Flower and Produce Show Success

The annual Milford Flower and Produce Show was held at All Saints’ Church Hall, Milford-on-Sea on Saturday 15th July 2017.

This year’s show was very well supported and there were more competition entries than last year.Once more there were a lot of entries by children, including the Guides, Cubs, Brownies, Rainbow and Milford Preschool. 

The Challenge cup for the overall winner with most points this year was David Badham, who also won the Weatherhead cup for most points in Vegetables. the Joanne Weatherhead cup for the best exhibit for Vegetables was awarded to Tony Hales, a newcomer.

In the Fruit section the most points scored was for Hilary Sullivan who was awarded The Polson cup. Sue Tennant had the best exhibit and was awarded the Jim Asher cup

There were several new entrants this year and the Liz Jones Cup for newcomers was won by John Welsh

In the Flower section section the Dorothy Nightingale cup was awarded to Christine Twyford, the overall winner. The Margaret King cup for best 3 Rose stems was won by Carol Dickman, while the Fairbairn Rose plate for the best single Rose bloom was won by Peter Beasley. The best exhibit in Flowers was Diana Cobbett who won the Presidents cup.

The Floral Art section had 8 lovely contributions. The Lucey Bowl for ‘A Midsummer night’s dream’ was awarded to Sue Erler who also won the 

Danby cup for her ‘Alpine miniature’ For ‘Dining in Style’, Carole Barnett was awarded the Molly Miller cup. The Hatchard bowl was awarded to Christine Calder for ‘Alice through the Looking Glass’.

There were many entries for the Coffee and Walnut cake, in the Produce Section and the winner was Sue Digby. A good number of children entered the Chocolate brownies and men entered the Rock cakes.The overall winner was Diana Cobbett who won the Patterson Produce Cup.

There were several entries for the Childrens’ section and the Scarecrow this year was won by Milford Rainbows for ‘Mary Mary Quite Contrary’ complete with Silver bells and Cockle shells. They were awarded the Helen Cookson cup.

The prize for the best child’s entry, The George Dowland cup, was awarded to Lucy Webb.

For the most points in Handicrafts particularly the Pottery class Marie Rooney won the John Pither cup. Of the several lovely paintings of ‘Coastal’ the winner was Joyce Grainger.

Lucy Webb won the Photography Frame for the best entry in the photography section,a good achievement as she entered in the adult part of the section. 

At the end of the show the chairman thanked everyone who supported the show and all the entrants for their considerable efforts. He also thanked his hard working committee and all the helpers who made the show great success again this year.

Bowls Club Needles Pairs Competition Winners

In spite of cloudy conditions for the start of Milford on Sea Bowls Club annual Needles Pairs Competition a good day was had by all with the sun finally coming out for the exciting final between Judy Spooner & Phil Freeman and Stuart Poulson & Peter Thorogood.

A large number of players stayed to watch the closely fought final which in the end was won by Judy & Phil.

The Needles Trophy and the glass keepsakes were presented by Martin Scott of Hayward Fox the kind sponsors of this competition.

Milford on Sea Bowls Club have Presidents Day next Sunday so club will be busy again.

The Wash House Micro Ale Bar Opens

The Wash House Micro Ale Bar, based in the old launderette, will be opening next week.

The opening hours will be Monday to Sunday from 9am to 11pm when they will be serving craft ales, lagers, spirits, wines, soft drinks, coffee and bar snacks.

We will let you know when their new website is launched, but in the meantime pop in to check it out.

Church Hill will be closed on Saturday 29th July from 6pm until 12 Midnight.

Milford on Sea High Street will be closed on Saturday 29th July 2017 from 9am until 12 Midnight and Sunday 30th July 2017 from 9am until 8pm.

MoS Tennis Club hosts Touchtennis

Milford on Sea Tennis & Squash Club are hosting a Touchtennis Tournament in August.

Touchtennis is a modified version of regular tennis, played on smaller courts and with shorter rackets (21" rackets) and foam balls. It's tennis' version of 5-a-side football. 

The use of smaller courts and foam balls creates and even playing field meaning all abilities can play together fairly. Touchtennis is a more lighthearted, fun and friendly version of tennis, and is a form of tennis which is designed to increase the number of people playing some form of tennis. 

At the Tennis Club, they are ideally looking for 35+ players of all abilities, however, anyone 16 and over is more than welcome to come play (Not younger I'm afraid.) Its a great way for both adults and seniors to become more active, and is not strenuous in the slightest.

