Would you be a Volunteer Driver?

Milford Volunteer Drivers (MVD) provide a valuable transport service to the elderly and people in need in the village. To ensure their continued excellent service to our community, they urgently need to recruit additional volunteer drivers - and office support.

Drivers are paid 50p per mile for every journey undertaken, you decide when you are available and the MVD provide personal liability insurance and also cover car insurance excess and no claims discount.

They are also looking to recruit a volunteer as an administrator to take over the recruitment for the Group’s volunteer drivers and/or office coordinators. This is a home-based ad hoc role responding to prospective volunteer calls, sending application forms and any supporting paperwork to prospective volunteers and progressing applications to interview.

Office coordinators work in the Community Centre, for as little as 2 hours a month, organising client’s requests for transport.

The Milford Volunteer Drivers deliver a valuable community service by providing transport for adults who request it, to medical appointments at hospital, GP surgery, dentist, chiropodist, opticians and physiotherapy, or similar.

If you are interested in joining this friendly group in any of these roles, or would just like more information, please contact Will on 07716 118914. Please leave a message if no answer and the MVD will come back to you as soon as possible.

To book a journey, please call: 01590 641700

History of the Milford Volunteer Drivers

The Milford Community Care Group was founded in 1982 by two ladies from All Saints’ church, who recognised villagers’ need for reliable transport to medical appointments. From these small beginnings the Group expanded into the Registered Charity it is today.

In 2022 the group was renamed to Milford Volunteer Drivers (MVD). The MVD are based in The Bridge (Formerly the Community Centre) and affiliated to Milford on Sea Charitable Trust.

The volunteer driver service is provided to those living in Milford on Sea, Keyhaven, Everton and Downton, and at its peak the Group was driving 40 people a week to medical appointments.

The aim of Milford Volunteer Drivers is to provide transport for adults who request it, to medical appointments at hospital, GP surgery, dentist, chiropodist, opticians and physiotherapy, or similar. The organisation's name clearly describes what this voluntary group in the village continues to do with enthusiasm, empathy and kindness.

Moira & Carolyn at Folk at The Bridge

Milford Folk Club is so proud and delighted to welcome Moira Craig and Carolyn Robson back to Folk At The Bridge (Formerly Milford on Sea Community Centre) on Thursday May 11th at 7.30pm.

It has been sixteen years since they last came to Milford on Sea. Over the years they have been recognised individually as outstanding British folk artists and together they are much admired for their fine harmonies, their humour, their wide repertoire.

They have both grown up surrounded by music and song, Moira in Scotland and Carolyn in Northumberland and they now perform material from their traditional roots and heritage. It is not unusual though for the occasional contemporary song to be included in their repertoire with compelling and amusing lyrics, close harmonies, and good humour.

Their singing is described as: "The most inordinately fine singing you’re likely to hear."

Entry on the door: £5 - Bar open on night.

New Play Park Equipment installed

The young children's play equipment in Carrington Lane Park has been replaced by the Milford on Sea Parish Council, and it is now open again for small kids and toddlers.

The previous play equipment had fallen into disrepair and it is nice to see the Parish Council making a valuable investment that many families with young children will be able to enjoy.

Graham Wells, Parish Clerk commented: "The old unit had been repaired a number of times over many years before it became beyond repair.

At the last annual ROSPA report, several more defects were highlighted and the Parish Council acted on the report and ordered the unit at the end of last year.

The funds to pay for the equipment were met from mitigation money received from taking on the Play Park at “The Swifts” (i.e. it was in effect paid from funds received from Pennyfarthing Homes as part of the housing development).

We will probably purchase some turf in the next couple of weeks to finish off the surface before it gets to muddy."

Melissa doing a Desert Dare for Oakhaven

Local Milford on Sea resident, Melissa Page is taking part in the annual Hospice Walk in aid of Oakhaven Hospice on Saturday 20th May.

The Hospice Walk can be 7, 13 or 26 miles. Melissa is a keen supporter of Oakhaven Hospice, and for the past three years has completed the 26 mile walk.

Lots of people will be doing The Hospice Walk locally, and as Melissa will be in Arizona for the day of the walk, so she thought she would do her “Desert Dare” by completing the 26 mile walk in the desert.

This should be a real challenge in terms of heat, as at that time of year it can get up to 100 degrees or above. Also, the terrain is undulating, rocky and sandy, with an abundance of none too friendly wildlife such as; rattlesnakes, scorpions, coyotes, mountain lions and vultures.

Her husband, Ed has agreed to be her support network (as always!). He will be meeting Melissa at various points en-route with water and snacks and hopefully some company too, as he also plans to walk part of the route with her.

To read more or to support Melissa, please click here.

Melissa has also been running Walk for Wellness in the village since 2019.

About Walk for Wellness

Walk for Wellness was set up by Melissa Page in August 2019. She is a qualified personal trainer and ex-lawyer who has a real passion for fitness, and has completed 4 marathons and various charity challenges.

Melissa wanted to give something back to the community so she started free walking groups at 10am on Mondays and Wednesdays for anyone who would like to go along.

The aim being for people to get some exercise and simultaneously have some social company.

The exercise is usually followed by a well-earned coffee and chat. The groups tend to cover 3 to 3.5miles in the hour but different speeds can be catered for (including jogging).  She always does a warm up to start and a stretch after.

Anyone that would like to join in can just turn up at 10am on Mondays and Wednesdays outside the Needles Eye Café.

The importance of fitness is clear, and people’s reasons for walking varies, and Melissa is keen to see new members join in for fitness and fun.

To join the Walk for Wellness free walking group, or to find out more, please contact Melissa on pagetwo@hotmail.co.uk or 07712 164310.

Milford Cards & Gifts announced as Finalist in the RETAS Awards

Kayleigh & Sinan at Milford Cards & Gifts have been announced as a Finalist in the RETAS Greeting Card Retail Awards. They have been recognised for their excellent response to the recent appeal for donations for the Earthquake Disaster in Turkey.

At one stage, the donations got so high that they had to pause receiving donations of items, as the charity they were working with (Luton Turkish Community Association) were inundated with generously donated items nationwide.

The final will be held in London in July, and we hope that they come back clutching a winners award.

Mark at The Village News also collected cash donations for the Turkey and Syria Earthquake appeal,
which went directly to the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) through his Payzone system.

It was heart-warming to see how these village retailers did all they could to help a devastated community in desperate need.
