In 2022 the BSL Act was passed, meaning that British Sign Language has now been recognised as a language of England, Wales and Scotland in its own right. This is a wonderful success for the deaf community.

Nancy works closely with Deaf Professionals and together they have created this Deaf Awareness Course, which is designed to introduce some useful communication tactics to you as an individual, or your group.

If this is something that you believe your team, or your organisation will benefit from and enjoy, now is your chance to learn something new that will really make a difference.

Rose is a big supporter of British Sign Language. She has been deaf since birth and uses BSL herself to communicate with the world.

She & Giovanni became Strictly Come Dancing Champions in 2021, during which they performed 'Silent Symphony', without doubt, the best ever dance on this long-running and much loved show.

Your Editor is supporting YoungMinds

You may not be aware, but in the business world, and away from writing Milford on Sea News, I have a company with a great team at Sourcing City.

Our team are doing a 310k Step Challenge in support of YoungMinds, a charity which aims to support troubled teenagers as they make their way through difficult times in life.

We are doing this in memory of Flo, who was was a lovely, vibrant, talented and well-loved young member of our team, and who was tragically lost to many who loved her earlier this year.

The link to Milford on Sea is tenuous. However, we have a home here, I have this platform, and I also know how generous people in Milford on Sea are when they can be! So, it would be remiss not to take this opportunity to get more support for lots of vulnerable kids if I can.

Below, is a press release we have recently published to our industry, and it may be something you might like to support if you can.

Sourcing City supporting YoungMinds and more

The team at Sourcing City have decided to support a number of charities that may be less in the limelight, but no less deserving, for the critical work they do.

YoungMinds is particularly in our thoughts at the moment, as they support, and save, troubled teenagers as they make their way through difficult times in life.

The Sourcing City team have formed a team for the YoungMinds ‘Out in the Open’ 310k Step Challenge in May.

During our lunch breaks, and after work, we will be collectively smashing that goal. We are doing this in memory of Flo, a lovely, vibrant, talented and well-loved young member of our team, who was tragically lost to many who loved her earlier this year.

We have already hit our £500 target, but we are sure that the YoungMinds charity would benefit greatly from any more that we can raise.

If anyone would like to support us, or just keep an eye on our progress, please visit: www.justgiving.com/team/sourcingcity

--------------------

Each month throughout the year the Sourcing City team donate £250 to each of three chosen charities. This month YoungMinds, the North Guildford Food Bank and Depher have all been selected.

Every month the team will consider if we want to change any of the charities we support, and any charity close to any of us will be added.

About Friends of NCF

In 2007 the founders of Friends of NCF, Steve and Liz Jennings went to Kampala. Whilst there they met some inspirational local Ugandans who had begun a small mission teaching slum children and supporting their families. They returned home determined to help the children and families living in the slum community in Namuwongo and ‘Friends’ was born.

Support started with the sponsorship of children in secondary education and then developed into fundraising for a school building. As the project continued to grow, ‘Friends’ began to finance a feeding programme to help the undernourished children receive a meal during their school day.

Friends of NCF also provide a free newsletter for moral or financial supporters, and welcome anyone wishing to do a fundraising event or challenge. To find out more please contact Matthew at: office@friendsofncf.org

Jack from The Garage runs London Marathon

Jack Andrews, village business owner at The Garage in Milford on Sea high street, has run the London Marathon raising donations for the British Heart Foundation.

Jack chose to run on behalf of the British Heart Foundation because his son, Oscar, just before he was 6 months old, had to have emergency heart surgery in 2021. This was due to a congenital heart condition, which will require ongoing support.

Any parent will appreciate how traumatic that this will have been for the family, and by all accounts Oscar have been strong & brave throughout.

Jack said: "When Oscar was in hospital and we sat by his bed feeling useless. We were able to look up his condition on the British Heart Foundation website and it really helped us to understand more about the situation we found our family in. Going forward, I am passionate about the British Heart Foundation's funding for research, development and support to children’s heart conditions and surgery. They really do fabulous work to save lives and support families."

Jack also commented on his race; "I found the start of London Marathon very emotional. This brought back a lot of feelings of what Oscar went the during his 6 week stay in PiCu following emergency life saving open heart surgery. I was running 26.2 miles for my son Oscar and to raise sponsorship for the BHF.

I very much enjoyed the first half, I was able to see my wife Emma, my son Oscar and my in-laws on tower bridge I stopped briefly to give Oscar a hug. From twenty miles I felt drained and it becomes a mental fight to push the last part.

The end is huge so much energy from all spectators, I saw my Mum, Emma and Oscar just before the finish this gave me strength to finish smiling."

Jack has a Just Giving Page for anyone who would like to sponsor, or see how much he has raised now, please click here.

---------------------------------------------

Jack owns The Garage in Milford on Sea high street, where he also carries out the role as a vehicle technician & MOT tester.

Wings ‘Wildlife Vision’ Presentation on Saturday

Wings will hold their second ‘Wildlife Vision’ Presentation and first AGM on Saturday 29th April in the Community Centre, Sea Road starting at 10.30am (doors open at 10.15am)

Arrive in time to view the various Wings displays. A short RSPB film will be shown on a loop leading into the presentation which will be given by Keith Metcalf.

Keith told us; “The first short film shows the RSPB’s spectacular Bempton Cliffs nature reserve.  The film has no narrative, just light background music as the film welcomes in the dawn, unfolds daily bird life and then closes the day at dusk and darkness. It’s quite dramatic.”

An introduction into what Wings has been doing over the past twelve-months will follow and will look at what we can all still do to help local wildlife and enhance habitats as part of their wider Vision aspirations.

Greenshank and Redshank
on the ‘scrape’ at
Sturt Pond Nature Reserve
A second short RSPB film about our largest British wader, the diminishing Curlew will follow.  The AGM will take place at the end of the talk.

Everyone is welcome to stay for a chat and light refreshments.

There is no entry fee, although donations to cover expenses would of course be welcome.