Milford on Sea Tennis & Squash Club has been given a grant of £300 by the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) to buy brand new kits and equipment for this tournament, use of which is included in the £1 entry fee. This includes the use of kits, balls and courts.

The tournament is scheduled to start at 10am and finish at 2pm at Milford on Sea Tennis Club, again we will be welcoming all abilities, even if you've never picked up a tennis racket in your life they would be happy for these players to come and be introduced to Tennis.

Here are the rules for Touchtennis to grasp a better understanding:

• Played with normal tennis scoring but with sudden death on every deuce point with receiver to choose side
• Serving can be overarm or underarm and the serve may not be volleyed back by the returner. One serve only.
• ‘If you throw it you must hit it’ – on throwing the ball up to serve, the server must hit it, letting it drop/catching it will result in loss of point.
• Sets are to 4 games, and you must win by 2 clear games. If the score is 4-4, a tie break to 5 points will take place.
• No let rule – if the ball clips the net and lands in correct service box, the ball counts as ‘in play’.

Sounds fun, why not give it a go!

I've recently returned from Australia to the village into which I was born to care for my terminally ill father and to organise care for my mother who now has advanced dementia.

They have lived in Milford for nearly sixty years - immigrants from the grim north!

All I wanted to say is a heartfelt thank you to many of the shops in the village. Due to her condition, she had often been found confused and a little lost in the village, and was helped by so many local traders. To them.....known and unknown, I would like to extend my thanks for the many examples of kindness and help they have given.

The sense of community and the uniqueness of the village obviously still burns as strongly as it did in my childhood and for generations before.

Be proud, genuine villagers. You have something unique and very special. 

My life has taken me across the world, but I will still always consider this to be home. 

So, to those who have helped - known and unknown. Thank you. From the bottom of my heart."

Community Centre Buys Adjacent Land

The Milford on Sea Community Centre is set to expand having purchased adjacent land in Sea Road .

The Community Centre is now considering how best to extend the accommodation to meet demands that are constantly increasing. The building is currently used by many groups including those providing help and activities for the elderly and the young, theatre, many different day time and evening classes, musical and comedy evenings, and support groups such as stroke and dementia.

Extending the Centre will be a significant, challenging and exciting project. So, the Community Centre would like to know the views, preferences and priorities of their users, and the wider community. New Meet Up Group

New Village Veg Shop

Milford on Sea once again has its own greengrocers.

New owner, Nick Munnik has run a successful greengrocers (Village Veg) in Brockenhurst for eight years, and has now opened a fully refreshed and well-stocked shop, also named Village Veg.

The new shop will be managed by Kirsty Munnick, and is located in the same premsies of Milford's previous greengrocers, Marjorie's. 

The Village Veg opened in Milford on Sea on Saturday 8th July 2017, and they are now looking forward to welcoming you to try their range of fruit and veg.

Correction to the Milford Festival Programme

The Milford Arts & Music Festival committee have just been made aware of an error in this year's programme. 

The Jazz Night at South Lawn Hotel on Tuesday 25th July at 6:30 is not a free entry event. It is a fund raiser for local charities including Oakhaven and is £16 per head including a hog roast or vegetarian BBQ.

The committee apologise for any confusion and all remaining programmes are being corrected. 

They say that this was an error on their behalf and nothing to do with South Lawn.

PS: I say; These guys give their time, expertise and effort for free on behalf of the community, and they should not feel bad about this small error. In fact this significant and enjoyable village event is normally a seamless success and they deserve the thanks of us all.

PPS: Sod's law says; 'What can go wrong, will go wrong!'.

New Forest Tour Recommences

The New Forest Tour begins operating again on the 8th July and runs the three daily bus routes across the Forest until 10th September 2017.

If you fancy a day out from Milford on Sea you can hop on to enjoy The Blue Route which takes you from Milford on Sea seafront (or Keyhaven) to: Lymington – Brockenhurst – Burley – New Milton – Barton-on-Sea and then back to Milford on Sea. Plus of course, you can hop off and hop on whenever you like.

The complete tour has an approximate duration of 2 hours 5 minutes.

You can also purchase a Brand New Forest Card from Milford News in the village to redeem numerous offers as you travel around the New Forest.

Bruce Connell: Remembered In Pictures

Friends of the late Milford on Sea artist Bruce Connell are organising a retrospective exhibition of his paintings in the village Community Centre to celebrate his life and talent. 

Bruce specialised in sculpture in art school in the sixties and though he always loved to sketch came to painting relatively late in life when he moved to Milford and found inspiration in the local coastline.

He captured the colour and variety of beach-life in works exhibited with Milford Art Group, of which he was, for a time, a member, and at several one-man shows in Lymington, Highcliffe Castle and the Milford Community Centre.

But Bruce refused to follow the commercial route of working in the same ‘photographic’ images and developed an equally popular ‘comic book style’ adapting landscapes here in Hampshire, Devon and in Brittany where he and his wife Carolyn recently spent a large part of their summers.

The couple met through their involvement with the annual Milford-on-Sea Art and Music Festival for which Bruce used to organise the novel ‘mosaic’ backdrop for the main stage on the village green. Locals, the talented and not-so talented, painted small sections of a picture on individual canvases finally hung together to reveal the completed design on the festival weekend.

The exhibition is entitled Bruce Connell R.I.P. - Remembered In Pictures. He was working on sketches for a French commission until days before his admission to Rowcroft Hospice in Torquay in May. Proceeds from his picture sales will be donated to hospice funds.

The exhibition will be open to the public from 2pm to 4pm on Sunday 23rd July 2017, and from 10am to 4pm on Monday 24th July 2017.

Apple Court Gardens Reopens After 4 Year Closure

Apple Court Gardens in nearby Hordle have new owners, Emma Taylor and Gavin Mann who live in Milford on Sea.

The nationally acclaimed Hampshire garden has now reopened after 4 year closure and is gaining fantastic feedback from locals and holidaymakers alike. Welcoming 250 through the gates in the first two weeks of opening. 

It is great that we now have another lovely place to visit right on our doorstep.

Featured in various international magazines, and Alan Titmarsh’s “Love Your Garden” on ITV, the garden is packed with unusual flowers, shrubs and trees from around the world. Local Milford on Sea resident Peter Ashwood is a Committee Member of the New Milton Chess Club which welcomes players of all abilities whether you are interested in friendly social chess or more competitive play in the Bournemouth and District Chess League. The Club will be running teams in Divisions 2 and 3 in 2017/18.

Help Out at the Community Centre

The Bar and Café in the Community Centre form an important part of the service that is provided to residents and visitors.

Each of these services is managed by a team of volunteers – led by two small groups who make sure that there are adequate stocks to meet demand, manage the rota and help introduce new volunteers to the job.

Both teams have a vacancy for which a volunteer is sought.

Bar

The bar is open only for events that are presented in the Community Centre and a person is needed to take over the volunteers rota - this is work that needs limited computer skills and can be done without leaving the comfort of ones own home! It involves

· Keeping the Bar events calendar up to date - gathering information from the Community Centre    Calendar, 'What's On" etc.

· Maintaining a contacts list of volunteers

· Contacting new volunteers and arranging their induction into the role.

· Intermittent emails to the volunteers to get them to look at the rota and sign up.

· Contact with event managers on the rare occasions when no volunteer is available to cover an event.

Café

The cafe is normally open Monday to Friday only from 9.30 to 12.30 but occasionally for longer periods and on some Saturdays for special events.

The rota for cafe volunteers is currently run in a less high-tech way than the bar! A paper copy of the months rota is kept in the cafe and volunteers sign up. However, the rota person needs to have their own copy and to keep an eye on how it’s filling up. They must contact the volunteers, usually by email, to keep them informed about gaps that need filling. 

Someone taking over this task could, of course, find a more efficient way to ensure there is always a volunteer to staff the cafe!

Beautiful Demoiselle Spotted by the Dane Stream

An eagle eyed reader, Eric Lewis spotted and captured these excellent photographs of a Beautiful Demoiselle whilst in the woods by the Dane Stream in Milford on Sea.

The White Horse Opens a Tea Room

Paul Rand, the landlord at The White Horse in Milford on Sea has opened a Tea Room, alongside its usual pub activities.

You can visit the The Tea Room any Monday to Saturday from 9am to 6pm, and a copy of the menu is below.

To celebrate, Paul is offering today and tomorrow (Saturday 17th June) a free tea or coffee when you buy a sandwich or premium cake.

£3 million Montague Dawson Art Sale

The Daily Echo has reported that A £3 million collection of oil paintings by Milford on Sea based and great marine artist, Montague Dawson, is being sold this month.

The art collection includes a £120,000 picture, The Stricken Kelly, which features the ill-fated Hampshire warship HMS Kelly, commanded by Earl Mountbatten of Burma.

Two other Dawson paintings – The Silver Moon-Nocturne and Trimming The Sails – will be offered for sale at £375,000 and £200,000 respectively.

Collectively the  art collection could reach a sale value of £3m for the lucky owner.

Montague Dawson, F.R.S.A., R.S.M.A. (British, 1895-1973) once lived at 1 Hurst Road, Milford on Sea, SO41 0PY, and a plaque sits on the white walls of the property today.

Hugh Retires from Hugh Whitlock Solicitors

It’s all change at Hugh Whitlock Solicitors. You may have noticed the new signage - ‘Dagless and Whitlock Solicitors’. After 45 years as a Solicitor, 25 of them in Milford on Sea sole practitioner Hugh Whitlock has retired - as you can see he is rather relaxed in the photograph!

Hugh is also known in the village in various disguises from a sleazy car/cow dealer to this year’s Genie of the Lamp in the village pantomimes.

Hugh qualified as a Solicitor in 1972 and worked with Richards Butler in the City of London before moving to Winchester and taking a partnership with Shentons. He then moved to the village to set up his own practice, first from a small office in the High Street and then moving to the existing offices at number 44. He was delighted to take on a partner - Louise Allonby – who had first worked with Hugh as a student on a work placement from university. Louise was with the practice for several years until she left to have her first baby - she now has three! So Hugh became a sole practitioner again.

Three years ago Niels Dagless joined the firm as an assistant Solicitor always with succession in mind. So, from the end of April of this year Niels has taken over, given the practice a new look along with an established staff of Billie, Ellie and Otillia and Hugh has become a consultant to the firm, working on a part time basis for the next year. Hugh will be pleased to see old and new clients and is delighted to be supporting the Dagless and Whitlock practice as a consultant. Not sure about next year’s pantomime though!

Scammers target Zaika

A reader has let us know of a scam phone call they received the other night.

The caller offered them the opportunity to buy some sort of VIP card for £55 which would give them various extras at Zaika Indian Restaurant in Milford on Sea High Street. 

Obviously they expressed surprise as the restaurant is currently closed, which the caller was unaware of.

The caller was ready to take payment over the phone on a card, but they wisely declined!

The fate of Zaika Indian Restaurant remains a mystery. 

For some months now the window has carried a sign saying a new chef is on the way with an exciting new menu.

We have tried to contact the restaurant, but with no success. So, the news is that we have no news! (Quality journalism from these pages as always!)

I guess the new chef has either got lost on his way, or is still looking for ingredients for his new menu. - Either way, not having a curry house on the doorstep is giving me significant withdrawal symptoms!

The quirky Belle Epoque has reopened at the previous high street location of The Raft (which is now located at The Marine on Milford on Sea seafront, and serving great food and drinks all day and evening.)

Milford Artist's painting sells for $32,000

A painting by a famous Milford on Sea resident has fetched $32,000 at a Christie's auction in the Rockefeller Center, New York on 23rd May 2017.

Montague Dawson, F.R.S.A., R.S.M.A. (British, 1895-1973) once lived at 1 Hurst Road, Milford on Sea, SO41 0PY, and a plaque sits on the white walls of the property today.

The artwork is entitled: Bowling Along - 'The Glorious Lightning'.

An interesting article appeared in The Daily Echo which told more about the life of Montague Dawson:

Food was so scarce in some parts of Hampshire during the Second World War that at one point artist Montague Dawson survived by living on soup made from lawn cuttings and nettles.

Mr Dawson survived this hardship and went on to become, in the 1960s, one of the world’s highest paid artists.

He enjoyed an annual income of £100,000 when in 1967 the average Southampton house cost £4,050.

Montague Dawson died at the Western Hospital, Southampton, on May 21,1973. He was buried at Boldre Church, Lymington.

The latest book in The Hurst Chronicles

This time last year Robin Crumby launched a new book series 'The Hurst Chronicles' set at Hurst Castle in the aftermath of a flu pandemic.

Another Award for Milford Travel

Last Tuesday, Christina at Milford Travel in Milford on Sea High Street, won an award at The Global Travel Group Conference. 

The award was for the Best Increase In Sales Retail South 2017, and Christina said; "It was basically a recognition for how fabulous my customers are!!"

Christina was previously an air hostess, and knows many great places around the world - and the best ways to get there!

Milford Travel offers a full range of travel services including; bespoke holidays, cruises, exotic trips, flights, and even coach trips.

Obviously a lot of holidays are now booked on the web, but to do this takes a fair bit of research, and ultimately nothing beats a nice dose of personal service - and supporting a village business!

CPR Training for Village Clubs & Societies

The Milford on Sea Community First Responders have recently been awarded CPR training equipment from the British Heart Foundation and would like to offer training to clubs and societies in the village.

The training kit will teach trainees how to recognise cardiac arrest and carry out CPR on adults and children.

It uses a film tutorial on a DVD to demonstrate CPR skills. Participants watch the film and practice the skills on portable manikins.

It also shows how public access defibrillators work and their role in the live-saving process, so trainees are aware of their importance and are more confident to use one, if needed.

Up to 10 trainees can be accommodated at a time, you just need a location big enough for everyone to practice (about the same sort of space you would need for yoga.)

About the Milford on Sea Community First Responders

Milford on Sea now has a newly established Community First Responders group.

The Community First Responders support the South Central Ambulance Service and get deployed to appropriate emergency calls in the village.

All are volunteers who donate their time and expertise for free. The new group has been founded in 2017 by Ross Woolgar, Terri Newton and Conrad Curtis.

The advantage of Community First Responders is that in many cases they can get there before the paramedics and commence life saving emergency treatment at the earliest opportunity, which significantly improves patients chances of survival.

Happy Birthday to Us!

We launched our first Milford on Sea village website www.milfordonsea.org on 20th May 2008, so it is now nine year old & and I don't look a day older!

Milford on Sea Website: When we decided to create this village website, it was purely as a hobby and to provide some more local information for locals and holidaymakers. I say ‘we’, but there is only me, my wife (who inadvertently provides occasional story lines) & our two dogs (who contribute much less than they should!)

From day one we have always loved our independence, and as we take no revenue from anyone this means we can say & do exactly what we like!

We never really considered that people would enjoy what we built, however it is very satisfying to provide a service to the local community which a number of people seem to enjoy.

The site has now taken on a life of its own, and a small hobby has now turned into a big one! As a result, we now have a number of spin offs which have been created for specific purposes to inform and entertain people across the village.

To date: www.milfordonsea.org has had 1,585,336 visitors - over a million people with nothing better to read! We are also averaging around 250 visits to the website every day.

Milford on Sea Calendar: This website details anything we hear about that is happening in the village, plus things that may be of interest nearby. The calendar also contains sections of 'Clubs & Classes' and 'Church Services'. www.milfordonseacalendar.org

Enjoy Milford on Sea - News Bulletin: We are now up to Edition No. 377 and counting!

The News Bulletin has 2868 local people who regularly receive our e-mail, and 907 unsubscribed people who don't want to hear the village news at all!

Our News Blog keeps people informed with articles and news that is only village related. Some are factual, others embellished, and others simply made up. Over 25,000 News Pages get read every month, and with approaching 1 million page views since we started, it seems most people find something worth reading! www.milfordonseanews.org

Replacement Beach Huts Completed

Three years after the 80mph+ winds tore down the Milford on Sea beach huts on Valentine's Day 2014, the new replacement huts are now complete.

The lower promenade is now open to the public and may be accessed from either end. Work is ongoing to the balustrades on the upper promenade - along the beach hut roofs. The Hurst Road west car park has also been opened for public use.

The majority of hut owners have collected their hut keys and will have a busy time decorating and furnishing huts to their taste. The majority of owners are pleased with the way in which the scheme has turned out.

The works to replace 119 beach huts and improve the seafront was carried out by Raymond Brown Construction Ltd from Ringwood.

The replacement beach huts have brightly coloured doors similar to the original ones. There are also concrete panels between the doors, and at the ends, which have a variety of designs which related to the local area or the sea.

There is also a new walkway with stainless steel handrails on top of the huts giving pedestrians a vantage point to take in the sea views.

Also new, is an access ramp at the western end near The White House which curves out to sea around the existing wartime pillbox.

In front of the beach huts the pathway is now wider giving more room for walkers and people using the beach huts.

Whether you love them or hate them (and there are strong views on both sides!), it is a vast improvement on the building site that has been on the seafront for so long.

All we need now is for the sunshine we are currently having to stay, and then everyone can enjoy the seafront in all its glory once again.
